The Republic of South Sudan (New Country!)

New joint drops Saturday. Pretty exciting times for geography nerds. Lots of Sporcle quizzes will need updating. In addition to the changed map of Africa, Sudan drops from its perches as largest country in Africa and 10th-largest in the world. Algeria inherits both titles (but remains Landon Donovan's bitch).
Also, since Djimon Honsu's character in Gladiator was named Juba, and Juba will be the capital of South Sudan, I think he should show up at the ceremony and say "Now we are free." Maybe he could bury a figurine of John Garang for good measure.

30th highest oil producing country and I guess South Sudan has 3/4 of the oil. Gotta count for something right? Too bad South Sudan will be landlocked and their old neighbors in the north will probably try to kill them (dagger).

BTW anybody who's interested in the recent history of Sudan should read What is the What by Dave Eggers. Great book that manages to not be horribly depressing despite being about some pretty terrible stuff.

I remember reading something in the Economist last year that they have like 30 miles of paved roads in all of South Sudan. It would basically be like us letting the north half (ok, everything but the Gulf coast) of Mississippi secede and become its own country.
