We are now officially a banana republic.

  • I wonder why no one is talking about this...

I can not believe that I missed this yesterday when filing my latest Republican plan to put us back to work in the sweat shops. I apologize Suquers.

“It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods,” Gingrich said then, “entrapping children in, first of all, child laws, which are truly stupid.”
Children in poor neighborhoods, he said, should be allowed to serve as janitors in their schools to earn money and develop a connection to the school.

Don't let me down guys, this is THE LEADING INTELLECT of the GOP, defend him. He is your hero, after all.

Gingrich: Poor Kids Don’t Work ‘Unless It’s Illegal’ - Yahoo! News

From Yahoo! News: DES MOINES, Iowa – After saying recently that child labor laws are “truly stupid,” Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Thursday told an Iowa audience that children in poor neighborhoods have “no habits of working” nor getting paid for their endeavors “unless it’s illegal.”

Seriously, how many grants go to small businesses that fail?

Why should any grants be going to businesses, large or small? Why should farmers receive subsidies?

I was a janitor at Greenbelt Jr High for 4 years while going to MD. I don't feel abused.

  • I'm new to this board, so not sure if you were some kind of child genius, but you probably weren't a minor who qualified under child labor laws for the four years when you were going to Maryland. I did plenty of things in college that we don't allow children to do.

  • Because businesses get grants all the time, only now it's a problem?

And those are dyed in the wool Repubs getting those farm subsidies, too, let's not act as if you aren't buying their vote.

    TheRawDogg

  • The evil of farm subsidies cuts across both parties.

    neal990

  • To be fair, Republicans actually get far more in farm subsidies...and the GOP has been horrendously two-faced when it comes to that issue. More Republicans get money from those interests; more Republicans represent those interests; more voters from Republican districts get those subsidies; and it was the Republicans who voted to override Bush's veto on farm subsidies as well as Republicans who opposed cutting farm subsidies during this round of budget talks. Not exactly a very principled position from the party (supposedly) taking the lead on cutting govt. spending and govt. subsidies.

[I was trying to link some studies found through random google links but this won't work for me.]

  • And Democrats aren't also slaves to big corn?

    neal990

  • Of course, but it's all relative. But hopefully things are changing. I believe something like 40 Democrats voted earlier this year to end corn subsidies (although the measure eventually failed). That's a substantial number. And if the GOP presidential candidate also comes out against such subsidies, maybe we can have some movement on the issue. Of course, the 2 GOP candidates who haven't yet come out against it are Gingrich and ROmney (with Gingrich being a strong proponent of such subsidies).

  • What is interesting about Solyndra is that an Obama contributor gets 600m for a company that is about to fail after pressure from the administration to give it them.
There is mass corruption in both parties for you folks who act like its no big deal-----you are a problem.

  • Good ol' Wall Street. Geez, at least no one EVER had to pitch money in their direction to save their asses. At least nothing approaching the HALF A BILLION dollars that Solyndra got.

    Got that? Half a billion.

Man how does the Republic survive throwing around such GINORMOUS sums of money around? I'm guessing that those guys on Wall Street will reflect wonderful judgment in their campaign contributions. Surely they will never exceed the limits on contributions because they are such responsible stewards of other's money, am I right? Or what.

I hope that you'll credit me for being fair minded, when I re-emphasize to you that I don't think that businesses should receive money from the government, whether they are owned by Dems or Pubs, libs or cons.

stRaw Dogg, you do know that Obama has received far more money from "Wall Street" than any other candidates, right? And since I'm finally tired of reading your ridiculously partisan posts, I am joining the big parade and putting you on "Ignore."

  • What I don't get is that people on the left complain about how much big business tries to influence government with money, and yet they advocate further control of business by government. If you feel that government is too susceptible to big monied interests, shouldn't the solution be to cut off the incentive for business to control government by giving the government less direct influence over business? The more power you give government to pick winners and losers, the more power the big money lobbyists are going to have.

    *******

Sensenbrenner threatened Holder with impeachment. The way he put it was that the impeachment procedure's power to compel documents and testimony is plenary and not subject to the department's claims of privilege, and if Holder won't start telling the truth, what choice does he have?

The ATF went to several gun dealers to make large purchases for use in "Fast and Furious." Several of the gun dealers were wary of making such suspiciously large sales but went through with it because the ATF asked them to. Meanwhile, ATF officials discussed using these large sales as anecdotal evidence to support a push for tougher regulations on gun dealers.
