Here comes the RIbeiro extension.
Just checking to make sure you hadn't off'd yourself, you know how you can get sometimes, eh. hehehe.
I'm absolutely pissed I'm not going tomorrow night. I will be at next week's game, however.
I had little faith in GMGM to deal him when we were way out of contention, I have no faith at all that he'd do it with the team a few points out of the playoffs.
An unrestricted free agent in July, the 33-year-old center wants stability for his family beyond just his hockey career. Will Washington trade him before the deadline?
Should end well!
Let's see....don't trade him, feel pressured to resign him since you got nothing for him, watch his market value be way too pricey......sign him anyway!!!
or let him walk at end of the season (after he asks for way too much) - and get nothing for him...like Wideman, etc...
I'm pretty much resigned that we make the playoffs now (funny to say that)...with everyone back we should
From Boz chat today.
Capitals - Mike Ribeiro
Tom, should the Capitals sign Mike Ribeiro to a long term contract? Thanks, John

Thomas Boswell :
This is a tough one. I've been mulling it, chatting with Katie Carrera about it at a game recently. I'd lean toward "Yes." The Caps can't afford "rebuilding years" right now while the Ovechkin-Backstrom window is still (theoretically) open. How can you let a veteran like Ribeiro, who's produced and fit in well with the team, gets away and just assume "oh, we'll find a way to replace him AND add enough additional talent to get back to being a playoff team NEXT season."
You can't make moves that diminish your chances the next two seasons while Ovechkin, Backstrom, Laich could still adapt to Oates new system and make a jump up next season. You have to keep the window open as long as possible and let this group play out its fate. (It's not like you are likely to find a trade partner for Ovechkin. So, what's your alternative?)
Sometimes, you have to reason backwards. The Caps need to find out if they have a first-rate coach in Oates, who is extremely hockey-smart and detailed in his approach. He's not an easy coach "pick up quickly" in a lockout-shortened season with almost no preparation. You just HAVE to give him a fair chance. What, get ANOTHER coach? Well, if you keep Oates, then you keep GMGM who hired him, believes in him, etc. To give '13-'14 that "fair chance" to measure the Oates system, you need to let him work with the same best players he had this year __plus net additions through less injuries. That means keep Ribeiro.
(This seems so logical. Which probably means it's wrong. The OTHER argument is that 1) the window has already closed. 2) GMGM needs to go. 3) By the time you're good again Ribeiro will be too old to be worth his congtract. But I doubt many Caps fans want to throw in the towell on this era yet.)
Why is Boz talking Caps? Has he even seen a Caps game this year?
So do people really think we can win with this current set of players? I don't play for a 2nd round exit, I play to win a cup.
This current crew will not be able to get it done. Extending Ribeiro only prolongs this cluster.
I disagree that there is a "window" for OV/Backstrom. They will be here long-term. If you trade Ribeiro for a 1st rounder + a prospect, blow the rest of the year (likely), then next year you have 2 first rounders in a good draft... Forsberg likely joining, then Kuz the year after. You could even trade Ribeiro then try to get him back in the offseason if you care that much (he won't be worth his contract.. SH % is crazy high lucky this year).
For those that have done so, how close to faceoff can you buy tix on Stubhub? In-laws are in town next week and I am planning on taking my FIL to the Isles game on 4/4 (after the Nats at 4:00 for a doubleheader). Unfortunately, the turnaround this week may prevent ticket prices from plummeting as much as I expected but I know I can still get something well under face.
Tickets for tomorrow night are relatively scarce and expensive on SH, if they keep winning don't expect much change, regardless of opponent.
You can get in for $25. That's not bad at all.

Big signing for Canes: Semin 5-year, $35 million extension
good luck, carolina
@twolinepass not like they need to re-sign mcbain, tlusty, and faulk in summer 2015 either. OH WAIT THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED TO DO WELP
@twolinepass. the hurricanes have 38.025m committed to six players through 2015-16. hahaha good lord.
@twolinepass they have $6.1m to sign six guys, including a no.2/3 D. do they even want to make the playoffs? they can't, right?
@twolinepass the hurricanes have more committed against the cap for next year with 17 guys locked up than this year with 25. i dont get it
@twolinepass eric staal 8.25, alex semin 7, cam ward 6.3, jordan staal 6, jeff skinner 5.725, tuomo ruutu 4.75. all through 2015-16 at least.
@twolinepass someone take away jimmy rutherford's keys. he's in no condition to operate an nhl team.
Thank god we're keeping these fucks in our division
I'm sure his effort will be fantastic for the next 5 years now that he got his long term deal.

Bad play from Laich too, but yes that was a horrible turnover from GreenLife.
Glad to see someone acknowledge the play by Laich - wtf was he thinking. First he seemed to be skating half-speed (re-injured?). Then sends it all the way back behind the net - and at an angle so it doesn't clear but deflects off the back side of the goal...at the time I just saw the 1 on the jersey - and assumed it was Olesky making a rookie mistake. When I saw it was 21 really couldn't believe he made that play.
not all on 52 IMO...and Laich did acknowledge (from the Yahoo recap)
Green was not made available afterward and Laich took responsibility for the play.
''I got caught out, a little fatigued, went back and I wanted to send it back behind the net,'' Laich said. ''I didn't think I could get Mike direct. I didn't want to turn one over in the middle in front of our net so I sent it behind the net. Bad angle, bad decision by myself. I put Mike in trouble and it resulted in the winning goal.''

Yea, definitely not all on Green, no doubt. That was a badly bouncing puck coming off the boards to Green, not always an easy play to make with their fastest player bearing down.
Instead of throwing the puck back like he did, Laich could have just turned hard to his left along the right boards, held the puck and he'd been 100% OK as the forechecker would have gone past him, or he could have passed it on the ice w/puck hugging the boards the whole way back to Green on the other side of the net to break out. You just know Laich would love to have that one back.
