Who cares? If the guy is gassed he is gassed. He has bigger fish to fry. His window for a US Open title is closing. He has to be ready to go at Olympic. I commend him for being honest. He could of made up some story about a phony injury like most other guys do.

agreed. Like I said, Phil is my favorite ... and when I heard he was withdrawing, I wasn't happy. Then I heard his excuse, I'm cool with it.

Olympic is the most important thing right now.

  • Tiger birdies three of his first six holes to tie for the lead. There were only 12 rounds under par in the morning. None of the other seven players within 2 strokes of the lead is any sort of threat either - Baddeley's probably the second biggest name in that group.

  • And Tiger missed a 6 footer for birdie on the second, wasting a great approach shot. Just pulled it. Otherwise, seems to be playing very well. Nice to see Fred doing well as well

    coterpfan

  • Only three early starters on the course under par so far today, could be an interesting round.

  • Just saw that. Is there a reason for such early tee times today? Weather?

  • I didn't know the Tour relaxed the rule about cellphones during competition rounds.

There was still a lot of buzz about Phil Mickelson's withdrawal after shooting a 79 in Thursday's first round. His playing partners, Watson and Rickie Fowler, both contended that part of the reason Mickelson pulled out was because of the continual distraction of fans clicking their cellphone cameras during Mickelson's swings.

The PGA Tour permits fans to bring cellphones onto the course, but they must be silent or on vibrate and can only be used to make or take calls in specified areas.

"We created an atmosphere for fans to use their phones and when we get these marquee groups together, that many people want to take photos," Tom Strong, in charge of tournament standards for the tour, said Friday. "We did have a setback with how it worked. We got together (Memorial Tournament executive director) Dan Sullivan, the marshal team and we beefed it up today."

Police said about 50 phones were confiscated from the Watson-Fowler group.

Marshals frequently cautioned the galleries following Tiger Woods to silence their phones and not take pictures. Security guards who walk the ropes with Woods also warned spectators who were poised to snap photos as Woods passed.

"We'll be more aggressive with taking phones away," Strong said.

After Thursday's opening round, Watson was clearly angry about the cellphone use.

"Ever since they made that rule that cellphones are allowed, it's just not fun playing," he said.

  • Levin is putting on a clinic right now.

    terp2007

  • Yeah I'm rooting for Levin big time. I always root for those type of guys.

As for Michelson I thinkg it's bullshit and disrespectful to Jack. Tiger caught major crap for pulling out when he had a minor injury. Michelson wasn't hurt, he bailed when he knew he had no shot at making the cut.

  • It will be interesting to watch Levin and Sabbatini when the pressure is on. A few years back, they were among the most likely tour players to lose their tempers on the course and Sabbatini seemed to be muttering to himself thtoughout yesterday's round. I'd like to see one of the young guys, Levin, Fowler or Ishikawa, pull out the win.

Recalling "hot heads" on the tour. I recall following Steve Pate for a few holes at a local tournament (Avenal or Kingsmill). Pate was a good player who won some tournaments and made the Ryder Cup team one year but he would sometimes lose it when things didn't go his way. The day we followed him, he began talking to himself early in the round after every shot. We didn't follow him for his entire round but he seemed very tightly wound.

Follow Pat Perez for a round if you want a few laughs

I followed Tommy Toles for a bit at the '97 Open at Congo and I couldn't believe he didn't get thrown off the course. On 13 (I think) he hit a ball in the bunker and did the Spalding Caddyshack routine and just walked in and started whacking away, took him three to get out. When he putted out he took a swing at the cup and almost gouged the green.

Remember Levin being a douche with the turned up collar and cigs at the US Am one year. He can really play, and he's had few chip ins this week to help too.

Have to guess Fowler will win today. Whoever takes most advantage of the par 5's will win. He can deal with playing with Tiger. Sabatini and Levin get a break playing behind the group, all the crowd movement should be in front of them.

  • What has been the deal with Rory lately, missing 3 straight cuts and it seems to follow the same script, ok 1st round and just falls apart in round 2. Has there been any injury whispers? With the way he's playing I cant see him defending his US Open title

  • I think the deal with Rory is that he's no where near the player he was hyped to be after the runaway at Congo. He's basically the same as a bunch of other really good relatively young guys who have ups and downs.

If you follow him on Twitter, he's spending too much time chasing Wozniacki around the world. The night he missed the cut at the Players he posted a picture from JFK of a boarding pass to Rome, where she was playing that week. I think it's no coincidence that both of them have fallen off a little since they started dating. But, they're both young and have millions of dollars so they're probably having a lot of fun.
