Suque, Tell Me About Spain

  • The wife and I want to go on vacation in April or May, and are thinking that Spain sounds nice. She'll be about 4-5 months pregnant, so we won't want to do a ton of walking, and I'll be the only one drinking. What should we do? Where should we stay?

  • I'm thinking of doing a Granada, Cordoba, Malaga, Costa del Sol kinda swing this year, so any info about that would be helpful for me.

    PaulUMD

  • I did Madrid and Barcelona 2 years ago in May. It was hot.

We did a lot of walking around and drinking though, so I'm not the help you're looking for. Should still have a great time though.

  • check out a small fishing town called Nerja on Costa Del Sol. Granada is awesome. Sevilla is ungodly good. That whole area is awesome. Make sure you eat plenty of Jamon Iberico (not just serano).

  • If you like food, I hear San Sebastian is pretty much the greatest place on earth. I myself have never been, though. Yet.

Don't talk about my moms, yo.

I did this about 10 years ago. it was a great trip. Lots of great architecture if your into that sort of thing. Not a ton of nitelife until you get to costa del Sol, Which has a few nice Discotecs. I wouldn't go until late may or later. The town is dead before then and actually kind of cold. I was very disappointed as a 17 year old that the topless beach was not packed with european hotties for me to oggle.

Alhambra is a must see in Granada. Also you should be able to find your way to a gypsy cave for flaminco dancing and dinner. Its a definite interesting experience.

Cordoba is an interesting town as well. It has like a 1000 year old sword factory or something.

Great food all over. Big fan of the spanish tortilla sandwhich for breakfast on the go. Costa del sol actually has some really great pizza places brick oven with italians running the joint. Had some great Paella here as well. Another thing to try if you can find it I only saw it in madrid were Boccarones fritas basically it was a french fry bag of fried sardines, I hate sardines but destroyed a bag of these.

To the original poster, Alot of walking almost throughout the country unless you go to barcelona or Madrid. Cabs in Madrid are INSANE i'd suggest Barcelona over Madrid in your scenario.

    Pic Sigs are for losers.

  • We went to Torremolinos and Malaga on our honeymoon. It was great.

  • i can't imagine how a trip to spain is possible without a lot of walking.

one of two countries i've visited that i'd be willing to move to.

Phatboy if you had any balls I'd meet you at the AFA Boxing gym and have Coach Weichers put some gloves on us.

  • I was born in Spain and lived there for two years, but I don't remember too much.

Madrid is a fun city. Look out for the beach towns. Some can be awesome (Xavia is my favorite) and some can be a bit trashy and filled with ugly brits.

For the full spanish experience, madrid>>>>>>barcelona. For tourism bacelona has a bit more stuff.

  • Bumping this thread because the wife and I are thinking about doing about 7 or 8 nights in Barcelona the first week of April. We were originally thinking of doing Barcelona & Nice but it seems to be pretty difficult getting between the two cities. Is 7/8 nights in Barcelona "too much?" We did London, Paris, Venice, Florence & Rome for 15 nights two years ago and had a great time. The longest we spent in a city is 4 nights in London but we felt like we could have spent longer there without being even close to bored. Is Barcelona the same though, as in can we easily keep ourselves busy exploring different neighborhoods, eating good food, drinking and seeing the tourist attractions for a full week? We are both mid/late 20's and like partying so we hear Barcelona is good for that. Any suggested day trips from Barcelona?

Also, I'd like to catch a football (soccer) game and it looks like there are two teams in Barcelona..FC Barcelona and RCD Espaynol. Obviously FC Barca is the well known team but I'm sure the tickets are crazy expensive. I'd just like to go for the atmosphere. Anyone ever been to an Espaynol game?? Much thanks in advance!!

  • I didn't realize this thread had been bumped. So, I thought the OP was posting that in April/May 2012, his wife will be 4-5 months pregnant. I was all ready to applaud his confidence.

  • i've seen espanyol, but at the time they were still playing at montjuic. they have a pretty kickass new place now outside of town.

Barcelona is a great city. I spent 4 nights there as part of a Europe tour. 4 days was more than enough time to see everything we wanted. The Sagrada Familia is a pretty cool site and the La Rambla is a cool place to watch street entertainment and there is nothing wrong with topless Spanish chicks on the beach. I'd definitely recommend you try hittng up another city if you have 7 or 8 nights. Based on the cities you've already been too I'd suggest maybe trying Munich for a drunken bike tour. Or perhaps you can spend a few days in barcelona and then find a cruise out of Barcelona to a few other nearby cities. Barcelona is a popular origin for cruises in Europe.

  • Thinking of doing a western Europe trip in the spring. What cities can I not miss? Should have a couple weeks. How is getting around Europe by train? How easy is it to get tickets to soccer games in various countries? Where all is weed legal? Why is the Netherlands trying being uncool and not sell weed to tourists? I'm single, how are European women, bar scene, etc.? General Europe stuff, I've never been. Thanks in advance for any help.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

Have you ever been to Europe before?

If not, what kinds of things do you want to see in cities? London is a good place to start if you've never been to Europe before. They speak your language and have more cultural similarities to Americans than the rest of Europe. I love Edinburgh, though it's obviously not one of the cities on a standard "cities of Europe" tour. I love Paris as well, but speak French really well and haven't had the snobbery problems that some of my friends have complained about. I liked Barcelona more than Madrid. Rome is great as well, particularly if you're into history. Prague and Krakow are both great too, but aren't western Europe.

I'd probably pick a couple of big cities for a few days each, and then work a couple of smaller cities in there as well. Europe is insanely easy to get around by train, though it's not as cheap as it used to be. Tickets to soccer games depend entirely on which team and how important the game is. If you try to see Arsenal play Tottenham in London, you're going to have some trouble. If you try to see West Ham play Ipswich Town, it's a lot easier. Tickets are really easy to get in Italy as many have huge stadiums. If you have money to spend, you should be able to find anything you want pretty reasonably. European women are awesome, and you'd be able to find anything you want bar/club-wise in any big city over there. If you stay at hostels, you'll have no trouble meeting people. Can't help with the weed stuff.

  • If you're 25 or under - Prague, Krakow, Budapest and Belgrade >>>>>>>>>>>>> Paris, London, Rome

Do the big western cities when you're older with more money. Do the central and eastern european cities when you're young and just want to party your balls off.

    vadimivich

  • Oh, and getting tickets for all but the biggest derby matches is very easy. Very few european matches are true sellouts - I've even bought Champions League tickets in several cities just by walking up to the stadium the day of the game.

    vadimivich

  • If you go to an Espanyol match, you can endear yourself to native fans by starting up their famous chant. It goes, "Yo soy ESPANYOL, ESPANYOL, ESPANYOL."

    aschaefe

  • I would go to Barcelona over Espanyol for a match in a heartbeat. I hate Barcelona, but you can't pass up being in that stadium and seeing Messi play. My sister went to a game and easily got tickets. I can find the website for you if you want, but essentially she bought them here and picked up them in the store over in Barcelona.

As for you Omar, if you're visiting Euorpe you want to look at a EURail pass. Depending on your age, you can probably get a cheap one and just bum around Europe for a month or so. I did a trip from Italy->Switzerland->France->England for REALLY cheap.

Soccer tickets in England = harder to come by, especially if Manchester United/City, Chelsea, or Arsenal are involved and they are playing away from their home stadia. Although, it's really not THAT hard to get tickets. Most other countries are really easy to get tickets for games.

Before I recommend countries, how old are you? Do you want to party? Do you want to sitesee? Need that info before making recommendations.

I LOVED Barcelona...one of my favorite cities. Barceloneta & Barri Gotic are fantastic.

    LeafeeWolf

  • Summer 2010 did Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla, and a small town on Costa Del Sol called Estepona. All were amazing, and I'd go back to every one except Sevilla. Not that it was bad, I just think there's not much more to see there.

    I definitely agree with this.

I had much more fun in Eastern Europe than Western Europe, though I loved both. (28yrs old I am)

I did Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Czech Republic last summer and it was fantastic.

I do want to go to Krakow and Belgrade next trip.

  • French Riviera is awesome. Go to Nice, rent a car (you don't have to though because they this bus service that takes you to most of the cities/towns in the Riviera for like 1 euro), and travel around southern France. We went to Eze and hiked, Menton and chilled at the beach, Monaco (the people there are filthy rich), and we crossed the border to Italy and checked out Ventimiglia which was really nice.

We didnt do this but you can head in the other direction from Nice and check out Cannes and Marseilles.

Nice itself is really nice. Lots to see.

The only problem about this is that French people are a bit douchey compared to the English or Italians.
