The "10 Least-Douchiest Bars in DC"

  • Also, The Brixton on U is badass. If the beer wasn't so expensive, I might live there.

This is a good start to a list. I'd like to add Red Derby and Star and Shamrock (amazing place to watch football)

Yeah I should have had red derby on there too. Also Looking Glass and DC Reynolds for the petworthians.

I work at a bar in DC (RFD) so I'm more qualified than all you idiots so I'll be nice this morning and tell you all which bars are cool:

RFD Fado The Queen Vic The Pug Town Tavern Red Derby Old Glory Mellow Mushroom Smith Common Solly's

Don't get me wrong, I like good beer and appreciate RFDs, but they need to get a vibe. Its like a cafeteria in there.

  • Blaguard next to Jack Rose was pretty cool from what I remember too.

  • Brixton pawns. Really really nice Roof Deck bar.

The passenger is pretty cool too

I just embarrassed myself with this post

RFD is certainly my favorite pre caps game spot, but you are right, it's soulless inside.

Tough one. If I was single the answer is douches because it's much easier to get laid at a douchy bar than a hipster bar.

    another good point.

hipsters just get upset that "your type" is invading their bar. even if it isn't their bar. bastards.

  • Also for the more adventurous, Jimmy Valentines is a pretty crazy late night spot. It literally doesn't close. A month or so ago we had about 10 people there and they said they wouldn't close - DJ and all - until we left. We walked out of there at 5:30. Walking home, I saw a baby selling crack.

    Good spot, but very expensive.

I have a soft spot for Caddie's in Bethesda as far as sports bars go.

caddies is my spot as i live right by there. haven't found any great sports bars in DC yet though. arlington has a few decent spots.

but my cousin lives right next to cleveland park bar & grill ... it's not bad. great food, good tv's, but no deals (unless you know someone that works there).

i like grand slam bar inside the grand hyatt (metro center) before big games in DC. (of course greene turtle too)

That's probably the best way I've heard it put and you're dead on. I like where I work for sure, but yeah, "no vibe" is the truth.

I'd also like to nominate Dan's Cafe as one of my favorite bars.

    Haha Dans!

Holy shit you can get f'd up in that place. A bourbon and ginger is literally a glass of bourbon filled up 2/3 with Beam, and then a little mini of canada dry. Mix that shit yourself.

  • Churchkey, Atomic Billiards, The Black Squirrel basement bar.

also what is everyone's favorite sports bar in dc area?

ventnors, scottie the owner is the man, he used to plug his computer into the tv when terps were only on espn3. food is really good too.

A "Set up" is pretty much the greatest thing ever. Go in there, ask for a set up of rum and coke. For like $13 you get:

    1 pint of rum
    1 can of Coke
    1 bucket of ice
    4 small glasses

Heaven on earth, I tell ya.

that place is awesome. when the caps were in the playoffs in 11, i was there watching the nats game (marquis almost had a no-hitter against lincecum and the giants) and nobody gave us shit about watching the nats (even though my buddies were watching caps).

the people there are so nice, the food is awesome and the beer selection is great (pitchers of miller lite, they have the dc brau beer)

i don't go to adam's morgan as much as i used to when i was in my younger part of 20s, but i could see myself going there a lot more often.

That's where I first hooked up with my wife after leaving one of the douchiest spots, Bar Rouge.

That's an amazing coincidence, to hook up with some chick at a bar and find out she's your wife.

lol, that guy's a complete tool. I made the mistake of trying to help him out with some of the Syracuse alumni association people I know and they told me to forget it, he's persona non grata.

I told him he was basically blackballed in the SUAA and local alumni groups in favor of such stellar spots as SOTW and Madhatter because he would never offer specials for events or watches, and that they didn't like the way he dealt with them. He told me to go fuck myself and kicked me out of his bar.

When I tell that story to people I've met in the area, they are all like 'yup.' While the bar might not be douchey, the guy is king douche.

LOL. That's where I met my wife, too. The dank feel of the bar must be an aphrodisiac.

    Good spot.

I'm dating myself here (UMD '04) but when I first graduated it was like the entire barstaff at Bentleys just moved south. Real good bar.

Let me date myself then and make you feel better ('80). The Bottom Line was good in the late 70's and early 80's, too. I was afraid it had closed. Twigga, their bartenders were great back then, too. Never had a bad time there.

dang, thats too bad, my friend used to go in there every day. he has always accommodated me and my friends above and beyond, but then again that tends to be a trend when you go as a group on saturday afternoon to an empty bar and spend a few hundred dollars.

I believe that happens at Trusty's too, although the details of which are quite hazy.
