  • Starts tonight in Kapalua!! 27-man field, winners only. Lucas Glover withdrew today with a knee injury. Dustin Johnson isn't playing, as he is recovering from surgery. No Donald or McIlroy either. There are probably a few others sitting it out too. Though Rory McIlroy reacquired his PGA Tour card this year, so we'll get to see a bit more of him over here - I'd love for him and Tiger to battle it out for the money title.

I know Tiger won the playoff with Ernie years ago, but have he or Phil ever played this thing? Such a beautiful course, I played both the Plantation and the Bay when Terps were in Maui in 2000. Those shots of the surfing cove just to the north of the Kapalua complex are always awesome. Giant pineapple field right next door too.

Should be an interesting year. Doubt Phil or Tiger show up until Torrey, but someone will get off to a good start. Not sure if I'm going to the Masters or not.

  • Tiger and Phil have both won this tournament before, but it seems like the biggest names like to take a few months off at the beginning of the year nowadays before tuning up for the Masters. I don't blame them - it's a long season, and you can only go so hard for so long. With the Presidents Cup, Chevron, etc., the season goes pretty much year-round for some of these guys. Might as well rest up and try to be in your best form for the spring/summer.

Tiger wont be at Torrey this year, he is playing in Abu Daubi that weekend. Now he may play at pebble a few weeks after, when he usually plays in Dubai

Interesting, the appearance fee trumps Torrey. I thought he hated Pebble since the last time he played with Costner and the 7 hour rounds.

Edit for the obligatory I know Kelly Tilghman doesn't prefer men but I'd smash her to bits post.

Edit for Watney going to get a two shot penalty for his caddie testing the green while reading a putt.

  • Bump for the final round being tonight on a Monday...Stricker still holding a good lead. Up 5 strokes, at -19

And i called it Tiger makes US debut at Pebble

Woods to start 2012 at Pebble « PGATOUR.com The Tour Report

Ending weeks of speculation, Tiger Woods announced via his website that his 2012 PGA TOUR debut will come at the ATT Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, which will be played Feb. 9-12. Woods has not played in the tournament since 2002.

  • Real nice 63 Stricker shot on Saturday. If he's healthy watch out. Have really enjoyed watching Miller and Faldo together again.

Tiger paired with Phil Knight at Pebble?

  • Johnson Wagner's (VT alum) 'stache is hilarious... I guess he'll be keeping it for a while after his win yesterday:

As changes go, Johnson Wagner’s mustache may not rate up there in news value to players who signed new club deals for 2012, but it sure is catching some attention.

Up front, Wagner concedes “my wife hates it,” but he said the thick black mustache is staying – at least until the spring.

“I plan to keep it until the first of April when I play in the Masters," he said. "The mustache will stay.”

There’s not much of a story behind the mustache, other than Wagner said he didn’t shave for a few weeks around Thanksgiving and “I didn’t want to waste all that effort, because I’ve never had that much facial hair.”

Wagner said he shaved what passed as a beard, but kind of liked the mustache. Yes, it has caused plenty of double-takes.

“I’ve had to acquire thick skin,” he said. “My friends back in Charlotte are calling me 'Juan' or 'Carlos.' I guess they think I look more Latin.”

I just read this. You seem to generally be an announcer-hater, but you like Johnny Miller? I didn't think there was a single golf fan in the world who actually liked Johnny Miller.

Really? I love MIller, and most golf fans I know do like him too. He's brutally honest, but that's what I like.

Not an announcer hater, just not Nantz and Hicks who think that by sheer will of entering a tourney Tiger's going to win and have no objectivity when they cover him. Miller is perfect for NBC, he and Pepper ask and say the tough things while Hicks, Maltbie, Koch, and Rolfing hear no evil and see no evil.

Faldo and Kostis are the balance on CBS to Nantz and McCord. Feherty is funny, but tries a bit too hard sometimes. Kostis actually asked Tiger a tough question after a round a few years back and Tiger's people told CBS not to let him ask Tiger any more questions. Kostis also spends way too much time analyzing swings with the Konika Minolta Biz Hub camera or whatever it's called.

'Zinger and Faldo were best team ever when they worked for ABC. Tirico's not bad on golf, but Curtis Strange is the worst.

My favorite golf announcing team would be Terry Gannon with Miller and Faldo in tower. On course would be Nobilo, Billy Ray Brown, and Pepper. SVP and Andy North on the anchor desk.

I guess we hang out in different golf circles, as most of my friends think he's an idiot. I don't mind the negativity - I just mind when he criticizes asinine things, as well as some of the exceptionally retarded things he says.

  • Interesting stop this week, the Hope has turned into the Humana, and it has some affiliation with Slick Willie. Shortened from 5 days to 4, Norman and Phil are playing. Weird tee time setup I saw, some groups of 4, a couple of 3 and a few twosomes.

  • Very happy that this event has moved to 4 rounds. The 5 round format is complete overkill and ruined any interest I had in the event.

The Pro Am isn't until Saturday? Thought I read Clinton wasn't playing with Norman until then.

  • Tiger playing with Donald and McIlroy first two rounds at Dubai. If I'm reading it right, live coverage on Golf Channel starting tomorrow morning at 4.

According to practice-tee buzz Tiger Woods, is earning between $1.7 million and $2.7 million in appearance fees to play this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, although he declined to give an exact figure when asked on Tuesday.

He did, however, address what is a fundamental distinction between the PGA Tour and the world’s other circuits. When asked if an appearance fee ever influenced his scheduling, Woods said, “It certainly does. That’s one of the reasons why a lot of the guys do play in Europe, they do get paid. . . . Only place we don’t get it is the U.S.”

  • Damn, Darren Clarke must have enjoyed that British Open victory. He has to be pushing 300 lbs.

  • Phil with +5 on the South Course yesterday.

  • Not a PGA Tourney, but lets face it, most people only care about, or mostly about Tiger (except sugarmag). Right in the thick of things at Abu Dhabi. Tied for 4th only 2 strokes back at the halfway point.

    MagooTerp

  • Tiger with a 66 to take the 3rd round lead against a really tough field at Abu Dhabi. Six of the OWGR Top 10 (Donald, Westwood, McIlroy, Kaymer, Schwartzel, Day) were in the field. It's by no means a slam dunk though - ten guys are within three strokes.

*Make that the co-lead. Robert Rock just birdied 18 to tie him. Those two are 2 strokes clear of the field.

  • Huge chokejob for Kyle Stanley here. I was rooting for Snedeker, but I still kind of feel bad for Stanley - he just made an 8 on the Par-5 18th with a 3-stroke lead. Laid up to 75 yards, which is standard with that lead, but then he put his 3rd in the drink, put his 5th on the back edge of the green to stay dry, and then 3-putted from 45 feet. Heading to a playoff now.

Win or lose, Stanley's game really impressed be this week. He's soooo long, and didn't hit a bad shot all day yesterday. His drive on #13 yesterday was one of the better drives I'd ever seen. And he made a ton of 10-foot par-saving putts down the stretch today until that last hole. He'll win sooner or later.

Not sure who has the edge here - Stanley with his length, or Snedeker with the momentum. They're playing 18 again.
