This is something on my bucket list and I'm thinking about doing this within the next year or two. From Atlanta to Punta Arenas is 7,000 miles (rough estimate) so I'm thinking a month should be plenty of time to do it.
I know there are some routes that impassable (The Darian Gap that seperates Panama from Columbia being the first) and that it will put a beating on my car, so I'm thinking about buying a cheap 4WD and selling it (or giving it to a deserving person) once I arrive in Southern Chile.
I've been using this site and it has a lot of great info

Suque, help me plan this trip!
How much money would you set aside for a trip like this, what route would you take, and where would you stop along the way?

I speak Mexican, so it's cool. But yeah, crossing through Northern Mexico is definitely the biggest detractor of the trip...even though it's cheating, should I just start in Costa Rica?
What kind of car should I get, and old Land Rover? Old Jeep? or something super cheap like a Suzuki Sidekick

LOL at driving some old ass 4x4 on this trip. I hope you know how to work on cars, or you will be price gouged as a gringo. I also hope you bring replacement parts because it's not easy to get stuff in some of those countries. I also hope you speak fluent spanish.
Also dont plan on driving at night, leaving anything of value in your car, or spending the night on the side of the road. Whatever driving time google tells you, multiply it by 3 and that is probably an accurate reflection of how long it will take to do this trip.
There are some very strict rules about border crossings and you will need to get all your visa's sorted out before departing. You know you cant drive into half the countries without a visa right?
