You have to choose one state to live in

    Sorry, I don't know what I am talking about. I was assuming South Central is Anacostia. Cue someone telling me Anacostia is pretty great.

    Its not. But Id rather live in a bad area very close to a great city (not with a family, mind you), than 5 hours from civilization in a horrible beaten down farming region

  • You guys are forgetting important concepts. You get to take your job. This means you're making the money you make here anywhere else. Clearly take yourself to the midwest for 5 years, hope for an ok sized city but not a metropolis where you live dirt cheap, hang out with your family and friends and bank tons of money.

  • South Carolina and Georgia should be on no lists. North/west South Carolina is beyond awful. If you live by the coast SC would be fine, but living 3 hours inland is not a risk worth taking.

    Georgia is a little better because you at least have the coast and Atlanta is tolerable, but west Georgia is literally as bad/worse than Alabama. If I'm playing risk/reward I need a ceiling higher than ATL/Georgia coast for what I could end up dealing with.

    Most of NJ is tolerable unless you're stuck in Camden/the area between central jersey and the shore. Vermont/NH aren't bad options. Hawaii as well obviously.

    3) Rhode Island
    4) Maryland
    5) New Jersey/Conn

    Everywhere else is way, way too much of a downside risk

  • WSJ just came out with a study of unhealthiest states using a variety of metrics (physical and mental + education levels) and Delaware clocked in at #4. There are some really terrible parts of Delaware and very few places you'd really want to live.

    The benefit of course is even if you live somewhere shitty it isn't far to go to somewhere not so shitty.

    EDIT: I mean you are right about the women and much of the natural beauty, but I could list 100 reasons you would never want to live in Ukraine for 5 years, on top of the fact that it is the biggest country in Europe so there is a gigantic likelihood you end up in backwards nowhereland

    Wyoming. It's second-lowest in population density. Less people live in Wyoming than DC. Yellowstone's nice for a (short) visit and all, but there isn't a single place in that state I'd want to live.

    Given the jobs/friends factor, I could live in Jackson. Outdoorsy stuff abounds regardless of time of year, and I'm sure I could find a way to scam the super rich tourists who show up. Other than that though, you're right. While beautiful, much of the state is really isolated from civilization.

  • Kentucky is another one where there is a handful of places that would be doable, but certain places that would scare the hell out of me to have to live there.

    Lowest average temperature (in winter, anyway) is North Dakota, though I think northern Minnesota is the coldest spot in the lower 48. A few posts above claimed Wyoming as the lowest pop density. Take your pick.

  • As far as European countries, I'd have to consider Greece, Portugal and Denmark given the parameters of this question. I'd be interested to see if anyone has strong opinions on those three. Not really familar with non-coastal Greece or Portugal, but the beaches were great, and Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities

  • Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona have to also bring up the rear. Vegas is great for a visit, but it would suck to live there. And there's only about a .2% chance you land in Vegas, otherwise the best you're hoping for is Reno.

  • I posted my thoughts earlier but I think it didn't go through. I am shooting holes in all the states:

    Hawaii: A drive through Kauai taught me that parts of that state are straight up Third World.
    Florida: Are you kidding me? Even the majority of their cities suck. Have fun in crapholes like Jacksonville or Orlando...if you're lucky.
    New York would have been a decent option had I never been to Binghamton.

    I'm surprised there's been no love for Minnesota. Sure it's cold as hell but great quality of life, good outdoor stuff, mostly white people.

    I think Colorado, Oregon and Maryland are strong choices but if I had to decide, I'd choose Virginia. If you luck out, you live in my neighborhood. If you roll snake-eyes, you live in HMPAOF's neighborhood. shrug

    Yeah, I'm sure North and South Dakota and Wyoming would all be in my bottom 10, if not 5. At least with Minnesota you have a chance at Minneapolis and the ability to purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka
