I signed him up for soccer, too... I just got an email from the league begging for coaches in his age group. If I know nothing of soccer other than "kick the ball into the goal", would this qualify me to teach six year olds the game?

I'll bet that guy had shit running down both legs.

That's about the level of experience of most of the coaches in my six year old's league. The key to a successful coach at that level seems to be a willingness to be strict and to very clearly tell them what you want each player to do. My next door neighbor actually has college basketball playing experience but is a pretty horrible coach for both that and soccer just because he is too nice/relaxed with the kids. Whenever we have an assistant coach with one of the inexperienced-but-stricter fathers stepping in its like a whole new team. To be fair, my neighbor didn't really want to coach and only stepped in because no one else would.

I want my kid to be well-rounded and not get burnt out of the grappling stuff, but the big reason we aren't having him do football and basketball next year is that it doesn't really make sense to pull him out of sports where he's getting really high-level instruction (former Olympians and national team members/coaches) just to run around cluelessly.

I'm pretty happy with the swimming and diving, though, even though the instruction is mostly from high school kids.

Yeah, overbearing dick of a sports father here, too, but he has fun with every sport and we always give him the choice.

And in our league they do give the coaches a bunch of handouts as to what drills and stuff you should be running. I'm sure it's the same in pretty much every rec little league thing. So you're not completely on your own. Just mostly.

It probably depends a lot on the individual kid, but I discovered very quickly (as a temp coach for soccer and BJJ) that I shouldn't be actively involved in a coaching capacity with mini-me's sports, because he goes out of his way to clown around to try to get my attention and he's much better behaved/more focused with someone else coaching. So my coaching makes the sports less fun for both of us, because of course it annoys me when he's acting up all the time.

We have a much better sports relationship with me just casually doing skill games-type work with him and then just being at all of his practices and matches. And he's watches a lot of my practices, too.

Have you been living under a rock or something? There are tons of commercials for them.
