Walking Dead....

I know I'm supposed to suspend disbelief but to make shows like this work the human characters still have to speak and act in a recognizable way.

In a show like this, the human characters need to be more recognizable. The point of this show is a study of human behavior, thrusting 'real' people into fantastic circumstances. The little things are magnified.

  • I just want zombies to attack the house. Is that so hard?

Yeah although I do generally shut off my brain when watching shows like this, I am really bewildered by the fact that there has been NO explanation about how they haven't had a single zombie wander onto the property. They have a house that is lit up like the sun every night surrounded by a crappy fence, and it doesn't even seem like they have anybody keeping watch. Is there a moat or other protective measures we don't know about, did they address that in the comics?

  • There are so few survivors that I doubt if canned ham is really that much of a delicacy. I mean, if zombies don't eat dead stuff then there have to be thousands of empty grocery stores around. They should never run out of food or gasoline (although obviously they have to pass zombies to get to them).

  • Is otis now a zombie or do you not become one once a certain amount of your body has been consumed?

And what happens to the consumed flesh? Do zombies take dumps? I guess a zombie could just keep eating until it explodes? I really like this show.

  • Does a zombie eventually "die" if they don't eat for a long enough time?

This. Since all cells eventually die, you'd think the zombies would eventually rot away given enough time. Despite the fact that they are undead, the body still burns calories to operate. I'm still unclear as to how long it has been since the initial outbreak of zombie apocalypse, but you would think that if you could ride it out for a year, most zombies would be gone.

Different schools of thought on that. I think under the traditional, George Romero view zombies never starve to death. But some more recent zombie movies have them eventually starving.

In some zombie literature/movies the zombies don't go after humans for sustenance, they go after humans just to bite them as a means of spreading the zombie bug. So the zombie that you see isn't actually a living, breathing organism, it is just a vessel for the virus/bacteria/whatever to spread.

    neal990

  • Right. These things are clearly actively decomposing so it seems reasonable to assume that if you can make it 6 months the majority of the outbreak zombies would be long gone or at least at a point where they are no longer mobile.

  • Yeah, that's not really a Walking Dead thing, just a general zombie thing that bothers me.

You'd think they would run out of energy.

Honestly, the best thing would be if they just never found her.

    agreed.

  • I think an explanation for why there aren't random Zombies attacking the farm is that they tend to run in pacts and migrate where they hear loud noises and Hershel's farm is kind of in the middle of nowhere so as long as they don't go shooting guns off or causing explosions, there would be no reason for Zombies to be attracted to such a remote location.

I agree with your logically sound bewilderment, but mainly I just want to see more zombies. When you start going down the road of deducing zombies' calorie burn rate is when this stops being fun. I don't want to see them reestablish an agrarian society in real-time. I want an endless supply of zombies, and I want to see at least one or two notice the bright goddamn lights coming from this house. Even the survivors aren't taking this shit seriously anymore, they're fornicating all over the place.

  • BTW, Dave Jacoby on the BS Report had the perfect defense of this show. His only complaint was not enough exotic or different weapons to kill zombies.

His rant against "internet smart people" that essentially take the fun out of everything was pretty good too.

  • The farm storyline has plenty of action to pull from if it wants to follow the comics. There is also an entire season's worth of material from one of the main villains if they choose to go that route, so I'm willing to stick with it unless it fumbles all the potential it has in the future. It's definitely a slow burn, though.

I'm biased toward the run time because I always DVR it and watch Monday.

  • Is the run-time really 35 minutes? 42-45 is standard for cable.

    WheresWallace

  • Speaking of loud noises, I don't think setting up a firing range a few hundred yards from the house is a very good idea.

Don't get me started on the lights and the fresh bread and milk.

    strOterp

  • Yeah, I DVR too so don't notice run times. But I DVR everything but sports

This week's episode was 42:45 including the opening titles.

  • People get upset about the commercials because they stack them up in the 2nd half of the show. They usually go commercial-free (or at least it seems that way) for the first 20-25 minutes or so.

  • The zombie logic is well within my threshold for suspension of disbelief. I just think that all the problems with the show (primarily the weak writing) become glaring when there are fewer 'walkers' encountered in a given episode. I may have to give up on it if this season doesn't close in spectacular fashion. Pregnancy tests and sex-capades are not what I'm looking for in my zombie show! There is a reason I don't watch Gray's Anatomy.

  • My brief, single post, on this thread.

I liked the 1st season and had high hopes for season 2. Quit watching it already.

    1. I do not like soap operas. What made the show interesting was zombies killing people. While a couple of key characters may be untouchable, none of this lot of bad actors should be immune to being zombie food.

    2. Too little zombie action.

    3. I dont give a damn about the lost girl or the little boy. Why waste 2 episodes trying to play to the sensibilities of the viewers who "love children." the type of viewers watching this show want to see zombies munch children. that is the audience you are playing to AMC. Viewers that love children are watching lassie.

Many of Pitt's 58 "rushing attempts" were the result qb Tino Sunseri fleeing the pocket like a man whose clothes were on fire.

Taking Zombies to the Next Level

Jonah Goldberg writes on NRO: One of my favorite shows these days is Walking Dead, AMC’s breakout post-apocalyptic hit in which a few human survivors try to endure in a world overrun by zombies. A big part of the show’s appeal is its realism. And for sci-fi in particular it really does have a cinéma . . .

  • Yes, I often rely solely on realism and plausibility for a show based around the concept of the dead rising from the grave to devour the flesh of the living.

And any writer that references "zombie cannon" can go to hell.

  • The reason the zombies aren't all over the farm is because there is a fence that encircles it. Zombies can't climb fences. It's Science (Fiction).
