I used to walk around my neighborhood as a kid and do this to people all the time. It was rare to find a TV it would work with (this was in the 80s before universal remotes and the like), but when I found one, I was a maniac.
I could also listen in on people's conversations when they had cordless phones by using my walkie talkie or sometimes an AM radio.
Did both as well. One phone convo was between the wife and someone who sounded like her attorney. A few months later, they separated.
