Official Beer Drinking Thread

  • picked up a few tix today for the Good Beer Festival down here in Salisbury..so far this is what they're gonna have:

    Evolution Beers
    Fordham Close Encounter
Most of the common Dogfish Head ones (IPA's, Punkin)
Blue Moon Harvest Moon Pumpkin Ale
    Anchor Steam Porter
    Magic Hat Hex
    Flying Dog Raging Bitch
    Heavy Seas Peg Leg Stout
    Samuel Adams Octoberfest
    Kona Longboard

I've had the Evo's and Dogfish Head's, any recommedations on the others there listed?

  • Anyone had a pumpkin stout? I've always thought it seemed like it would work better than ale, but the only one I know of is Fisherman's (never tried it).

    CivilTerp

  • I've heard Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout is really good but I've never had it myself

  • My wife had dinner @ Franklin's tonight, and surprised me with a growler of their 2IPA -- Malty Mark and the Hoppy Bunch. (Added humor b/c I share Mr. Wahlberg's name...well, not the Wahlberg part).

I liked it...and really, over the course of a year, there are so many threads on here asking about where to go eat before Maryland games. You need to go to Franklin's. It is easily the best option for food and beer around College Park. Go there and give them a try.

Oh, and Mike Jones helped out on this review.

Was everyones first beer drinking experience with Natty/Coors/Bud or something of the like? I started drinking on a school trip to Germany. So my first real beer experiences were sick ass German lagers, some of the tastiest beers you will ever have. Think it was pretty much impossible for me not to develop into a beer snob after that and I'm not even 21 yet.

Oh yeah, mine was domestics. But that was in the 70's and imports, IPAs etc weren't around much.

My favorite beer by far is Dogfish IPA 60.

  • Stoudt's Fat Dog (Imperial Oatmeal Stout) - def one of the better in this category I've tasted. I've always been a bit underwhelmed by Stoudt's, but they knocked it out of the park w/ this one.

Im ready for aa 5th of vodica to end my feels.

How long does the growler stay carbonated? Couple of hours or so?

  • re: Growlers, I asked this question yesterday at one of my go to beer stores that sells them. He said about 7-10 days depending on your seal, less for screw cap, more for the ceramic and rubber plug (think Grolsch bottle). He also said once you open them, you have one day, maybe two.

  • I just found out about wet hops. Foundation Harvest Ale is wonderful. Has that citrus hop flavor I love - supercharged. Any recommendations for others of this seasonal style?

Btw - Brooklyn Chocolate and Foundation Breakfast are out now

  • My new favorite beer is Left hand's good Juju. It used to be called juju ginger, but they changed the name.

  • good to hear breakfast stout is out now. will have to make a run to virginia to get some.

disappointing that brooklyn chocolate only comes in a 4-pack now. used to get 6-packs for less than the 4-pack sells for now. good stuff, tho.

and toogs is right - dfh's punkin' is good this year but hardly as good as it has been.

I thought Sierra Nevada did a Harvest Ale w/ wet hops as well. Either way, it was good. And I assume you meant Founder's Breakfast.....someone gave me a recipe for it here, and I still need to give it a try. Great beer.

  • Forgot about this thread...to address three week old questions:

    1. It's a Miami of Ohio basketball shirt...not da U. I went there. Wally Szczerbiak lived down the hall freshman year.

    2. The basic rule with growlers is that once you break the seal, you need to finish it. Like wine. So being presented with a growler of 8% beer at 9PM on a work night was a fun distraction I got to deal with.

Other seasonal beer news -- I had Goose Island's Harvest Ale this past week. Liked it a lot.

I've never been a fan of pumpkin beers, but it's that time of year so I'll give it another shot. What's your favorite?

  • anybody know when Fresh Hop and Nugget Nectar hit the shelves? I love me some hoppy IPAs.

Their Harvest ale does indeed use "wet" hops. Apparently they now have Norther & Southern (New Zealand hops) versions.

I was disappointed with their "big American IPA" offering: Torpedo. I feel like their standard Pale Ale has more hop goodness then the Torpedo. Any one else try it?

Also, anyone try the 30th Anniversary?

Same thing happened to me when I went over to Bavaria for a summer at 16. Totally ruined high school parties when I got back though since no one had access to anything but crap I refused to drink.

Had the Stone IPA and Great Lakes Eliot Ness recently and highly recommend both.

Rogue has an excellent one, although I don't know how easy their stuff is to find in the DMV region.

  • Looks like I am too late for the Sierra Nevada Harvest wet hops this year. I consoled myself with some more Founders Harvest. I hate to pay that much but I know I will miss it when it is gone..which will be soon

  • 22 oz. Sierra Estate Homegrown Ale tonight.

It's good...not great...and tastes very much like Sierra, but less crisp. Not in a bad way....I guess it's more "complex" than your standard Sierra.

nugget nectar will be next spring, IIRC. i still have 3-4 bottles and a couple of bumpers from last season. i'm definitely getting a couple of cases next year. easily a top5 beer, imo.
