RIP AIM

  • I remember when AIM came out - I was in 7th or 8th grade, I literally couldn't comprehend the idea that two people were using computers to talk to each other. Just blew my mind.

I also like to think of myself as a bit of a revolutionary, because in high school, I started using my away messages to post movie quotes and stuff and never indicated where I was. God that frustrated and confused so many people. I was online every day in college but after I graduated in 05, that was like the beginning of the end -when cell phones could do more than call someone.

If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?

  • Is trying to hookup with girls through facebook chat acceptable in college now? or do the girls think its super creepy?

Just trying to compare it to Late night drunken Aim sessions.

and I killed it with my Jack Handey away messages. stupid hot chick from HS only had AOL and only part of the message showed up so she would just say "hey" to read the rest, getting my hopes up that she actually wanted to talk to me.

"One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to DisneyLand, but instead I drove him to an old burned-out warehouse. "Oh, no," I said, "DisneyLand burned down." He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real DisneyLand, but it was getting pretty late."

oh god, I used to have the same away messages.

My favorite was talking to a weird name instead of the real names shown on facebook. Flirting with LaLaLou was so much better than the very real alternative that we are forced with now.

  • Definitely remember trying to make sure no one in my house would shut the computer down to make sure my away message would be up if i was gone all weekend so I could read messages when I got back.

Late night drunk aim was something special. You'd get home at 2 or 3 and sign on, pretty much everyone on your buddy list also on, everyone just unapologetically hitting on each other. And just like a feeding frenzy, its over just as suddenly as it starts. You know youre too late when the lucky ones put up humblebrag away messages and the rest start going idle as they passed out without an away mrssage

  • Remember "warning" someone?

We found out that if 3 different people got 3 responses from the same person, they could simultaneously warn them up to 99%, which allowed the user to send an IM every 5 minutes or so and took forever to get back to normal. We used to troll the shit out of our one friend.

  • I would always put an alarm on the hot girls. I got a ring and a message telling me they signed on so I knew when I had to stop playing Yahoo Pool and spit some game.

Worst feeling in the world was definitely gathering the courage to write to some girl, doing so when she was away, then checking your screen every 5 seconds to see when she was back online, only to eventually watch her name change from idle to active, and not receiving any response back once the away message got turned off.

I'm pretty sure Steve Buckhantz invented DAGGER!!!! when watching one of us go through that.

i was always insulted when i gathered up the courage to IM some chick while she was away, only to IM her and not get her auto away response in the chat window. this meant that she didn't have me on her buddy list.

Hahahaha. YES!!! Damn that was fun. (Or what qualified as "fun" way back in the day.)

I lost my V card due in large part to sick game that I had on aim.

    RIP AIM

I'm way more charming in writing than I am in person(internet forum posting since i was 14 probably had a lot to do with that), so AIM was a great look for me.

If Cville South is Oak Hill can Chestertown be Montrose?

my dad grounded me for warning my sister. Internet was serious business for him.

Denton was definitely Montrose. I lived in Chestertown too, so definitely get the appeal of it, but I would suggest adding that as some former primo-level program that eventually was just a shithouse. Dunbar?

Worse feeling in the world in high school was when you clicked a link on a chicks profile that you had on your bl (buddy list) but were too scared to talk to her, and the link wasn't to anything legit, but it logged everyone's name that clicked on it (like the facebook apps that claim they do...or do they?) But maybe that was just teaching us a lesson to not click on stuff like that for when facebook came around.

Some girl(that I unsubtly disliked) that was "dating" one of my friends accused me of stalking her because she had one of those enhanced profile things that had like 5 pages of quotes, polls, game links, and other random shit and kept track of everyone that viewed it. I wasn't stalking her, I was just a huge loser at the time(middle school) and I habitually checked people's AIM profiles when I wasn't talking to anyone or playing Starcraft.

it just seems much creepier I don't know why....... Probably because while i'd be chatting with them i'd be going through their pics looking for spring break bikini pics.

It was awesome when I learned that you could connect with someone to send them pics (porn), songs, etc... and then sign off of AIM, but you could still talk to the person you connected to.

  • Just had to sign on and look. 4 people signed on it shows but they are all cell phones always on at the end when I stopped logging in

My friends and I use to troll people so hard using the few IP relay names
