Summer Running Thread

  • Hurt my LCL training for the Frederick half marathon and ran anyway. Really stupid decision, but finally able to run again today. Just a mile at an okay pace (8:30, scared to push it). I want to run the Bmore of VA Beach half, but can't sign up until I see if my knee cooperates.

I never ran until January and it is crazy how addicting it is.

  • ran a 10k yesterday in the columbia triathlon. did well in the swim, but got killed in the bike. brutal hills that i wasn't prepared for. i had nothing left for the 10k run, which had more brutal hills. my pace was 12:46 in the run (in the rockville pikes peek 10k a few weeks ago i ran a 9:30 pace).
awesome race though, now i know next yr to train on hills.

  • yeah, those hills around Centennial lake are pretty brutal. Im guessing thats where the run was? I think you go over the big one, up a small one, then back over the big one? I do that run every weekend at least once.

I made a point to avoid the lake Sunday (my normal run day there) because it gets so crowded. I dont know how people swim in that lake. After June, it starts smelling and my poor dog doesnt get to swim anymore.

  • yah there were a few hills around centennial lake, the worst hills though were in the neighborhoods around carillon dr and century dr. i walked up all of them. i'm plagued with leg cramping (quads, calves). i do everything- load up on carbs, electrolytes, etc. but as soon as i hit the 3hr mark, i keep getting cramps in my legs. never fails.

as for the lake, they actually almost cancelled the swim portion due to elevated levels of bacteria since it had been raining throughout most of the week. but the sunday levels were within normal limits and the swim was a go.

  • Anyone have any good interval workouts?

In the past I've done 1 mi, rest 3min, .75 mi, rest 2min, .5 mi, rest 1min, .25 mi. All full speed.

Someone give me a list of trails I can run in close proximity to College Park, I'm a regular at Greenbelt State Park which has an awesome 5-6 mile loop but I need more. Are there technical trails in Rock Creek Park? I have only run on the paved paths but I'm not looking for pavement I need dirt, hills and tree roots. I've always been told Gunpowder falls is beautiful but I think that's too far for a regular running spot. Patapsco seems doable but still only as a weekend run.

I have about a 5 1/2 mile loop in Rock Creek that I do a few times a week. Almost all trails and has good elevation changes. I duck into the park at CT. & Calvert in Woodley Park and pick up the trail not far down the hill. Head up into Dumbarton Oaks, come out and cross over Wisconsin and pick up the Whitehaven trail. Take that up through Glover Park, down through the back of Glover Park in the woods and come up just near Foxhall and loop back into the woods and double back all the way to CT. & Calvert. There are lots of off-shoots that you can make a lot of the outbound and inbound different by taking different routes.

Just signed up for the Odyssey 24 hour Adventure Race. We have a 4-man team. Did the Rocky Gap AR last fall and the Greenhorn Sprint this Spring. This one should be fun with night running.

This link shows the trails I'm talking about...

  • National Running Day!

Everyone get out there and run...around 8p when the humidity is low.

  • I finally attempted to transition from 15 miles a week on a elyptical (with decent resistance) to running outside on pavement. Not good. The first day I ran 5 miles and was really sore (knees were fine). The second run, also about 5 miles- a week later, my knees felt like they were giving out (ligament issues).

Not sure what to do. I wasn't that tired after the 5 mile runs, but I was really sore and knees banged up (I am 6' 4"). Any suggestions?

Take it slow. Start with 2 miles and work your way up from there slowly. If you hurt anywhere, dont run as it'll make things worse.

  • Also reevaluate your form, having something like a really pronounced heel strike can be really detrimental to your knees. Changing your form may be difficult for really experienced runners but for the < 30 mile a week crowd you shouldn't have too many issues. Maybe others can chime in who are more experienced but a slightly overpronated mid heel strike I think is ideal. I'll try and link some articles when I have some time.

  • +1 on shorter runs at first. You went from zero to lots of impact.

Regarding footstrike... Doesn't matter if it's heel, mid or fore. Watch the Kenyans and you'll see all three. The one thing they all have in common is their feet land underneath their bodies, not in front. Velvet's heel reference is really about overstriding. It is more common with heel strikers. Easiest way to fix it is to increase turnover. Another way is to lose the shoes for short stretches. I'm talking a couple hundred yards at first. It's nearly impossible to overstride barefoot.

Edited to add... And, if you've never been fitted for running shoes, try it. I'm talking a real running store where they watch you run on a treadmill. Something like PRR, Fleet, Pacers, etc. BTW I am also 6'4"...and skinny from what most think is too much running...

  • Also go to a dedicated running store (Roadrunner Sports, Charm City Run, Falls Road Running Store, etc.) and get fitted for top quality shoes. Do not skimp on shoes or inserts if you need them.

When you buy running shoes you should know if you over pronate or under pronate and you should know which of these catergory of shoes is for you: stability, stability plus, neutral, neutral plus, motion control, motion control plus. If you don't know then you are basically hoping to make a lucky guess when trying to buy the correct shoe. There is nothing more important in running than having the correct shoes on your feet. The cost is worth it.

Reiterating what was already mentioned, the one of the biggest causes of injury in running is doing to much, too soon. A sure fire way to get patella or achilles tendonitis, shin splints or metatarsalgia. This is why people start training for half marathons and such months in advance. You slowly and gradually add on the distance in a planned way.

  • I bought my shoes and inserts at Roadrunner. There is a 90 day return policy for the shoes and inserts. I am not sure how they do business.

Thanks for the tips. Next time I run, I'll start with 2 miles, not 5 miles. I'll add 10% distance each week.

  • I'd also recommend trying to stay off of pavement for a week or two. If possible, I'd try to find a field or use the infield of a track.

  • Anyone get any running in during this awful, awful heat? Suffering through summer races?

I have a couple short races coming up - the JPM Corporate Challenge 5K with people at work and a 5 miler on fathers day - building back up slowly to my second half in August. The heat in NYC has been brutal.

The Baltimore 10-miler is on the 18th. Getting my training runs in has been tough. Hopefully it won't be this hot on the 18th because the 10-miler is repped to be brutally hilly. I want to get to the NCR trail early tomorrow or Sunday so I can put 9 or 10 miles in.

  • Just got some great news: accepted into the NB test program again!

New shoes for free for a couple of months!

For those who don't know about these things (other shoe companies have them, but I've never been selected), it's worth signing up. All you've got to do is fill out a few evaluation forms. Terrific deal.

  • I've been pretty frustrated with my running program of late. I think I might have a sports hernia. I've had the problem for the past two months, but tried to run/work out through it. I eventually took about two weeks off to try and rest it, and since then I've been trying to run every third or fourth day. I usually get about 3 miles or so into the run and start feeling it. I have a doctor's appointment coming up to try and figure out what's wrong, but I want to avoid surgery if at all possible.

  • Anyone run with the Saucony KInvara's? Ive hyper extended my knee over the past few months and looking for a shoe that has less heel support to help shorten stride, strike below my hips...increase turnover.

If so, how gradual do you have to go into them?

Anyone run the Portugal NYRR run in Central Park today? Humidity was brutal, but a nice run.

I ran it - great tech shirt, best one NYRR has given since I've been running their races. i'm now 7 races into my 9+1 for entry into next year's marathon. You running any others this summer? I'm doing the Cystic Fibrosis 10K and the Bronx Half in august.

i have a pair of the new kinvara 2's. I like them, although the soles have a bit of a spongy/squishy quality to them. I use them for much of my speedwork and shorter midweek runs. I don't think there would be that much of a "learning process" with them for your feet. They are super light (~7.7oz), and i was surprised how much cushion they have to them. I figured it would feel like i'm running barefoot, but it doesnt at all.

    robterp

  • Rob (or any other Baltimore area Terps), did you run the Baltimore 10 this past weekend? I did...third time running it and I always forget how hilly the end is. It's a nice race but it will never be a PR race for me.

    Terrapin23

  • I did not run, infact I can't run due to some embedded glass in my foot that I need to have removedgrumble. But what time do most of you guys run? I try to do it in the morning to wake me up and give me that energy boost.
