Not the Randomness Thread

  • Either it's broken or else somebody decided to get rid of it and didn't tell me. So...

...this is either a new Randomness thread, or it's a Jay Baruchel thread, your pick.

I was watching The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and I would swear this guy is Christian Slater's son, except that he looks nothing like him. The voice and the mannerisms are pure Christian Slater. Amazing.

    Jay Baruchel - IMDb

Jay Baruchel, Actor: How to Train Your Dragon. Jay Baruchel was born raised in Montreal, QC Canada. He has a younger sister who also acts. He started acting in 1995 when he made his first of three appearances on the hit show ....

  • Apparently one of my friends just saw Just Go With It and legitimately enjoyed it and said it was the funniest movie he's seen in a while. And he felt the need to post this information in reply to a Facebook status about Pulp Fiction's greatness. I'm just going to pretend that didn't happen so we can continue being friends.

  • Playing Mega Man 2 on Nintendo... 4 things pop out at me..

Copyright 1989 = 22 years ago (I bought it when it came out)
The timeframe 200X is now in the past
Why does this game feel harder than it did as a kid?
This game holds up the test of time.

  • The Story of Mario Cuellar

Yesterday afternoon I was waiting for the elevator on the 4th floor of my hotel. I glanced over at the nearby ice machine, there was a sheet of paper in the chute where ice comes out. "Guess it's broken," I mused.

Later that evening, getting off the elevator, I noticed the paper was still there, with a lot of writing on it, hand printed lettering. Out of curiosity I took a closer look. It started out, "Mario Cuellar is being murdered by Dr [name redacted] and other doctors, through electrostimulators. You can contact [names redacted] for more information - please tell the authorities, if Mario is found dead, Dr. [name redacted] is responsible." There were some other things on there, mainly contact numbers and such.

Nuts, obviously. I went to my room to enjoy the Fl State game courtesy of TheDexter. Around 10:30 last night I heard a man yelling in the hotel hallway, "Help me! [unintelligible] Help me!"

WTF, I thought. Of course, I looked through the peephole but didn't see anything. A few minutes later, the same thing. Then it quieted down.

About an hour later, it happens again. "Help! Help me! [unintelligible] I hear some other, male, voice.

    "Hey, what's going on?"

"Oh, thank you, I'm Mario Cuellar. There are some doctors who are trying to kill me. Can you help me?"

    [unintelligible reply]

    The hallway quiets down.

About twenty minutes later, I hear: "Come on Mario, we've got some doctors who will take care of you - no electrostimulators."

    God bless the Houston PD.
    .
    .
    .

And I never said it was the best story ever, just a little slice out of my life...and Mario Cuellar's.

  • I got fired today. Pretty terrible feeling. Decided to switch from a Tip Staff/Law Clerk to just a pure Tip Staff. Seeing as how I sucked in his eyes and he could hire someone for cheaper, I'm out. However, he's had me training the new Tip Staff for the last two weeks telling both her and I she would be a part-time only. Didn't tell her she was replacing me. She didn't know until she asked why I was so quiet today. She felt terrible. (In an odd story, her daughter and I went on a few dates when I first moved up to Erie as she was the first person I met up here.)

He asked me to work the rest of the day and come back Friday. Pretty awkward.

Definitely considering switching fields. Have an interview at PNC already.

If it gets me back to Pittsburgh and out of this terrible, God-forsaken city, it's a blessing in disguise. Two bits of advice needed:

    1. Do I leave it on or off the resume? Judge had nothing but good things to say about everything except my writing which, even though he said it was getting better, he remarked it just "wasn't going to work out because he didn't have any more time to wait around.: He also didn't say if he would give me a good recommendation or not. Do I ask? I almost am so angry at him/embarrassed in myself that I never want to see him again.

    2. How do I approach the inevitable question about why I left/got fired in an interview? How do I turn it around into some positive light? I've thought about saying how much I hated it, how much I hated the area, how tired I was from working 80 hour weeks that I couldn't put my best foot forward, etc. These are all true, but they just come off as excuses. So how do I turn it around? Just explain we didn't see eye-to-eye from the beginning?
