Conference Realignment Thread (Hopkins Seeks Conference)

  • Every once and awhile, WVU does take recruits from MD, UVa, and VT. With them playing in the Big 12, that will happen even less frequent as they will not be competing against their friends, hard for their family to travel to away games, etc..

  • Pitino is still waving the Big East banner, I don't think he is aware he is going to the Big12:

Rick Pitino stole the show Wednesday at Big East media day. He said he used a poor choice of words when he said if UConn left for the ACC it would be the "dumbest" thing he ever heard. "My word 'dumb' is inappropriate, 'not intelligent' would have been a better way of expressing it." ... "The ACC had five teams last year in the NCAAs. They saw us get 11. They probably realized, 'We're not going to be the SEC [in football].' For years the premier conference in basketball was the ACC. I'm sure they want to get back to that and what better way than steal two premier basketball programs. Smart move. They don't like the fact that Big East has been the premier basketball conference."

Slick Rick has spent just about his entire career between Boston, NYC and Kentucky. I can see why he's elected to go down with the Big East ship. I don't know if he ever envisioned himself having to recruit to the Big12.

He also said that conference affiliation should be made at the AD level. He's not quite clueless, but definitely myopic.

Kansas can recruit nationally into the Big 12, why couldn't Pitino and Huggy?

I didn't mean to imply that he can't, but I don't think it's in his comfort zone either.

  • I'm slightly concerned that if the Big East-hybrid dies, Notre Dame might ultimately join the Big Ten over the ACC due to them having fewer members (Big Ten would expand to 14, ACC would expand to 16 with ND). In that event, we steal a page from the Joker and have BC and Wake fight to the death to stay in the conference.

16 with the rotating pods to make up the two divisions is probably a more workable solution than 14 team.

It would come down to how much they value playing Michigan St. And Purdue vs their need for east coast ties.

    Hater MISS

By now you are drinking the ice cold refreshment of reality that is your pending membership to the Big 12 Conference. Before you take this epic journey into the epicenter of the Lone Star State, I would like to pass down my knowledge of the conference as a whole. Hopefully my vast experience rooting for a team from these parts, will help you adjust by taking over our old role and thus learning from our past mistakes. (Or sloppy seconds, however you want to look at it.) Here are some tips and guidelines to help you better adjust to your new future home.

    1) Do what Texas says. Think of them as the mafia who has paid off the judges and government officials. If you complain about their conduct, you will simply be taking your case to a member of their payroll. You are now their *****. Get used to it.

    2) I hope you aren’t used to your games being on television. Thanks to the Big 12 TV contract, you and your friends can gather to watch several of your games on the fantastic medium of PAY PER VIEW!! This new and exciting way of watching the game is far better than “nothing”, which is what we got last week for our 100th Homecoming game.

    3) Don’t assume any sort of bowl invitation. Just because you go 11-2 and beat your next closest rival, does not mean in the slightest that you will be given priority…even if you won head to head on a neutral field. If you finish 2nd in the league, or just go 6-6, you have absolutely no idea where you will end up, if you end up anywhere at all. Good luck, because most of the bowl officials making these decisions are either criminals or admit that they don’t even watch the games.

    4) Oklahoma does not make the rules and take all the money like Texas, but they are WAY better than them on the field. If you play them, prepare to get rolled. (And be pleasantly surprised if you beat them once every 15 years.)

    5) Kansas sucks at everything but basketball. They actually suck at that too, but have convinced the world otherwise.

    6) It’s OK to feel bad for Iowa State or Kansas State. They have nowhere else to go and will do anything to stay in the good graces of the alpha male. (ie – Texas). Think Bif and his friends in the movie Back to the Future. They are the ones with the sunglasses and no lines.

    7) Yes, that is Iowa State’s actual stadium and yes, the wind is blowing 60mph

    8) Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are similar teams that are also tag-alongs to their buddies UT and OU. They play in bandbox stadiums in the middle of nowhwere, and their fans are backwoods, tabacco chewing yokels who love nothing more than to head out to the stadium on Saturday night and spit on whatever poor team comes to town that week. You should feel right at home with them.

    9) You will soon begin to HATE Dr. Pepper and Phillips 66. There’s also this place called Whataburger that…ah nevermind.

    10) Don’t even ask how Baylor got into this conference.

LOL, good summary of the Big XII from Missouri's board to West Virginia fans.

    Yawn.

This isn't ND's fault. They aren't obligated to join the Big East for fb.

It's a soapbox that will get some people riled up though, so at least Geno has that going for him.

I've been thinking today about how things would look if ND had become a full fledged member of the BE. We'd be probably laughing at the demise of the ACC (lol Wake) from our perch in either the BE or the B10.

  • Mizzou board is giving the prez the authority to move to the SEC, essentially.

Seems to have made a move to set up a non-conference game against Kansas in Kansas City in future years, if Missouri does indeed go to the SEC.

Also, since the Big XII basketball tournament would be less likely to be held in K.C., Mizzou (if it goes to the SEC) would set up an invitational in-season tourney in K.C.

So it looks like they've just given Deaton carte blanche to make the move, but the ball is still in his court to officially do it.

When it's official, I wonder if they will push to leave this year.

A yearly fb game would be a good replacement for the Big12 CG, especially since the game wasn't in MO every year anyway.

I'm not sure if KU bb would do the game though. Plus, it wouldn't nearly be the same as having a 4 round tourney every 2-3 years with a bunch of out-of-towners in hotel rooms.

Either way, even though KC-STL are missing out on postseason events, it shouldn't be something that should hold up the SEC process because KU is not obligated to acquiesce.

Does BYU becomes more attractive to Big 12? They'd be able to fill gaping schedule holes. (LVille and WVU 27-month wait).

Oh, one more. Deaton says that they would be in a new league next year. That contrasts with Neinas' notion that they'd be in B12 in 2012.

    ______________

First point: either BYU fits or it doesn't. They shouldn't let the fact that they'll have to wait for WV/UL make a difference with BYU.

Second: I think most people expected them to roll out immediately. We'll have to see the Big12's response.

I think he means the B12 grabs BYU first to make it a 10 team league next year and then WVU/L'ville together to make it a 12 team league after the 27 months.

Adding BYU ASAP allows them to never have a year with an uneven number of teams

Or maybe the Big XII sticks with BYU as the tenth member and leaves Louisville and WVU in the new BOD Big East. I guess there are four options at this point:

    1) WVU is stuck in the BOD Big East with BYU as the tenth and final Big XII member;
    2) WVU is the tenth and final Big XII member and exists as an outcast in the league as the only team east of the Mississippi;
    3) Louisville is the tenth and final Big XII member and WVU is left in an even crappier BOD Big East; or
    4) Big East FB dies with the Big XII going back to twelve teams, adding BYU, WVU, and Louisville.

I can't tell which I'd prefer. I guess whatever causes WVU the most pain, which would be Louisville as the tenth and final member of the Big XII.

  • BYU was reportedly rejected by the B12's TV partners a few weeks ago. Maybe going to 12 teams changes that but that was reportedly why TCU got in when A&M left and not BYU.

My question is if the B12 isn't going to take BYU where would they turn for team number 12?

They could always snipe Houston or SMU from the BOD BE, but I think the Texas schools would prefer to keep out any more Texas schools for recruiting purposes so who knows.

I think that's why they keep the BYU option open despite the disagreement over the play on Sunday debate with the TV partners.

  • I read something a couple days ago saying that if Missouri left, the Big 12 was more likely to go back to 12 teams because they'd need to make up the markets they would have lost by losing St. Louis and the surrounding region. Because adding BYU doesn't get you any big markets, and while West Virginia and Louisville don't either, it at least gets you some.
