Seriously? It's one of the more awesome stories in recent memory. I think ti's completely fascinating and a treasure trove of comedy gold.
Waiting for TheHugeManti parody poster any day now.
From the comedy aspect I agree. But it's being treated like some sort of national tragedy. I understand the media blows ND 24/7 so it's going to be bad, but when I got home from the game last night hoping to see highlights on SC, it was 15-20 straight minutes of Teo. LBJ scored his 20k point last night and that was a blip too.

“Route 1, where everybody meets.” ~Nick Faust #5
Of course he was in on it. Te'o reportedly met this person face to face November 28, 2009. According to Brian T'eo, Manti would meet with her in Hawaii. That was in 2010-2011. If he was being duped, T'eo is the dumbest person in the history of the world. Even an idiot can see that the person he was meeting with isn't the same person from the pictures. This is a lie that T'eo perpetrated that grew over the years until it overwhelmed him. By far and away the best thing for him would be to totally come clean and move forward. America loves when someone redeems themselves.
See, this is plausible, except some of the details don't make sense for this. While the relationship was going on, according to the press conferences last night "They set up meetings several times, including in Hawaii, where she no-showed". That's not normal. To never visit her grave, and never have contact with her family after she died? That's not normal.
I don't know what you mean, but it had the cadence of a joke.
Yeah if he was catfished and didn't learn about it until the last month or two, then he is extremely gullible. He never skyped or facetimed with this girl when that technology is so superfluous that even my elderly relatives do it. The love of your life, your girlfriend, just died. Maybe you can't visit her during the season, I get that. But you don't try to send flowers or some kind of condolence to her family, talk to her family, read her obituary, etc.? If he did try all of that and it wasn't working, how did it take him until December (when he supposedly informed Notre Dame about it) to put it together that it was a hoax?
I think he may have been duped initially but he learned it was a hoax at some point early on but kept the lie going because he was embarrassed. There is no way he is dumb/gullible enough to not figure this out until well after the fact. That would just be so unbelievably dumb, especially for a guy who is supposedly intelligent.

Im sure this is already posted somewhere, BUTTTTTTTTT just in case (SIAP)
EVERYBODY is talking this. I wonder if putting up a profile on an online dating site with something like "my prior girlfriend got leiukemia and died and then I found out she was fake" (but with more craft and detail) would clean up or get you KILLED
"Maryland football: Where everybody gets hurt and the starting left tackle has an existential crisis."
I completely agree with neal on this. He figured it out but was too embarassed and then went with it and grew the lies. Something like this happened to one of my friends, so it's completely possible, but I think that he figured it out and then just couldn't let it go and help make it ridiculous.
This is just one example of many why you should go play football in the SEC, not Notre Dame. You wouldn't care about girls on Twitter if you went to Bama or some other SEC school full of hotties.

Wait. Wait. Hold on. Ok start over.
If there is a God in heaven it will air tonight at 8:00.
How did he find out she died to begin with? Did someone create a twitter account, say it's her brother and tweet him that she died? And he just accepted that and moved on?
In the story he told, he said that he had conversations her and her family while she was on the phone and heard from them to find out she died. If none of them existed, how did he find out about her death?
I just don't understand how he didn't figure out when he set up times to meet with her and she just didn't show up.
It's like on Catfish where the people that are getting duped just believe what they want to believe. There's always some excuse for why they can't meet or why they can't skype. You would think at some point you would see through it, but I think on some level they don't want to see through it.
Yeah, the strange thing in all this is why he would be so desperate as to follow around a phantom for 3 years.
Say what you want about ND v. the SEC, and I get that, but there had to be plenty of ass available for a star football player at ND where he would not be having a 3 year online relationship with someone he never once saw.
There's gotta be something more to this. He's not some 65 year old widow holding out for that one last shot at true love.
Stephen A Smith (I know, I know), just roasted Manti on Sportscenter. (paraphrasing) "She was in an accident and you didn't visit...she was diagnosed with cancer and you didn't visit...she had a funeral and you didn't go...you said you sent white roses, let's see the receipt...you said the casket was closed at 9AM, how would you know that if you didn't go?"
I haven't read through this entire thread, so maybe it has been discussed, but has anyone thrown out the "maybe he's gay" theory?
LOL yes that was thrown out pretty early on.
This. And he didn't go to the funeral because she didn't want him to. What about flowers, a card, etc? He continued to reference her in December even after he apparently "found out" she was fake. Maybe I'm just being overly pessimistic but I think the simplest answer is he was in on it. I think it actually requires a much more significant suspension of disbelief to think he wasn't.

He's obviously a homosexual.
