Oktoberfest (Munich) (Vad?)

  • So I've been wanting to go to this for several years now, but last time we planned a big trip we ended up in Spain (absolutely amazing.) So myself and 3 buddies (ages between 25-29) are planning on going this year. Anyone have a primer on a trip like this? How many days should we actually spend at Oktoberfest (3? 5?) before we move on to other cities. Should we be there for the opening ceremonies (starts Sept. 22) or when it ends (Oct. 7?) We really want to go to Prague and Budapest as well. We have about 15-17 days that we can spend, so any help on an itinerary would be awesome.

DEFINITELY do this! At least 3 days, and plan on being drunk the entire time. Go in the middle of the week, and get to the festival grounds before noon.

  • Get a hotel asap, they book quickly. As far as the fest goes, get there early each day (before 10 am) to get a seat at the Augustiner Tent (best beer in the world IMO). 5 days is plenty, 3 is almost not enough. If the schedule allows it, try getting in a Bayern Munich game while you're there. Will post more later...

  • A friend goes every other year. Their group requires you to wear lederhosen (SP?). Sounds like a great time. They go for a week. I'll try to get details. I highly recommend Austria while you are there.

  • Oktoberfest is for tossers and sheep-shaggers. Beerfest is our lives. The ultimate test of a beer-gamer's mettle!

  • Augustiner is the place to be. Never been to Oktoberfest, but the spring version is just a much smaller scale. Mike's bikes to see the city one day for sure. Then a few days at the festival. If you want to save a few bucks, travel to/from Prague via Student Agency bus. Going to cost you maybe like 20 usd each way. If you plan on Prague(the best city in Europe) I can give you some more advice. Munich and Prague are my two favorite places I've ever been.

Awesome awesome. I'm even more stoked about this trip after reading that and the other posts. How did you feel about being there 6 days? Was that too much? Too little?

We definitely are going to do Prague and need to do decide on a 3rd city (Budapest is the top nominee).

You'll be exhausted if you drink at the tents for 6 straight days.

I'd say 3-4 days at the tents and then the rest doing tourist stuff.

  • I was there for work and had a weekend in there....4 nights was about right...by the time it came to the 5th day, we said no more and went on a tour of Hitler's Eagle's Nest up in Bavaria...beautiful scenery..highly recommend it..

And oh yeah, learn how to love Country Roads, as that song is everywhere (more proof for Nola they are taking over) fingergun

In 15-17 days, don't try to see more than 2-3 places. Much better to spend 4-5 days in each place than to spend your whole time moving around. Budapest is an awesome choice for 3rd city, but it depends on what you're looking for. If it's your first trip to Europe, I'm guessing the experience is kinda similar to Prague.

If you like mountains and want to swing through Switzerland, look me up.

  • Was hoping someone could give me some recommendations on which neighborhoods to stay at while in Berlin and Amsterdam?

I was told Mitte in Berlin was a good area, but I have no clue about Amsterdam.

  • Prague and Budapest are awesome choices for your #2 and #3 cities. Pretty hard to go wrong with those picks. Hit me up when you know dates and I can help hook you up, and Lord knows I've never turned down a reason to visit and drink in either of those cities.

For your other question - I'd go with Prenzlauer Berg over Mitte if you want a neighborhood in Berlin with good access to siteseeing but also lots of bars, restaurants, etc ... it's also one of the few neighborhoods the Soviets didn't blast to rubble in WW2, so it has a great classic feel.

  • Definitely want to do this. On hoophead's note, I'd recommend Interlaken, Switzerland. It's probably my favorite I've ever visited. It's great for adventure sport activities (canyoning, white water rafting, sky diving, and others). The scenery's incredible and Balmer's hostel is pretty damn cool.

Jordaan is pretty good in Amsterdam...there are some amazing B&B's there for relatively cheap, plus they have a lot of street festivals in August. Plus, just about everything within the A10 south of the river is a short walk to a tram. Just be cognizant that those trams close early, and it can be difficult to find a taxi in the redlight district late at night.
