Tipping Thread (yet another)

  • Sat in the new mezzanine seats last night. I'd sat there before the construction but this was my first time post expansion. The seats are great -- overhead heaters and waitress service with unlimited free food.

There are two servers per section-- they divide the sections in half with a server each getting a side. They are college girls prob working for a little extra spending money or maybe even to pay bills. These girls work their asses off during the game running back and forth for over 3.5 hours.

Our section was a bunch of cheap bastards -- I didn't see one guy put their hand in their pocket to tip these girls. Shout out to NYCTerp05 who was my guest for the evening for having to make up for those cheap bastards. The guy earns a salary that can't even cover his living expenses (see his previous thread on how shitty his job is) but stepped up giving our server a 20 spot. I don't know if it is Marylanders or Terp fans but they were some cheapskates lastnight.

  • I'd give something at the end of the game, especially if you had a lot of stuff coming to the box, but I wouldn't tip with every order.

    PredaTerp

  • Were you stuffing your face the whole time and making her go back and forth? For just a couple times, I'd say 5-10 bucks a person is OK.

  • we each had a few sodas (essentially mixers). I was so full from the tailgate so didn't eat much -- maybe a round of popcorn and nacho chips. $5-10 is per person is about right in my book, not to mention there's 95% chance these kids are students at UMD so you gotta bump it up just for that. I watched 30 guys walk out of the stadium barely even thanking the girls.

    goterpss

  • If I was being really gluttonous $20 for the night or else at least $10 for an average night.

  • G$ thanks for the shoutout, but please re-read Ermann's post on profanity.

As an aside, I'm not a big fan of the mezzanine seats. I kind of felt disconnected from the game because of the overhead lights(definitely makes it harder to see the game) and not being in the main seating bowl. The fans in our section were kind of lame. I dont care much for extraneous creature comforts like the heatlamps (I ended up stripping down to a t-shirt it was so hot), and I stuff my face at the tailgate so the in seat food service and included food doesnt do much for me.

  • don't kick a gift horse in the mouth, gotta plug the seats.
The bench seating is just so uncomfortable. Also, you get one or two fat guys in the row and the rest of the row is getting closer to each other than I get on some second dates.

The heaters were on on too high, agree on the lights, but the view is a perfect height level for football -- I wouldn't want to be any higher or lower. Also, not having to stand on line for the mixers is clutch.

  • oh and speaking of profanity and lame crowd, the guy in front of us asked us not to use the F bombs. He was a nice enough guy about it and I understand that he was bringing what appeared to be his granddaughters to the game, but it's a saturday night in a big college football game the kids are going to hear some expletives just deal with it. It kinda sucked that we let a few F bombs slip out and had to apologize.

    goterpss

  • I would think $5-10, but I have to imagine that those girls get paid $8-10 an hour as is.

I've been to enough of these games as a student and now parent that it definitley pisses me off when a bunch of pathetic drunks are yelling profanities right in my kids ears. If you don't know how to handle yourself in a crowd with familys, please don't go. I love people getting loud and crazy but come on this isn't your mom's house.

  • Thanks Ward, but I hate to the break the news to you that your children will hear expletives throughout the course of their lives. It doesn't make anyone a good or bad person to use or not use them. Attending a college football game on a saturday night isn't necessarily family hour and you'll likely hear a few. If shielding your children from profanities is that important to you I suggest a G rated disney film or something else on a saturday night.

It was a tight football game, we weren't out of control drunks but a couple of intense Maryland fans. The gentlemen asked us politely and we tried our best to refrain, we were high fiving during the game so I doubt he was that miffed. He did order about 6 hot chocolates for his crew among other items and stiffed a college girl on a tip; that to me is a little more telling than using a few f bombs after an interception. Teach your kids/grandkids not to be cheapos.

If you can't handle taking your kids to an environment where you know your kids are going to be "subjected" to that, please don't go.

  • 1) LOL at getting upset about swear words at a football game. Come on, gramps.

    2) I had the same thoughts about the mezzanine seats when walking by. Lights were on way too high, no atmosphere, etc. It would be nice if it was really cold or rainy, but otherwise I'll stay outside with my people.

    3) Not sure why you would expect to tip at a college game. Would you tip the kids at the concession stands? They're probably doing as much work, and they don't get paid anything a lot of the time.

    TheArsenal

  • How much are those seats?

Concession people are standing there. These girls are running up and down the sections. No different than a waitress.

  • I tip the concessions people from time to time, especially if I do a big order (it's rare). I had a beer lady at Shea Stadium who I swear my seatmates and I put her kid through college.

These girls are acting as waitresses and running back and forth. There's waitress service at plenty of professional sports games and I'll tip. Fyi, you'll get better service and it's a nice thing to do. These girls are most likely UMD students so it's even more so.

I don't see why you'd tip them any differently than a beer/hot dog vendor at a baseball game though. Maybe a buck an item? Or a little more if you're feeling generous solely because they're working students at your alma mater. $20 seems slightly excessive to me, though I'm sure she appreciated it.

the $20 covered both myself and goterpss. i think $10 per person is reasonable, also the seats were free so i was feeling generous. and i was fan of the game.

  • i got the hookup and invited NYCTerp05 as my guest. Also, I'm charging NYCTerps05 $10 as storage fee for housing his cooler in my car all football season:)

That seems like a silly distinction, but I think that's probably the way that it works in practice, so I'm not going to argue. The problem here seems to be that the food was free, so people didn't see the need to tip. You don't generally tip when you are getting something for free (what's 20% of 0) so I can understand why people left without tipping. It's not because they are cheap. Tipping has a lot to do with social tradition, and it's not a tradition to tip people when you get free stuff. May not be fair, but neither is the standing/running distinction either.
