Conference affiliation doesn't hurt your academics. It may not provide the same benefits as the Big Ten does, but UNC won't become a worse school because they join the SEC.
That is not what's going through the heads of the academics who make these decisions.
If you have two choices and they are at least comparable in terms of athletics, then the academic side will win out. That's all there is to it.
I wouldn't be surprised by almost anything in this realignment roulette, but I would be stunned if UNC ends up in the SEC. Not with the Big 10 surely knocking, their high academic prestige, and their current historically big academic scandal.
The Big 12 is the biggest pressing threat to the conference. But the others are big, big threats as well.
It becomes almost like a big game theory scenario if you have all these schools depending on each other to hold off simultaneous intrusions from the Big 10 and SEC, both of which are probably happening right now. And I hate all that game theory nonsense, but I'm pretty sure that Dr. Nash would not be betting on the ACC making it through this right now.
your conference is kinda like the neighborhood you live in
if you move to a nice neighborhood where people spend time/money on the lawn and gardens and stuff like that, you will feel the pressure to do the same, you will get your shit looking nice and then you will also shop at whole foods and eat arugula...
if you move to a nubs neighborhood where people park their pickups in the front yard and have worn out fences and weeds everywhere, pretty soon that will rub off on you and then you start wearing jorts everyday on your way to Golden Corral and...
I don't think the ACC is going to make it through this, just that nothing will happen again until the B12 makes their move.
I don't get why ECU is joining the BE only for football
The problem is the ACC only thought they lived in a nice neighborhood-they didnt.
The ACC is akin to the snooty professor at a local university who looks down his nose at the plumber, only to find out that the plumber makes a hell of a lot more money than he does.
Not even counting tier 3 rights-and the one conference football game and 4 conference basketball games reserved to the big 12 schools, the big 12 makes a lot more money than the ACC. With bowl line ups 10 million more.
throw in playoff distribution and tier 3+, plus whatever Fox kicks in for a ccg and some east coast exposure, and you are talking major differences in revenue.
I think one reason the big 12 is loathe to expand is 8 members are getting full shares right now, while tcu/wvu together only get a share.
If the big 12 expands with fsu, fsu will have to be made full members from day 1, and that would mean bumping wvu and tcu up to full members 3 years early. That is real money. So it is actually in the big 12's financial interest not to act quickly-as long as they dont drag it out too long.
They could use the 20 plus million a year they save on wvu-tcu not getting a full share to pay fsu's exit fee.

P12 one is kind of an invalid comparison since its held on Stanford's campus so the demand will be higher with no travel costs to factor in.
GT Rivals rumor that the ACC's selection to replace Maryland will be Louisville.

Louisville is unbelievably bad academically. Surprised by this but not shocked. ACC is really becoming a weaker conference by the day. Minus Notre Dame and with the MD defection, the ACC is now a weaker academic conference according to US News rankings than the Big 10.
Really goes to show how much of an error it was to not just take WVU.
Academics is becoming a non-issue in conference realignment. However, once the conferences are settled and the schools with lower academics like L-ville start kicking the tails of the more prestigious schools, then academic requirements may a real issue. As someone pointed out earlier, your conference is your hood...FSU's academics has improved since it joined the ACC. NC State and clemson are much better schools than they were when I was in school. Maybe that is what they envision for L'ville.
For a school like WVU, would it have altered its academic requirements for athletes to be in the ACC? For all we know, that could be higher than the standards for the general population of WVU students. would Louisville?

No big surprise here.
From Yahoo! Sports: GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- The Atlantic Coast Conference has filed a lawsuit against Maryland seeking full payment of the approximately $53 million exit fee for the school's move to the Big Ten.
Cincinnati trying to make its case for the ACC
Cincinnati is making a strong push to gain admittance to the ACC with a campaign about why the school is a more viable option than fellow Big East members Connecticut and Louisville, a source with knowledge told ESPN.
Please say you are kidding? You are in a conference with UNC-who has athletes that cant read or write-and you want to take shots at WVU who has flunked out 5 star athletes, and 2 4 star athletes last year who were the highest rated kids in its class?
Miami-google Andre Johnson. he was caught cheating and the student honor board kicked him out, but the Univ. president intervened and overruled them and suspended him for the summer session(like he was going to be taking classes in the summer).
And didnt Bowden just forfeit about 3 years worth of wins bc FSU cheated to keep athletes eligible who should have been playing for Marshall and East Carolina?
WVU actually has very high student athlete standards. John beilein said he'd never recruit a player who he'd hesitate to invite over for sunday dinner with his family or he did not believe was a true student athlete. And several of Belein's recruits were in fact academic all americans. Do a little research before making dumb statements.

File some discovery for requests for admission, then summary judgment.
Slam dunk for terps.
It wont be nearly so easy for the fools who voted for the increase.

I'm not sure I agree with that. The ACC didn't need another middle level program, they needed a football heavyweight like Notre Dame or Penn State.
WVU would've helped but given how everything else went the past 5-10 years I still think the ACC would've been the weakest conference of the Big 5 today.

UVA and UNC should just move to the SEC. The SEC wouldn't treat them like second class citizens. It unifies the confederate states. And creates a great Kentucky UNC rivalry, with Florida being a huge third team. UVA probably thinks that it has a shot in basketball and would get all Virginia football recruits over tech.
That makes the SEC the biggest athletic conference and everyone profits.

The minimum standards to get into WVU are a 2.0 GPA and a (two section) SAT score of 910. The minimum NCAA requirements are a 2.0 and a SAT score of 1010. So yes, the requirements for athletes are higher than they are for the general student body at WVU.
Reportedly, the last vote taken had Louisville with the lead, but was one vote short to make the move official.
A Jersey Guy talks about ACC commissioner Swofford attempting to form a consensus about what move to make after losing Maryland to the Big Ten last week.
Hmmm ... Interesting reports that B1G is sending feelers to N. Carolina, Virginia, Ga Tech, Notre Dame, Kansas and will take 2 of the 4.
