Sequestration, debt, and tax cuts

  • Now that the election is behind us and we are exactly where we were before election day, its time to focus on the challenges ahead. The debt absolutely needs to be addressed and for the sake of the country I hope both sides work together to put together a plan that actually starts reducing the deficit. Here are some questions I'd like answered.

Is Obama going to put together a credible budget that will entice some moderate republicans to cross party lines?

Will the bush tax cuts expire?

    Will sequestration go into effect?

Will the US credit get downgraded once more over the next 4 years?

Will fed employees see a raise? (this important to some on this board)

  • Reid moves to limit GOP filibusters - Washington Times

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that he will try to push through a change to Senate rules that would limit the GOPs ability to filibuster bills.

  • It amazes me that more people aren't freaking out over sequestration. If it goes into effect, the fallout is going to be unreal, especially in this area. As someone who works directly with government contractors across the defense and healthcare sectors, I am terrified. My job will inevitably be gone, along with millions of others. It's the single largest issue looming over my professional life right now and I'm not very hopeful with where we stand.

How it wasn't a hot-button election issue is beyond me.

    HEY you suck

  • 100% for sequestration. The federal government is the only entity that doesn't have to abide by its operating budget. And I think Boehner and Co put a line in the sand on this

Yep. Unfortunately there was pain to be taken in 2008 that was kicked down the road. Not only that, but the problem was exacerbated throwing another $6 trillion at it. Gotta pay the piper at some point. The longer we put it off, the tougher it will be.

  • I hate the idea of sequestration, but like the execution here. If this has to be the first big salvo fired against our debt, so be it...it's early enough in the political cycle anyway.

    You guys are insane.

I'm obviously biased, since this issue effects me directly- but I can't see how ANYONE thinks this "needs to happen". It was proposed as a way to force a resolution that never came to fruition. The BCA was ridiculous to begin with- basically a bluff that got called. I don't think you understand how screwed EVERYONE will be if this goes into effect- not just assholes like me who make a living off government spending. Defense budget will be raped, social programs destroyed, health care initiatives striped... trillions of dollars cut off. This sounds all well-and-good in theory, but those trillions of dollars keep millions of people employed (many of them in this area). You're damned if you do, even more damned if you don't. Sequestration can't happen.

There is no easy fix. Entitlement programs are going to have to take a hit, it's unavoidable. Taxes... I won't even go there right now. With all the other crap that expires on December 31st, 2012, I'll be sure to enjoy my last awesome New Years eve for awhile.

  • Meh, I'd rather endure a moderate recession now than a Europe like situation in 5 years.

Regardless, they won't let it happen, so no need to freak out.

  • go for it.

our military budget has to be THAT much bigger than just a few years ago? I don't buy it. CUT CUT CUT.

So, what you're saying here is that government workers are going to have the same experience as those who work in the private sector have lived through for the past four years?

    Interesting.

  • The alternative is to come to some sort of debt reduction agreement before the end of the year, that specifically nullifies sequestration. I'm not sure Congress can do something that big before the holidays, but maybe they can.

Sequestration is going to suck, no doubt. But when you put those cuts together with the way Obamacare is going to change the tax/spend agenda in 2013 and beyond, IMO this is something worth pursuing rather than trying to wiggle our way out of tough decisions with these stopgap agreements.

I totally agree with how it's going to screw a lot of people and jobs...and I have no reason to think smart cuts will be made. I'd rather pull everything out of Europe than mess with the high-tech job sector supporting defense.

There really is no fix right now- but sequestration as a fix for our fiscal clusterfuck is like preaching sex for virginity. It makes no sense and is going to make a bad situation worse. People seem to be looking at it like it was implemented in the Budget Control Act to be a logical solution if we didn't get spending under control. THAT'S NOT WHY IT WAS PUT IN THAT ACT! It was classic and understandable fear mongering to force a solution. It just never happened. It's like telling your fat neighbor that if he doesn't lose 40 pounds by new years eve, you're going to shoot him in the face. Most people would use this as motivation to lose weight, but this particular person just couldn't stop eating. Are you really going to shoot him in the face?

I sincerely understand the logic of people who think this should happen- but you're wrong. Shit needs to change, yes, we need to fix frivolous overspending, we need to get shit back in order- but sequestration is NOT going to do that. It's going to cost the jobs of tens of millions of government contractors, sub contractors, and vendors. It's going to erase whatever tiny progress our recovery allowed. It's going to make the original bailouts worthless and put us in worse shape than before they happened.

And that was the point of sequestration. It was an "LOL... we'll fix shit before then, yo" type of deal. It just never happened. If you're FOR "lets burn it to the ground and rebuild", sequestration is for you. I just hope you're ready for the shitstorm that's going to come with it.

If this is directed at me, please show me where I ever endorsed Romney or said he's going to (or should) win the election.

I could not give less of a f*ck who won the election, but sequestration is a MAJOR issue facing every American citizen- and whether it goes into effect or is avoided- will have a tremendous impact on EVERYONE.

I've stayed out of every political debate on this site and otherwise... but when it comes to sequestration, I just can't do it. The public (in general) just doesn't seem to understand WHY it was put in the BCA and how it will erase every bit of progress we've made since.

Some men just want to see the world burn.

  • Maybe this will help you relax.

Quickly pivoting the political conversation from President Obama’s reelection to Washington’s looming budget battles, House Speaker John A. Boehner on Wednesday offered a potential path to compromise, saying Republicans are “willing to accept new revenue” to tame the soaring national debt and avert an ugly battle over the approaching “fiscal cliff.”

  • It's obvious that the folks that aren't in the govt sector - like the NY crew - don't give a rats ass as it doesn't affect them.

Newsflash. this isn't like what's been going on in the private sector - they aren't firing shitty performers or trimming costs, they are axing entire departments and putting hundreds of companies out of business, immediately. Regardless of how good they are, how important their project is, etc.

We're still in a precarious economic state - I honestly can't fathom how anyone thinks the way to fix that is to literally lay off a shit ton of people - do they know how many people would be laid off? Are we talking 100k or more?

    Joesmith32

  • Whatever they do it should be big, so it doesn't suck up the entire legislative bandwidth for the next couple years. Taxes, entitlements, debt ceiling, the whole shebang. Just get it done, even if they kick the sequester/Bush tax cuts an extra month or two down the road. It will be better to deal with it now.

So we should just do it again? On a much larger and more prolific scale?

Just axe entire companies "because the private sector went through it, too"?

Wake up, bro. I technically work in the private sector, servicing the public sector. My company would eventually go under with sequestration. If we make this an "eye for an eye" debate, no one will win. This was never the point of the BCA, nor should it have been. If we just want everyone to suffer and "know what its like"... lets do it. See you in the soup lines, bro.
