  • I just walked in on my roommate dipping Cooler Ranch Doritos in ranch dressing. When did I move to Iowa?

Is this some kind of sex code?

  • I was just reminded of my sophomore roommate for some reason...his go to hook up music was James Taylor. So if I came home and heard "fire and rain", I had to go kill time somewhere. His choice of music amused the hell out of me. This was 98/99.

  • Notes from South Padre Island - It'll be Spring Break in about 3 weeks, nubile young girls frolicking drunkenly and barely dressed in the sand and surf....so, naturally I decide to stay here on business for a few nights now...when none of them are here. "Winter Texans" are here, everywhere. But like reverse vampires, they disappear when the sun goes down.

Driving in from the mainland, I passed one of those newfangled moving signs that all the schools are using nowadays. Out of the corner of my eye I see what looks like the word "Tampons", which doesn't seem so weird, because the school looks a lot like a Walgreens or a CVS, until I realize that it IS a school, Port Isabel HS. I'm trying to figure out why they'd be telling the world about their high school tampons, when I see their mascot is a big ass sport fish...the tarpon. Duhh.

I am the youngest person on South Padre Island right now, other than the people who actually work here. Hordes of old people, the aforementioned 'Winter Texans', in couples, are marauding the restaurants. I think there was a Monty Python sketch about marauding gangs of old people - it's like that here. If I hung out another 3 weeks, I'd probably be the oldest person on the island. What a weird dichotomy for the service workers, which leads to my last note.

Sitting in a little seafood restaurant (Captain Roy's), eating dinner tonight - the server is a cute young girl. I asked her who tips worse, 'this crowd' or Spring breakers? She gets kind of a stricken look on her face, probably wondering if she should answer, then whispers, "this crowd!" I shake my head as I fill out the check, then she comes back to my table to show me the last couple's check - $17.50 food and tax, 30 cent tip. Unbelievable.

And yes, I tipped her over 20%.

  • I respect many of paul's opinions, but the fact that he shits on New Girl really bothers me.

For others that enjoy good comedy, Delocated Season Three debuts on adult swim tonight. It's really not the kind of show that you need to know the back story to get into it.

  • SATerp, I'll be checking out South Padre Island in a few weeks during the height of Spring Break. It'll be a change from the office culture I'm sure.

  • Just spent a half hour watching St. Vincent videos...like, but don't love the music, but I'm so infatuated w/ Annie Clark. I want to make sweet, sweet indie love w/ her....

St Vincent - Surgeon from 4AD Session

View the full session at http://4ad.com/sessions/010 In September of this year, St Vincent took a giant leap forward with the release of third album, Strange Mercy. This time out Annie Clark was to combine her long-celebrated musical virtuosity with ambitious songwriting that ran a gamut of emotional cadences, all the while underpinned by a colourful sense of melody. Recording these songs live for the first time, St Vincent has performed four tracks from Strange Mercy for the tenth visual installment in the 4AD Session series. Shot at Shangri-La Studios in the heart of the Brooklyn film and photography district in Greenpoint, the session was recorded with Annie's new band, Daniel Mintseris (keys), Toko Yasuda (moog) and Matthew Johnson (drums). Given St Vincent's transgression from the underground to the pop spotlight over the course of three studio albums, it's somewhat fitting that Shangri-La host the session having initially earned its name as a secret spot known only through word of mouth. As with all of the sessions in the series, directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard filmed the four tracks with a clear artistic vision. In this instance, the inspiration came from an unlikely source -- the memory of seeing a 1968 Shirley Bassey performance of 'This is My Life' on Rai Uno for Italian TV. With that reference point in mind, Annie takes centre stage against the backdrop of a projected live-feed, resplendent in glamorous eye make-up and with her always-impressive guitar work brought clearly to the fore. More interestingly still, the classic showbusiness styling of the session is held in stark contrast to the affecting and darkly-tinged emotional undertones of 'Chloe In The Afternoon' and 'Surgeon', representing perfectly the themes that run throughout Strange Mercy. Taking Strange Mercy on the road, St Vincent finishes her current US tour this month before embarking on a European tour in November, starting on the 10th at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.

  • I'm meeting a friend I haven't seen since August for dinner tonight. Inevitably some variation of "What's new?" will come up, and I have absolutely nothing interesting to say in response to that question. Yep.

Welcome to my life, and it even applies to friends I haven't seen in a couple of years. That's why we talk about our kids even though we know its annoying.

  • The trick is to find the stuff in your life that you feel is boring and miserable while other people are fascinated by it. For me its spending all day talking to old people and how crazy they can be. I'm still horrible at the conversation part after about 10-15 minutes have passed though.

Yeah, we talk about our dogs, too. There is a stray cat that lives in our backyard, but we don't usually talk about him. He did just recently lose his tail, but I don't know the story behind that.

I hate those conversations. "So what have you been up to?" kids, work, kids rinse and repeat. The interesting things are only interesting in context, but not necessarily interesting to someone else. High School reunions are that conversation * 1000. For my 20 year reunion, they asked everyone to submit a little bio, that they then compiled in a little book they handed out to everyone at the event. For my bio, I copied Steve Irwin's wikipedia page verbatim. I had people asking me about Australia all night long. Crikey.

Actually, this isn't entirely true. I did start watching "Breaking Bad."

To me, conversation is like a mix of 20 questions and hot/cold. I start asking questions, trying to get towards something they are interested in so that they can do the talking. Then I just try to look interested in whatever vapid subject gets them excited while I daydream about what awesome new schtick I'm going to use on the suque.

Awesome. Was this before or after he died?

I imagine this could have had even better success if you were single.

And has it really been over 5 years since he died? Crikey indeed.

  • Has New Girl gotten markedly better since the first episode or two? Based on that small sample size, I'd agree with those who felt it was awful.
