Say goodbye to public schools, Philadelphia

  • This is totally insane.

Philadelphia School District announces its dissolution | Philadelphia City Paper | 04/24/2012

Philadelphia public schools are on the operating table, reeling from a knockout blow of heavy state budget cuts. So the District is today announcing that it's going to call it quits. Its organs will be harvested, in search of a relatively vital host.

"The drummer for Maryland's pep band just freaked out: 'They're trying to slow the game down,' he screamed. 'Get up on them, get up on them.

  • Education is such a mess.

I had higher hopes for this presidency regarding it too. I mean, the states are a mess, but they could really lead on this issue. Especially considering Biden's wife is a teacher.

  • Privatization of education is a pipe dream of mine. Good to see the City of Liberty leading the way.

  • They probably will perform better under that stress than by wasting money on unions. Unions are the worst thing to ever happen.

  • Pennsylvania state government truly seems to hate the people who live in its major cities. I didn't realize this until I moved here. It's so backwards and idiotic, especially in comparison with states that actually value the idea of maintaining their economic centers. As if Philadelphia didn't already have enough problems keeping itself afloat.

But nobody ever accused Pennsylvania of being a particularly intelligent state...

Philadelphia has been corrupt and mismanaged for many years, but there is no excuse for the lack of support from Harrisburg. Those in power including the Governor are from Eastern Pa. I don't get it either, but these fools haven't even figured out how to tax all the gas being pumped from the Marsallis Shale (sp?).

I read the article, and who knows maybe privatizing will work. At least it may prove to be a noble experiment. I don't think i'd want my kids going to school in that school system though.

  • In theory I am against government run education and dissolving the department of education sounds like a good thing --I have trouble grasping the logistics of such an operation though. This might be a observation to see how it does or does not work.

You could the money to the kids rather than to the schools...so if you live in a town with a few schools within driving distance, you could select which one you wanted rather than the one you have to send your kids to. In theory, it creates competition for good teachers and facilities and those schools get rewarded. It would also allow schools to become more specialized.

Obviously, there are loopholes but it will be interesting to see how this goes.

This is a retarded thing to say. Unions served a purpose in preventing abuse of the workers by management. The problem arises when the union leadership is corrupt, incompetent, or both, and then ends up screwing its own members more than management could ever be able to do or hope to do. Or, the union makes demands to the point that it runs the manufacturer out of business (see: General Motors) and then everybody's fucked.

I want to add that I am not pro-union in any way, but blanket statements like this are idiotic.

That rationale doesn't apply to public unions, where "management" is the government and there's no built-in check on union demands like the company going out of business.

and the public unions work and spend boat loads of union money to elect those they will be negotiating with

You're against public funding of education? Don't want to trail off the deep end, but I'm not sure what makes one wealth bracket more deserving of an education over another. It's bad enough that private universities are +$40,000 and that the standard for public universities in some states is considerably lower than in others. In general, I don't see the fairness in one person/family being deterred from getting/making sure their child gets a quality education.

There's a difference between government FUNDED education and government RUN education. You can have the former without the latter (e.g. Vouchers).

  • I lean right on many issues, but this is nuts. It is in each municipalities best interest to educate its youth to deal with the problems of tomorrow. I think its shortsighted to abandon existing infrastructure n favor of some sort of hodgepodge of charter schools. This wont end well

Or student loans/grants, which apparently is the primary purpose and largest expenditure of the federal department of education?

I am in favor of the government funding a privatized reading comprehension class for you
