Speed Cameras

  • A good editorial worth sharing.

Like I argued on the old board these cameras malfunction every day. Speed cameras don't work for anything other than making a lot of money.

There have been numerous reports to show they malfunction a lot, faulty tickets being issued, tens of thousands of tickets thrown out a year by the companies for being incorrect (who knows how many slip through the cracks), increased accidents (and in some places increased deadly accidents), speed limits below the 85th percentile benchmark, speed limits dropped just for cameras, etc....

Brentwood is a great example where the SHA came in and created a new school zone with a lower speed limit. The new limit was below the federal guidelines and then the SHA told the city they could put a speed camera there and told a company that operates them about it also....

EDITORIAL: O'Malley's blackmail cameras - Washington Times

Gov. Martin O'Malley last year signed legislation allowing Maryland localities to set up speed cameras in school zones because, he claimed, that would make the streets safer. Now that several of these municipal photo-enforcement systems are up and running, it's hard to argue with a straight face that they are anything other than a naked grab for cash.

  • This is the Brentwood story I was talking about...talk about some corruption with the SHA working with the company

  • Has Erlich been harping on this at all? Could be a nice weapon for him to gain some ground on O'Incompetent.

  • I hate those damn things, paid several tickets. Also hate how those "in the know" slow down to 25 when they approach them, causing more harm than if they had simply been speeding. But there is no denying that they have lowered speeds and made for safer roads around Mo Co. I know I drive a lot slower on most of the roads that have known cameras.

  • what pisses me off is that these thing have no idea if I was driving. My ex girlfriend driving my car got 2 of these on 95 one going toward whitemarsh then one coming back. I obviously had to pay both.

(before someone posts it yea i know i should never have let her drive my car)

    Pic Sigs are for losers.

  • I grew up in Brentwood on34th st. They don't have a single school in brentwood and they have no police force. They use PG county. Mt ranier has a police force. Putting speed cameras on RI ave right there is getting people coming out of DC late at night I bet. Its a joke to have the speed limit there on a two lane(each way) divided road to be 25 mph.

it looks like there is a 4 teacher christian school for young children there

Well then i guess it makes sense to have it 25mph at 2 in the morning. Sucks because its a super poor area and people who get these are more than likely to be living close to the poverty level, or UMD students going into dc.

  • One on Conn Ave got me recently, late at night. Suddenly all the cars around slowed down and as I was in a serious funk for personal reasons, the camera flash was a surprise. Damn it. 42 in a 30 at 11pm at night. Oh and there are two cameras about a block apart on the same side of the road. They look like green square trashcans.

  • I heard on WTOP once those "upgraded" hidden green Conn ave boxes are the highest grossing cameras in the state, maybe the country. I wish I could find the statistics now, but I can't seem to find anything recent.

They just put more cameras further up Connecticut at Denfeld.

  • I got ~400 dollars in tickets on that brentwood speed camera...i went to work everyday for 2 years down that strip of rhode island. I had no idea I was getting tickets for a month - my first ticket was early june - didn't receive the notice until late july. 2 months of driving through that area everyday piling up tickets. The camera was set back away from the road and resembled a light post - didn't notice it until I started receiving the tickets.

  • Careful with those speed camera tickets. Read the fine print on them. Even though they are showing a picture of your car they might not be using the picture to get you for speeding. Some of the cameras have a radar setup that triggers the picture taking. They are defensible if you try to fight them. Just have to know what they are using for the picture. If the picture is accurate (if it gives a 2nd picture at a point of 10 meters for example, there might not be a reference point for the camera to actually get the exact 10 meters and with such small time between the shots the distance makes a huge difference.) The reason cities love these things is that the company installs everything on its own dime and then gets 40% or so from the ticket fines. The city has to do little work (a police officer has to sign off on the tickets.) and people are dumb and if they see a picture of there car it means they were caught and will pay the ticket without thinking otherwise.

have maryland residents challenged these? i love the DC speed cameras because they fill the coffers with a bunch of money from maryland drivers, who are all a bunch of assholes who don't even stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. but i have to think the speed cameras in maryland are targeting almost exclusively their own. i'd be surprised if they held up to public vote.

RDurr, I have 3 of these cameras within a mile of my home (in Maryland). One night I was driving home, speed limit was 35 and I was going like 33-34 and the first camera went off...then I hit the next again goes off. I fought the tickets and they overturned them (they told me those cameras were regularly malfunctioning).

I would never encourage anyone to do anything illegal, and I abhor the use of force. These types of cameras are probably very easy to blow up, shoot out, or even spraypaint the lenses. If such actions were taken on a regular basis, then perhaps city councils might think twice about reinstalling them.

That would be a terrible idea and i hope nobody ever takes such actions.

Yeah these have gotten me before, but they are really easy to see once you know they are there.

But Tent City Councils do not pay for instillation or maintenance on the cameras. The Camera company does that which is why city councils love these things so much.

  • How long did it take for you to get the ticket? I got caught by one in PG county like 4 weeks ago and haven't seen the ticket yet. I'm hoping I got lucky.

  • i got my first one june 3rd and didnt receive it until july 25th or so...i have no doubt i was going 8-11mph over which is what all of them have me doing, its just ridiculous that the speed limit is 25 on that stretch of road island and they nail you for going like 8 over. There were several days were I got nailed going to work and nailed going home FTL.

Wow that pretty damning evidence of foul play. It sucks though because nothing will ever be done about it.

I just got a speeding ticket in the mail the other day. 68 on 695. I remember getting it because me and my buddy saw the camera going off like a strobe light. Literally everybody in all four lanes were just flowing at the same speed.

I think I was caught by this one today. How the hell do you put speed cameras on 695?
