TV Upfronts 2012

  • That sucks, those four shows will siphon viewers away from each other. Agree with whoever said it'd be nice to see the ABC shows get to keep following Modern Family, ABC must have a new pet they're sticking in that slot.

I'm not sure Happy Endings/Apt 23 can surivive in those timeslots which is a shame. The Neighbors gets the cushy post-MF slot. Nashville is getting a lot of buzz and I predict we will have it shoved down our throats in the late summer/early fall promo period. The Last Resort (Shawn Ryan) looks ambitious and could be tough to get an audience going without a lead-in. I'm interested to see the previews when they come out later this afternoon.

  • Well, so far as lead-ins go (not really sure that matters anymore), Happy Endings/Apt 23 will follow Dancing with the Stars (highly rated), the Fox comedies will follow Raising Hope (low rated) and a new comedy called Ben and Kate.

So ABC definitely wins the lead-in battle.

  • The importance of comedy was underlined by NBC executives’ efforts to shore up “The Office,” a mainstay of its Thursday sitcom block. After protracted negotiations, “The Office” will return with most of its cast intact for what may be one last season, and its creator, Greg Daniels, will be back at work, too.

Mr. Daniels, the original supervisor for “The Office,” is expected to return in a hands-on capacity, Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in an interview. (Paul Lieberstein left that role at the end of last season.)

  • Tobey really sucked as a show runner but I liked where they left things at the end of this season and I think it could have set up a pretty solid fareware year. Especially with Daniels back on board.

    WheresWallace

  • So I wonder if part of Greg Daniels agreement to come back to The Office for one last dance was that NBC had to pick up P&R for the full 22 episode order and schedule it behind The Office for the entire season.

Initial reports were that P&R was only getting 13, like 30 Rock, Community, etc.

  • CBS's Fall Schedule: http://www.hitfix.com/articles/cbs-sets-its-2012-13-fall-schedule

I don't watch any of these shows but in case anyone else does -- Two and a Half Men to Thursday at 8:30 and The Mentalist to Sunday's at 10. The only pilot that looks interesting (to me) is Vegas -- period drama starring Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis.

The only thing I see listed for those two in 2012 is the following. IMDB says its a movie but the linked article says that it's a pilot set in the 1960's. Looks promising although I don't really like Jason O'Mara and thought both Life on Mars and Terra Nova would have been much better with a different lead. He just seems like the kind of actor that the networks really, really WANT to be a star but the public just doesn't connect with him on that level.

Untitled Ralph Lamb Project (TV 2012) - IMDb

Directed by James Mangold. With Dennis Quaid, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jason OMara, Michael Chiklis. A former rodeo cowboy becomes a sheriff.

  • CBS definitely keeps going to the well once they determine a certain actor should be "a TV star." The lead guys from the Mentalist and Hawaii 5-0 both had multiple failed shows before their current ones finally stuck.

    This wouldn't surprise me.

Daniels has always said that he has had the final episodes of the series plotted pretty much from the beginning. With him returning to the show, hopefully they can go out on a high note.

That's really the main reason I've been hanging on. I know they can put together some great episodes when they need to, so I know The Office will finish strong and I want to stick with it for that. But if it keeps getting renewed and putting off the end I might have to check out.

  • If this show was on any other network I would say that it has a 25% chance of survival but they could get some traction on CBS.

This will be the first CBS show I've even given a chance since Jericho. I've wanted to watch The Good Wife but it keeps falling down my queue of tv shows to catch up on.

  • Pop-Pop and Boom! Dan Harmon will not be returning as showrunner of NBC's Community, and whether he'll remain involved at all with the series he created at remains very much in doubt. Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series with Universal Television, has closed a deal with Happy Endings writers David Guarascio and Moses Port to join Community as showrunners and exec producers.

    ----------

Vulture hears that now that Sony made its deal with Guarascio and Port, it plans to ask Harmon to remain involved as a writer and consultant -- but not as the person in charge of the show. (He's expected to remain a "consulting producer" no matter what). Given Sony's decision to make a deal for Harmon's replacement without telling Harmon directly, it seems a longshot that Harmon will agree to a diminished role.

  • Saw that, posted it in the Thursday night thread.

This won't work out well. Oh well, 3 good years

    bkmalik

  • Whatever Harmon's reputation, in multiple conversations with Vulture, people associated with the show-- even some who've had issues with his management style -- have repeatedly called him the creative soul of the series, much as Aaron Sorkin was the beating heart of The West Wing. (Sorkin, of course, exited that show three years before its cancellation).

Probably a decent analogy for what will likely happen here. WW was still watchable the last few seasons, but felt watered down and not nearly the same quality as the Sorkin years.

Tyler Labine is someone I really want to see on a good show. He's fantastic.

  • Dan Sterling and Brent Forrester are moving into NBC's The Office. The duo has boarded the Thursday night comedy as executive producers for the show's upcoming ninth season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

    ----------

Both previously worked with Office creator Greg Daniels on Fox's animated comedy King of the Hill. A decision on who will serve as showrunner has yet to be determined.

  • Ken Levine, who has worked on shows like MASH, Simpsons, Cheers, Everybody Loves Raymond (as well as being a play-by-play guy for the O's in 1991) weighs in on Harmon-gate.

For a network to fire a showrunner, his behavior had to be pretty unruly. The network weighs the value of his contribution with the nightmare of dealing with him and must decide if he’s worth it. Dan Harmon apparently wasn’t worth it.

    --------------

From what I’ve heard second-hand, Dan Harmon was very erratic. There are horror stories of 24-hour writing sessions. A number of writers have supposedly run screaming from the show. So if these stories are true (and I have no proof that they are), it’s not just NBC that has problems dealing with him.

The Chevy Chase incident. Forget who said what to whom and who was an asshole and who was a bigger asshole – the fracas never should have gone public. And it was Harmon who spilled the beans by airing his dirty laundry during a stand-up routine. Networks frown on this.

    ---------------

And finally, I worry that Dan going public with this will ultimately hurt him. Other networks might put him in the “too much trouble” bin. He’s a talented guy but he’s yet to create FRIENDS. And I wonder, is this worth it? Besides getting all this stuff off his chest, what is the upside of going worldwide with this feud? Yes, your fanboys rally around you and you’re a media martyr, but they’re not the people who can say “yes” to your next project. They can’t make the decisions that will shape your career.

Ultimately, I wish Dan Harmon well. I hope I’m wrong. I hope two networks are lining up to get his next project. And I’m very sorry he got fired, if for no other reason than it must make Chevy Chase really happy. That really pisses me off.
