Walking Dead....

Sorry if this has been already discussed, but how does the house still have working electricity? Generator? I must have missed the part where this was explained.

The only other thing I could think is that they have solar or wind or hydro or something. Being a farm out in the middle of nowhere, that's not totally out of the question. Still, it needs an explanation.

The other thing is why are they leaving all of their lights on at night? That's like saying "HEY ZOMBIES!!!! ALIVE PEOPLE ARE HERE!!!"

As soon as Shane came back alone, I knew what had happened, but I was hoping Shane would have at least given the poor bastard a head shot. It's not like the zombies still wouldn't have munched on him, but I'll take one to the dome over shredded to death any day.

I think the zombies are attracted to living human flesh, even though they'll eat dead flesh in a pinch (this is why they're not all eating each other all the time).

So, by leaving Otis alive, Otis becomes bait rather than just another dead body. If Otis were dead, the zombies would go after Shane, he being the more yummy flesh.

Really intense episode, and my theory on the house having power is that there are still things functioning as normal (i.e. a power station) because they're robust and haven't been overrun by zombies yet. I could see this being the case in a rural area.

  • I try not to get bogged down in the logistical stuff (why is the power still on? how is the farmhouse a zombie free zone, etc.).

They also seem to be attracted to movement, so him there writhing on the ground makes a more appealing target as well

yes, why are they still sitting on top of the camper looking only one direction, especially after being attacked from the other side in an earlier episode

gary williams, they should be looking 360 degrees and reminding each other about fool me once

not related: the wife from prison break is really starting to irritate me like some of this board complains about january jones on mad men; i wonder if there is some sort of amc channel writer's bias about 30 yr old wives that sepinwall should investigate. Her character consists of arguing with ex-lover, whining about her child/child's doctor/reason to live/ad infinitum............and has way too much screen time for more whining

i always gave jj a pass on mad men because she reminds me of my mom and those were different times etc but now i see why all the hate

    winterps

  • January Jones can't act but her way of not acting works on Mad Men because the character is supposed to be cold, bitter, and childish. So the stiffness and blank stares make sense.

The best characters on Walking Dead by far are Shane, Daryl, and Rick. Everyone else is just there.

I read a blog post the other night that basically said the same thing, but their point was that there wasn't *anyone* who was consistently interesting enough to root for or against all the time. That changes now with Shane...he's now the most interesting character by far, because he's shown he is capable of just about anything (murder, sexual assault, etc.) and is now unstable and can't live with himself.

  • I actually like Rick as a character. I know a lot of the blog posts I've seen have hated on his speeches/soliloquoys, particularly when he starts talking to God or about faith, but I kind of dig them. I like him as having this almost unwavering optimism in the face of the unrelenting horror.

Part of the problem with blogs and whatnot is that in general "the internet" doesn't like people talking about God/Jesus/faith in the traditional Christian sense. But I find Rick compelling in his need to have faith to keep going.

Rick is the friggin man. As I mentioned about last Sunday's ep (october 23), you saw him finally break. He woke up in a coma, had no idea about the zombie apocalypse, no clue where his family was and then wasn't close with the survivor group (but still put his neck on the line to save 'em) ... he's always been a leader and go to guy. Then when his son gets shot under his watch he loses it.

Shane has been shady since the first episode and they have done a good job throwing twists and turns with his character.

Daryl has grown a bit soft, but it's probably building up for something. He should be killing 30 zombs in each ep by himself.

  • Don't want to read all this for the spoiler factor, but does AMC have on OnDemand feature? I want to catch up with this series.

Can't answer this... but I do know the 1st season is on Netflix.

If you can find the first season (only six episodes), I'm pretty sure comcast/verizon on-demand should have this season's episodes.

    WheresWallace

  • If you want to watch, do it quick. AMC only keeps like 3 or 4 weeks of their stuff up on demand at a time.

  • Lori I think is doing a phenomenal job as an actress, and I gotta give it up to Carl as well. The surgery scenes were very compelling, and the Lori character is finally getting a little depth. I think that up until this point it's been a writing issue with her character, but she finally showed some teeth in the woods and has been great in the house so far.

The kid who plays Carl is just an awesome sick and dying kid. I don't remember him being great before this (another character that just blended), but he's been awesome for the past ep or two. Carl and Sally Draper need to grow up and have some sweet megachildactor/ress babies.

Shane/Daryl/Rick are all solid, and I like Dale as well. I think that some of Rick's dialogue is a bit over the top ("He talked... about... the DEER"), but this is a post-apocalyptic zombie world.

I get extremely upset with this criticism. Sure, it's the second season, but we had SIX episodes in season one and three episodes so far this season. And the first season had to cram a whole lot of story into a relatively short span (at least for an American TV drama). It's safe to call it one of the choppiest debuts we've ever seen on US television.

Yes, the characters were extremely flat after the first season... but this season has given us a lot more reason to care about guys like Daryl and Shane, and seems to be starting to work on Dale and Glen, among others. People seem to want an entire cadre of fully-fleshed out characters but I just don't know how realistic that is after nine eps. I'd submit that the depth is finally starting to show up in the majority of the main characters. Hell, the vet is already a pretty damn rounded side character, and he's barely had any screen time.

And for those of you who have read the graphic novels... there really wasn't much for the writers to work with outside of Rick. Hell, it's probably not a coincidence that the most interesting character is Shane (and again those of you who have read it probably know why I say that).

I agree. Not until you get to a few of the later characters. Two in particular that I'm thinking of, one good and one bad. Those two have potential for days and days.

I just re-read the first volume (issues #1-6) for the first time in quite some time the other day. I was pretty surprised by how flat the characters were--I just didn't remember it that way.

And even the storylines were sparse. For example, Rick rediscovering his family was damn near LOL bad... at least the series spruced that up quite a bit. I'll give the TV writers a ton of credit for filling in a lot of gaps in both character and plot so far. Another example is that they made me appreciate the impact of Morgan and his son on Rick a lot more than I did in Issue #1, where they didn't really seem to matter much.

The whole thing is not epic, and lately has been fairly uninteresting. What it did have, was taking on the whole concept of zombie apocalypse beyond one book, or one comic, or one movie. Something like what World War Z might be if it were tied together.

    SATerp

  • They said that Sophia was lost "3 days ago", and since she was lost 3 or so episodes ago, that would make each episode another day, by my guesstimate, or a week of real time = one day of their time..

Anyone going to stick around for Hell on Wheels?

  • Definitely gonna give Hell on Wheels a shot. Looks good.
