Hopefully it's just a bad bruise.
Nicklas Backstrom, who didn’t finish yesterday’s game after taking a slap shot off his arm, is taking part in practice. #Caps
This is a tough part of the year. We're playing great hockey at the right time but we need to stay lucky with injuries right now.
We wouldn't have tie tiebreaker on Winnepeg, right? First tiebreaker is Regulation/Overtime wins, and we currently both have 21 ROW, with the Caps having 2 more points.
So, if Winnepeg gains 2 points on us in the final 4 games, AND does not gain those 2 points through a shootout win, they would hold the tiebreak. If they do gain those points through a shootout win, we'd be tied in ROW and then head to head tiebreaker would come into play. This could end up being significant.
If the point totals and ROWs are even, we're almost certain to win the tiebreaker.
The head to head tiebreaker is based on total points gained in games between the teams, but it's weird because of the unbalanced sked this year. Because the teams have played an odd number of games against each other, the result of the first home game played at the team who got an extra head-to-head game at home gets thrown out.
We've already played the three we'll play in Winnipeg, and after Tuesday there will have been two played in DC. So for tiebreaker purposes, the result of the first game we played in Winnipeg this year gets thrown out.
Which sucks, because we won it. We won all the games we played in the Peg this year in regulation - their only win (also in regulation) was the one here. In order to get to the next tiebreak, Winnipeg has to beat us in regulation on Tuesday. An OT or shootout win won't be enough - the loser point we get will win us the tiebreak.
The next tiebreak is goal differential. We're at +13 right now, and Winnipeg is at -12. If we're so bad that that goal difference gets made up, the tiebreak isn't going to matter because Winnipeg will have blown past us.
In short, win on Tuesday. That's what I'd do.
Thanks. My point was also that Winnepeg could outright win the ROW tiebreaker, and it would never come to a 2nd or 3rd tiebreaker.
For example, currently, Caps and Jets both 21 ROW. Caps 50 points. Jets 48.
Jets finish with 6 points in final 4 games. Caps finish with 4 points. By gaining the 2 points, they also gain 1 ROW (which will happen unless one of the wins is a shootout win). Thus, teams finish tied at 54 points, Jets win tiebreaker.
So a shoout win tomorrow is essentially a loss if the Jets win, too. Normally you'd be happy to kick the can down the road and be up 2 points with 3 left. Not in that case. Then all they have to do is win Tuesday and they're in control. Thankfully they're finally playing a legitimate team
hehehe, that's so true about their media.
Caps were in Long Island, and I had been sent up there for some work, I'd found a good game up there while I was there and go the Caps/Isles game with some of these guys. They went to the hotel bar next to the Nassau coliseum after the game, and a bunch of the Caps are in there. I run into Al Iafrate, who had just been traded here, and I ask him what was Toronto like, and he just shook his head and said, "Awww, FUCK, I hated it! I'm so glad to be outta there". lol.
No. Our magic number is 7 points earned or lost by the Jets so getting 1 point tonight would mean winning any three games left or 1 plus a regulation win over Winnipeg to clinch. 1 point tonight is huge.
Other key games:
Isles @ Winnipeg
Toronto @ Ottawa
Ok Longbeach, Caps could use some help this afternoon.
it's almost a mortal lock that WPG wins in OT, right?
Can the Isles hold on...less than 2 to go
F@ck both these teams

Jackie Robinson isn't dirty. This isn't Pack Pride.
Lol 3 point game... Fuck us right
well it's 4-4 now...
im hearing pg plaza is the spot!
Fuck the Isles
An Isles shootout win is still a positive for us. It means a win tonight and we can clinch the division on Tuesday.
LUBOMIR VISNOVSKY IS A GOD
That was a fucking nutso OT
going to the shootout, at least that's good for tiebreaker purposes
Basically a regulation win vs Winnipeg and any other win gives us the Southeast. It pretty much comes down to Tuesday.
Win tonight and we are in decent shape with the final 3 at home.
Win tonight and Tuesday will be awesome.
