Office fridge situation. WHAT DO YOU DO? (pizza)(important)

  • goterpss said...

I'm about to install a new fridge policy at my firm -- no storing of food. The fridge is for us to keep cold drinks on hand -- water, juices, sodas, etc. Employees who wish to bring their own lunches may also keep them in the fridge in the morning, but all food must be removed by 4pm every day.

Yes I am in chrage of fridge policies. :humblebrag

We have a fridge by the main conference room for which that is the policy.

We then have two fridges by the lunchroom. I think there is a clean-out once every couple of weeks or maybe once a month. When I get promoted to Fridge Monitor I will make it once a week.

  • Every day is a little harsh. From time to time, I bring lunch but decide to go out instead. But Friday COB dump-out is clearly called for.

classlessthug: I have too much on my plate to worry about the fact that my junk intimidates some needle D undergrad.

  • There's a sandwich place I really like that is too far away to actually go to for lunch. But they deliver! They have a delivery minimum though, so I'll order two sandwiches, eat one and put the other in the fridge for the next day. A daily fridge cleaning policy would destroy that system and force me to socialize with my co-workers to find out if any of them would like to go in on the sandwich ordering with me.

  • the issue is that all these anecdotes are exceptions and not the reality. The reality is people store food for days on end and forget about it. Also a lot of people here order in dinner at their desks then put some leftovers for lunch the next day that never gets eaten. It all piles up. The fridge isn't here for food storage, it's to keep drinks cold. As an accommodation to employees who choose to bring in their lunches they can also use the fridge, it's not meant to be a long-term storage (and long-term is more than a day in my book).

  • My roommate and I have never cleaned our fridge. I'm pretty sure there's some watermelon in the back that he literally brought when we moved in two and a half years ago. We should probably both be killed for the good of society.

This is the kind of premium banter that really should be kept to the mafia game thread.

  • You MUST put your name and the date on your food (write on foil, label with tape, etc). If food is in the fridge unlabeled, it is fair game/will be thrown out.

That way once the learning curve kicks in and everyone labels their shit, you will know who is responsible for leaving that item of food in the fridge and how long it has been in there.*

*some people might change the labels, should be shot on sight.

The firm's resources aren't to be used to store employees personal food items. As an accommodation, because we might have some room in the fridge, employees can use the fridge for their lunches that day.

This is correct. My company took it a step further. No fridges. Saves money on cleaning costs and electric bills. Probably doesnt hurt vending revenues either. We don't even have sinks, other than the bathroom obviously.

  • yeah, employee policies aren't written for the diligent ones who do what is right. They are written for the abusers.

Given that we have similar policies, I think it should be pointed out that where your office is should matter for this. If you are in an office park in the suburbs where you need to bring lunch and keep certain condiments on hand on all times is different then being in the middle of manhattan where you can get any item within 1 block or delivered.

Today I had breakfast and lunch delivered so far.

  • I didn't realize people in Manhattan never bring their lunch and then decide to go out or eat half their lunch and save the other for the next day. Ya'll big city folk are so fancy! Thanks for taking time to speak with us unwashed masses. Lastly, I literally laughed out loud at tecmo and neal's posts. Good work as usual, fellas.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

I get a 1lb of lunch meat and some bread at the beginning of the week and make super ultra boring sandwiches at work. I prefer to make them at work so I bring that all in and leave it in the fridge during the week. I am the 99%.

That sounds terrible. Do you have to beg for a lump of coal for the office fireplace and for a whole day off on Christmas too?

yeah that's not really my problem. So we have 50-60 employees on our floor, if they all were to bring a pound of deli meats on monday, the firm is supposed to pay for refrigeration for 50-60 lbs of meat.

    goterpss

  • eamhokie94 said...

Not in that building anymore. Wish I was.

50 lbs of meat takes up less than 2 cubic feet of space. Is this really an issue for a one percenter?

    TortugaGrande

  • If you have the refrigerator aren't you paying for the refrigeration whether it is full of meat or whether it is empty?

Dude, if you have 50-60lb of thinly sliced deli meat in your office every Monday, it would be the best thing of all time. It's not your problem, it's no one's problem. It's like a freakin' miracle 52 times a year.
