Didn't steven A used to be a writer for or nba insider? Espn type casted him into the role that skip bayless has already been, blowhard/fake debator. I'm guessing he knows this but gets paid big money so doesn't care?

Damn, keen insight. Thread worthy.
If I'm doing housework or something like that, I often turn the TV to whatever sports crap is on and just leave it on as background noise. I can't do that with First Take. I honestly don't understand how anyone watches that show. Mind-numbing stupidity.
People love to hate. Same reason limbaugh and oreilly are on the air.
Limbaugh and O'Reilly are obnoxious, but they're smart. They also get really high ratings. I don't think either of those points is true with respect to First Take and its hosts.
First take gets awesome ratings. Why do you think it's gone the way it has?
In 2011, First Take had the highest non-event ratings on ESPN.

I stand corrected. That's baffling to me.
If you think about the American people for 15 seconds, it will become less baffling.
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
show has been awesome since ashanti became host.
I'm pretty sure it rates really high with African Americans and I'm sure huge white racists love it too. Also it's the kind of show that people put on in workplaces.
I see it on in public waiting areas a lot (car mechanic, doctor/dentist office, etc), so I wonder how much is that versus how much is people actually watching and paying attention to the show.
That's how I'll rationalize it, at least, for fear of losing the residual faith I happened to have remaining in humanity.
In the grand scheme of things it's a very small percentage but it helps a little.
My school has TVs in the cafeteria and they sometimes play FirstTake on it. Which makes no sense because you can't even hear what they say, but I guess it's for the better.
Balls to the wall
My thinking is that it's a TV show that caters to the West Coast audience, particularly LA.
People in LA are largely unbelievably vapid. And they're more interested in the drama surrounding sports than the actual sports stories. Hence their morning version of SportsCenter is largely vapid, devoid of highlights, and focused on the human interest side of sports stories rather than the games themselves.
It's annoying but it's probably one of the reasons that it's better to be living on the East coast than in LA.
I think First Take caters to the 'Jerry Springer/House Wives Of .............../ Love and Hip Hop' audience who like to watch staged outrage and people making fools out of themselves. First Take used to be a show that would focus more on interviews and interesting stories of athletes and the "debates" were secondary, all of a sudden it became a platform for Skip and Stephen A.Smith to act like idiots and appeal to the lowest common denominator.
First Take has become like those trashy shows I mentioned at the beginning because even if you don't watch it, you'll hear about what happens on the show(Skip lying about his high school basketball career, RGIII being called a Cornball Brother, Terrell Suggs and Skip looking like they want to fight each other, etc.) because the foolishness gets attention from multiple outlets.
America is dumb.
If you think Skip Bayless is any less aware of what he's doing than Limbaugh idk what to tell you. Yeah, dude probably has a lot of opinions that really are that stupid but the majority of the time he's intentionally trolling for attention/ratings (which he gets).
:colfax agenda alert
Seriously though, this is pretty ridiculous. LA has a ton of fairweather fans, for sure, but they're probably even less into sports drama than most east coasters. People in general in LA are less into sports than they are here, drama or otherwise. SportsCenter in general is the same in the mornings on the east coast. It has nothing to do with people of LA being vapid relative to the general population.
There's an element of that, sure, but I don't think it's to the extent that you say it is. Smart trolls can still come up with reasonably cogent arguments to support their trolling points. Bayless often makes some of the worst arguments I've ever heard. I don't mean that his premise is bad - that part is often trolling. But his "support" for his main points is often just asinine.
Also, I'd argue that Limbaugh and O'Reilly are about 7 planes of success above Bayless, but that's due to more than just intelligence.
