Conference Realignment Thread (The Dude is back!)

Look for the C7 to add Xavier, Butler and Creighton for next year and go to 12 for 2014-15. Still in flux, but trending that way.

Sounds like the C7 can't decide on who of Saint Louis, Dayton, and Richmond is going to draw the short straw.

  • Least surprising news ever...

BREAKING: Notre Dame hoops to the ACC for next year. Announcement coming tomorrow. @SInow http://college-basketball.si.com/2013/03/11/notre-dame-set-to-jump-to-acc-next-year/ …

  • Does the ACC kick Maryland out of the ACC tournament next year? I know a lot of the mid-majors kicked teams out of the conference tournaments in their last season but I think the ACC would catch a lot more flak for leaving MD out.

In those cases it was already in the bylaws.

  • Not directly on topic, but I have a ton of friends that are Pitt fans that are going to MSG for the last real Big East tournament this year and I still have not gotten bored with saying "Don't worry, you'll get to make trips to Greensboro every March from here on out!"

  • Duke athletic director Kevin White said Monday the ACC will likely continue to keep the tournament in Greensboro, N.C. But White said the ACC should look to New York -- Madison Square Garden or Brooklyn -- at some point in a rotation of tournament sites. White said a decision should be reached in the next three to four months as to whether the ACC would pursue a New York turn in the rotation. The ACC is in Greensboro through 2015. Greensboro, Charlotte, Tampa, Washington D.C. and Atlanta all submitted bids for hosting the ACC tournament between 2016-21. But that doesn’t mean New York can’t be back in play. White said the ACC has to consider the new and old assets in the league. Regardless, he said the (eventual 15-team) ACC tournament will be the best basketball in the country.

  • They'll do it in New York one year, the fans of certain schools will complain to high heavens, and it'll never be done again.

    neal990

  • I'm assuming all 15 schools will make the ACCT next year and they won't be like the A10, where only the top 12 make it.

They just don't roll out the red carpet in New York. I mean, in Greensboro, time stops for the ACC toon-a-ment.

  • How would it work in NYC with the BE tournament still being held there every year? Isn't there some other conference that is doing there tournament in Brooklyn already as well? Is it the A-10?

Obviously the ACC is going to be a great, great draw and it's unbelievably provincial that they're holding the tournament in Greensboro every year. It should still probably be in DC every single year with the long-term view of building an identity there like the BE has with NYC. Certainly smarter than holding it in NC.

    alexterp

  • I would think MSG is not as beholden to the nuBE as it was to the old BE. I could be wrong but I'd think they'd prefer something like the nuBE being in there every other year so that they can rotate in the ACC and B10.

Without Syracuse, Pitt, ND and UConn I don't think the BE tournament is quite the draw it once was.

Big East Tourney tips off today w/ 14 teams. W/ news of Notre Dame's divorce, 10 won't be in the league next year. Realignment, folks.

Kinda stupid to make DC their base if Maryland isn't in the conference anymore.

The ACC may think its base is in North Carolina, but with these new additions the conference has no real home anymore. The league office and tournament will be in NC, but adding more northern schools like Syracuse and Pitt (as well as ND, since any conference they're in they basically run) makes it a lot more difficult to exert control over the rest of the conference. But they're going to find running a 15-team conference to be completely impossible without the insane money the B1G and SEC are generating.

To be honest, I'll be surprised if the ACC has 15 teams in 2014-15.

  • I would hope the ACC quits its pissing match now and let's MD out this year for around $22mil and just go with a 14 team schedule next year. Not sure if the BIG would be ready for MD to join this season though. I know a 15 team bball schedule will be the suck next year, more so since Mr. BoJangles will F' us to the max next season. Things will certainly get interesting now. No way the ACC claim that MD harmed the conference holds water since Notre Dame sped up joining and Louisville "replaced" MD almost immediately.

Alyssa Thomas would be perhaps the first player in NCAA history to win Player of the Year in two different conferences.

Obviously, that's the biggest thing riding on a MD move to the B10 in 2013-2014.

Why would they want to have uneven divisions for a year?

There's an e-mail floating around as well from the JHU administration regarding their exploration.

I think it comes down to exposure for their lacrosse program, because they have that deal with ESPNU and all.
