I wouldn't be surprised a bit if the political angle of this fly-around-DC decision turned out to be immense. Brilliant idea, judging by the immense amount of buzz it has received.

Attached is a petition to double NASA's budget to a full 1% of GDP, for those who are interested. This would be a good time to sign it.

Personally, I think there's a major question about what kind of manned space travel makes sense going forward given our present state of technology. But certainly there's a ton of opportunity for further work in the vicinity of Earth provided that it can get funded, and for development of next-gen system tech, which is exactly what NASA's famous luminary commission suggested and Obama pushed for.

NASA's work pushing the scientific, unmanned, and automated angles of space exploration (aka the real future of cost-effective space exploration, near- to mid-term) is immensely important. Manned missions are like NASA's expensive marketing wing, but we can't afford to let NASA fall behind -- or we'll have either fully given up on space or pushed it all behind the classified Air Force curtain.

Because the secretary of transportation realizes our space program is a waste of money.

I'm a libertarian that supports government-funded space exploration. If we just eliminate Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, we'll have plenty of money to fund missions to Mars.
