lawn care and gardening thread

  • i dont think the weeds died over winter. My lawn is now inundated with chickweed.
I doubt Fertilizer + Preventer will be useful, time to move to Weed kill+control mode?

Just remember if you go Roundup it kills grass too.

    You sure?

Some day we need a thread about Monsanto and Roundup Ready crops.

All I know is I used it once on dandelions and it killed everything within 5 feet. I missed all the warnings on the label.

  • My wife once used Roundup on some weeds between the stones at the edge of our front patio. It ran off into the grass after we had some rain the next day, and there was substantial, immediate grass die-off in exactly the spots where the Roundup had gone. I was left with no doubt whatsoever that Roundup will kill grass. Apply with caution...

  • I wasn't trying to say it doesn't kill normal grass. Monsanto has made grass that it won't kill. They also make soy and other crops that it won't kill. Much easier to weed when you can splash the whole field with roundup. Maybe if we eat enough of this food, it won't kill us either!

  • Bumping this. Moved to the Burbs a few years ago and bought a house from some guys who were really into the garden/lawn thing. Been free-riding off their efforts but now the lawn has been deteriorating for several years and I think it's time for some attention this weekend. Weeds are already sprouting in my (many) bare spots.

    1. Do I want to apply a weed/crabgrass spread now or is it too late already?
    2. I heard an add for Pennington grass--does the seed matter much?
    3. Can I just toss the seed over the weed covered bare areas or do I have to get rid of the weeds first?
    3. Do I want seed or seed/fertilizer mix or fertilize first and then seed?
    4. I know you're supposed to aerate--can I get away with just digging up the bare spots and seeding there?
    5. When you've let the yard go to pot like I have, is it hopeless for me to do it myself and I should just pay through the nose for a service?

Sunny on Monday so the inevitable choke and spit with the mower. I'll have big ambitions to rake that shit up but I won't; my neighbor (Mr. GreenJeans) will of course bag all his clippings.

  • I park near the back door of my house. I was looking for something and walked out my front door to find two foot tall weeds where we once had grass.

Did I rip van winkle for two months or is it really still march?

The rate mine is growing after fertilizing I'm on a 3 day mowing cycle. I tried to wait 4 but my mower(3.75hp) could not handle it.

Now is not the time of year to apply new seed, that should be done in the fall. Plus if you do attempt to seed, don't apply pre emergent weed block as it will prevent the seed you put down from germinating. If I were you I'd just watch basketball this weekend and attack this problem in the fall.

  • I have a small backyard, roughly 20 feet by 20 feet (rowhouse in the city). The grass is absolute trash. like 80% weed and nothing will grow unless I dig everything up and start over because the soil is terrible as well. Is that too large of an area to just pull everything up and put mulch down with some plants? I'd really like to do a brick courtyard type thing but don't want to spend the money on that now.

My quote function is not working; no matter.

What kind of fertilizer are you using that you are already on a 3 day cycle.

One major suggestion I have for choice of fertilizer is to use a product that is high in (WIN) Water Insoluble Nitrogen. At least 30 to 40% and if possible as much as 70%. I use a 70% WIN product, and only have to fertilize 2 or 3x a year. You have to calculate the percentage usually, but this is a very easy formula. WIN is also known as a slow release fertilizer.

Some of the benefits are, it greens just as fast as Water Soluble Nitrogen, but instead of getting exessive top growth, the energy goes more into the roots, for much slower growth during the growing season. Right now my grass is very green, and yet I probably won't have to mow for the first time until sometime next week or next weekend.

Yeah if you don't mind using a toxic product made by a company that is trying to ruin the world food supply. Go for it!

I used Ace Hardwares store brand, the #'s on the bag were 29-3-3. The grass that is growing like crazy is some Kentucky 31 that a planted last fall. The established lawn is growing at about half that rate. I've also had to mow 3 times between November and February. I'm in Sw Va so it's possible our winter has been a little more mild.

It's probably a fast realease fertilizer (Water Solulable). Those are usually associated with four and five step programs, that you would get from big box stores. If you still have the bag, look on the label and see if you can find a percentage for either "W-I-N" or slow release fertilizer. Then take that # and divide it by 29 x 100 and that will give you the percentage of slow release fertilizer. For example you see a WIN of 2.5: (2.5/29= .0862068 x 100) = 8.6% slow release fert. As I mentioned earlier I try to use a minimum of 35% slow release fert, and this year have converted to a 70% slow release for a 2 step application.
