Official 2013 Spring Running Thread - Run for Boston

  • Time for a spring thread? Hopefully that'll bring the runners back out.

NYC half in 2 and a half weeks. Ran 11 hilly Central Park Miles on Monday, feeling pretty good - hoping to beat my time from last year.

  • I'm running HAT. I feel like i am coming back from injury pretty strong. Original plan was just to finish, now looking at PRing (sub 5:35). Everyone from the waitlist got in, which is great, because a friend was logging a lot of trail miles in preparation, and it would suck not to get in.

I really like my Garmin 310xt. Locks onto satellites fast and has a battery that lasts like 18-24 hours of running. Most watches have to be recharged more frequently. You could take a look at the 610. It has touch features, but no problems to the extent of the 400 models. I refuse to go touchscreen though.
Also the 910xt is coming out (or is just out). That is a very nice watch from the reviews (dcrainmaker.com). Also, since the 910xt is the new model, you may find a chance to get a 310xt cheap.

Did you previously have a garmin? The old 305 is still a great watch, and can probably be had for <$200.

Jemo- Having never run Central park, and only been down near the southwest portion of CP, can you elaborate on your definition of "hilly"? The NYC half looks like a great course, and if i never run NYC marathon, i'd like to run that. I don't want to be caught by surprise by the terrain...

It sounds like you're a pretty veteran trail runner if you're rocking the 50K races, so I don't think the hills would bother you too much. Central Park is basically never flat - there are rolling hills along the entire 6 mile loop, with maybe a half mile of flat ground on the east side in the 80s/90s. The toughest part of the park is the "Harlem Hills" which is about a mile stretch of steep winding hills in the upper west corner of the park.

The nice thing about the NYC half is that the park is the first half of the race - once you get spit out onto 7th avenue and are running on the roads, the course becomes flat as a pancake. I ran the race last year and had a pretty severe reverse split (57:29 for the first 10k, 53:48 for the second) that I attribute to the second half of the race being significantly easier.

It's a fantastic race and I highly recommend it - throw yourself in the lottery next year, that's how I got in this time. Much better odds of getting into the half through the lottery than getting into the Marathon that way, which is basically impossible.

Bump please. How was this thread only 1 page?

A little over 3 weeks until the HAT 50K Run...anyone else running?

Also, lbt or rob, I'm in the market for a Garmin...suggestions/advice? Thanks!

I have the Garmin 405 and I like it a lot. Yes there a lot people out there who hate it because of the touch bezel and it does in fact sometimes act funky when it gets wet. But here is the thing, you can lock the bezel. You can set up three screens with three different stats on each screen and set the device to auto scroll and lock the bezel. The watch will then scroll through the screens while you run. You can even adjust how fast it changes screens.

I did this for a few runs but after awhile I realized that there where only three stats I needed to know while I was actually out on a run: distance, time and pace. The rest is just information overkill that isn't needed while running. So now I set one screen to show these three things, lock the bezel and run. While the bezel is locked wetness will not affect it. All the other stats (heart rate, elevation gain, laps, fastest pace, etc) can be reviewed when you get home and download it all to Garmin Connect with your ant plugin. BTW, that Garmin Connect website is great. It draws you a map of your run and shows you your stats all along your run. Fantastic. And it stores all of your runs so that you can see how you are progressing. Hope that helps.

It looks to be selling on Amazon for $159

  • Thanks for the advice on Garmins. I need/want a watch for my birthday so it'd be nice to get one and it'll probably motivate me to run more often.

  • Anyone running in the St. Patrick's Day 8K in D.C. next weekend? I'm registered and looking forward to it. It'll be my first 8K race and first event in the city, as well (I've done a few 5Ks in the 'burbs).

  • I have a 305. I love it, but would love more tech in it.

  • Need some injury help, running people.

So on my last long run before my half (which is a week from Sunday), I started feeling my achilles heel, and it was sore for about a day or two after. It feels fine now when walking, but about 2 miles into running I start feeling it again, and then it gets pretty tender. Any tips on kicking this before the race? I've been icing it and running very lightly since I felt it on my long run. Should I invest in a compression sleeve for the half? Any other tips?

  • I wouldn't start running in anything new for the race. I think that would be worse given the distance.

I would take it easy. The week before my first marathon, I was sick and felt injured. I didn't run a mile until 2 days before the race.

don't know if this is what ails you, but proceed w/ caution

I'll be running it Sunday. Using it as a speed workout since my main spring race is the Cherry Blossom 10 mile run. Should hopefully show me I'm on track for the time I'm looking for on April 1.

I'm jealous of people who got in. I didn't get in this year.

Anyone else thinking or in the Ragnar for DC? I was going to sign up with friends for the Miami one in January, but one of our mutual friends is getting married two weeks prior in Miami. So it's tough to swing two trips to Miami in 2 weeks.

I'm in the process of convincing people to get in on the Ragnar. It sounds like an absolute awesome concept.

  • Fox: Fox, what do you think about the HAT Run Saturday?

Fox: Well, good question Fox. Not really thinking about it too much. I think that's a good thing...not getting nervous, you know?

    Fox: Yeah I hear ya.

    Fox: Peace...good luck Saturday!

That's what I hear. I think that's to my advantage...it'll slow everyone else down, ha.

  • I hope to hit the hay soon...530a comes pretty quick before a 50K.

robterp, look for bib #192 (you'll probably only see me on the turn-around at the beginning of the 3 mile loop again)...good luck brother!

luckily i live 20 mins from the start, so i will be up a bit longer. Hoping to watch UK/IU and NCST/KU.

I'm bib #29. I'll be there by 730. I'm ready to embrace the pain (and rain)

I was talking with someone the other day, and we were discussing whether Cherry Blossom is a lottery in the truest sense. My thought is people entering with faster predicted finish times are much more likely to get in than those likely to walk much of the race.

However, this could be completely wrong. Just my own wondering aloud.

  • hat50k was certainly interesting. The rain cause trails to be pretty sloppy in a couple spots, but i avoided the dreaded wipeout. Often felt like I was running on loose sand at the beach. Had my doubts at the last aid station with about 5 miles to go, but set a PR by 7 mins. 5:28, which i am happy with, but still too much walking, especially on the uphills. It seemed like a strong field this year.

Fox - hope you had a great time! I tried looking for you, but with all the raingear, bib numbers weren't nearly as obvious. I was wearing a black hat with white M logo. Looks alot like a Terps hat, but it was a local Charm City main street mile hat.

For the rest of you, I'd definitely recommend this ultra to those wanting to knock out their first 50k. Fair, but challenging enough to wish you never signed up :-)

    robterp

  • Great job rob. The trails were indeed sloppy and felt like you were sloshing around at times.

I pulled a Fox again and was lazy about training. I got a DNF after finishing the first 17 miles and felt like my quads and calves couldn't take another 13 miles.

I'm sure I'll sign up again, ha, because I'm crazy for pain like that.

My wife came today and said many folks were dropping out after the first 4 miles or so when rain was really coming down.

The winner, Caleb, was blazing through the course when he passed me.

    The Fox

  • yeah he finished in 4 hrs. Ridiculous, and I heard it was his first 50k. The 2nd or 3rd place guy wiped out twice. I guess if you run that fast, you are gonna bite it a few times, lol.

It's a tough event, and comes at a time when weather usually derails most runners' training. I think we got lucky this year Jan-Mar. I hope you keep at it! Probably see you out there next year, I am sure.
