Virginia has very specific laws about when the death penalty can be applied. This case clearly didn't fall under any of them.

No, that's not really the standard -- that implies that premeditated=death penalty, and there isn't a state in the country where that is true. Here, for example, even if he had been found guilty of first-degree murder, he was not eligible for the death penalty because the prosecutors had not charged this as a capital offense.

Anyway, as a general matter and not talking just specifically to Virginia, the death penalty is reserved for the most heinous of murderers. Not just the most heinous criminals, but the most heinous murderers. Even most murderers, in most premeditated killings, don't get the death penalty, even in states that apply the death penalty.

Not sure how they acquitted the B&E charge. Breaking down the door seems like the least disputed part of this tragedy.

Serious. It never got physical, but the rhetoric was pretty over the top from both sides. I was young, and yes it helped me immensely moving forward in my relationships. I learned how to control my emotions better, and I learned what to look for in a female (or more accurately, what to stay away from).

I went to a couple of VA State Pens in college. I think the highest level we went through was a Level 3 (VA goes up to, what, 5?). It was definitely an eye-opener. I'll never forget walking into one of the "pods" and having the whole population start kicking and yelling out their doors. My favorite line: "Wanna see this dick?" to a bunch of college aged dudes (the ladies were trying to hide behind us).

LOL at expecting the death penalty for this. I'm thrilled he didn't get off on manslaughter, which really wasn't that ridiculous of a defense.
