The Wire debuted 10 years ago

  • Unlike most TV series, The Wire filmed on the streets it depicted, and many of the New York–, L.A.-, and London-based cast and crew were quickly given a taste of life in Baltimore.

Andre Royo: They called me and told me I got the part of Bubbles, and my wife got excited. “Oh, shit! You got the part!” Packing her bag for L.A., and I’m like, “Nah, nah, we filming in Baltimore.” And she unpacked real quickly: “I’ll see you when you come home.”

Hassan Johnson (Wee-Bey Brice, Barksdale gang soldier): Baltimore was a culture shock.

Lance Reddick (Col. Cedric Daniels): I feel like in terms of authenticity, the locations were chosen so carefully by people who actually knew the city.

Larry Gilliard Jr. (D’Angelo Barksdale, Barksdale gang dealer): I grew up in West Baltimore, and I remember reading the script and seeing the streets and the neighborhoods, and I’m like, “I know exactly where these places are.”

    J. D. Williams (Preston “Bodie” Broadus, Barksdale gang dealer): “The Pit” [where Bodie, D’Angelo, and the other Barksdale employees dealt] was in a courtyard of an actual housing complex.

Michael B. Jordan (Wallace, Barksdale gang dealer): This is some real shit. It was real to the point where crackheads would come up and try to cop. I had fake money, and they would come over, and an exchange would go down. I would think they were part of the crew, and I’d make the exchange. Then security would come around and be like, “No! No! No!” and break it up. I was like, “Oh, shit! That’s really a crack-head! I’m sorry! I’m not really a drug dealer!”

Clarke Peters: Having spent so much time in England, Baltimore was a wonderful education on American politics, American history, American society. And although this was centered in Baltimore, it was easy to see in a very short period of time how Baltimore was just every major city in America.

Wendell Pierce (Det. William “Bunk” Moreland): The great thing about shooting in Baltimore was we were each other’s best company. We worked hard, long hours, but we partied hard, too, man. One bar made the mistake of having celebrity-bartender night. It happened one time, and one time only! That’s all I need to say!

Idris Elba: We smoked a lot of good weed, did a lot of strip clubs. A lot of that.

Michael B. Jordan: I kind of grew up around Idris and Wendell and Clarke and everybody. I would just tag along, going to strip clubs. I became a man in Baltimore with those guys

  • I remember first seeing the ads for it and thinking that it looked like it was going to suck, but that I'd give it a shot anyway because I liked Homicide. I can safely say that I never have and never will make a decision that fortuitous ever again.

  • Picked up seasons 1-3 from Target for $17 each...made my weekend

  • I still haven't sat down and watched this and I've had HBOGo for 2 months now.

I hope to watch the entire series while on paternity leave.

RaiseHigh said... No. This is jtp's doing. He's kept me around for his bizarre HOF resume.

  • I had no idea what it was or that it even existed. I was flipping through channels one night and landed on it and immediately recognized it was Baltimore. I kept watching. Great decision.

That's why I decided to play catchup after season 2, just because of the Baltimore angle. It's the first TV show I ever did the DVD catchup thing for.

Also, it makes me feel old.

  • I definitely had no clue about the show until I was reading a review of season 2 after it ended in Entertainment Weekly. Picked up season 1 at Best Buy a week or two later and the rest is history.

    fearthenoodle

  • I couldn't wait for the show to start because I saw The Corner on HBO...if it wasn't for The Corner I would have missed 5 years of unparalleled TV

  • I didnt watch it until 2 years ago. Bill Simmons says holding off on a show like that is like holding onto a good bottle of wine. you know its going to be so good but you dont want it to be over. I'm letting Breaking Bad age a bit more before I break that one open.

    AlphaOmega

  • Bill Simmons is a fucking idiot.

    bkmalik

  • That makes no sense

    strOterp

  • Also, debuted is such a weird word when you see it written out.

  • I watched the whole series over the past couple of months, and I have to admit when I first started watching Season 1 it did seem surprisingly dated. Not that it doesn't hold up, but makes you realize how quickly technology changes.

  • Best Series EVAR!

Honestly, as somebody who grew up in Bmore and is somewhat familiar with the neighborhoods depicted and the happenings of city hall and the like, I dont see how another television show could be more authentic.

I also went to school to study film, and ALL of my film teachers absolutely loved this show. It only gets better with time.(Bill Simmons is still a fucking idiot)

Watch how much evil we call the crime picks up...There is nothing else to do Sal!- Ray Lewis

  • had a good conversation about the wire with my math teacher from inner city bmore. I cant stand her but she respected how I said it was the greatest show ever (never seen it yet). asked who my favorite character was. I just said Lester Freamon or McNulty randomly and then she talked about how she loves this omar guy.

  • My friends are all idiots. That is all I have to say. I have been ranting and raving about the Wire since I started/finished watching in '10 and none of them have watched it out of spite. My brother, my roommates, my cousins all of them are idiots. I keep telling them to watch it and get ready for 5 seasons of awesome but they are just too stupid. Also I have no one to talk about the series except all you internet basement posters and that makes me sad.

What makes that even worse is the major case from that season was loosely based on a case that Ed Burns investigated from the mid-80s.

I started watching from season 1 just because it was a Baltimore show. It wasn't until S3 I was understanding the greatness of it, partly because TV, as a whole, was gaining a lot of respect critically but a few of us on the board began talking about it in much grander terms.

The Wire is the soccer of TV drama. You must feel very conflicted.

  • I randomly spent an afternoon driving around Baltimore with David Simon when he still worked at The Sun and I was in like 5th grade. Cool guy.

  • DGF: Is this show supposed to be good or something?

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

    Omar Little

  • Has it really been 10 years? A very annoying side note. I started watching when it was already at the end of season 2 so I tried catching up by watching HBO on Demand. But the episode of the immediate aftermath of Kima getting shot was skipped by Comcast. So annoying.
