No Good Deed Goes...

  • On the train home from work tonight, I woke up a guy I knew gets off at my stop whom I realized was going to sleep through the stop. I felt great I saved him an embarrassing hassle getting back home (I know, I've done it before). While he wasn't overly thankful, I still was pleased I did a good deed.

Walking home, thinking about my decision to be a good Samaritan and marveling at how good it made me feel, I mean really good inside; I started contemplating about the meaning of life, God and things I rarely ponder. WTF is up with that?

No sooner into my wondering about how this factors into the meaning of life, do I see a deer coming around the corner of the sidewalk toward me. Why it is literally prancing down the sidewalk and getting so close, I have no idea. I swear it was like the scene in the Walking Dead was supposed to make you feel. I tried not to spook it, but to no avail. It bolts into the road and proceeds to immediately get hit by a car, fly through the air and then slide in my direction; stopping in the middle of the lane abutting the sidewalk.

What the fuck! Since the car that hit it just drove off, I start to call the police as to alert them of the dead deer in the middle of the road. While on-hold, I am debating if I should drag it to the side of the road or not. Then I see its head move. I now realize I have to tell them she needs to be put down and that I don't want to risk getting kicked trying to move her. Some on-coming cars are now approaching and barely stop in time from making a real mess. Still on-hold, I'm now debating if I need to stick around until the cops come to put her down and flag oncoming cars to alert them of the deer (it is a blind corner). The deer then looks me in the eyes, suddenly jumps up and hobbles off into the woods. Shaken, I hang up and get back on my way. That really good feeling inside was gone.

I can't help feel that this was one of those life defining/altering moments, but I know not what to make of it. Was the Cosmos trying to tell me about the need for balance or something?

I relayed the episode to my wife and she just shrugged and said "weird". So I'm posting here to elicit any possibly "deeper" responses.

Just a normal day in the life or something more?

  • i live in carroll county. hitting a deer is one my greatest fears in life. besides the fact that i don't want to risk my life or the lives of anyone in my car, and i don't want to deal with the insurance companies/repairs/etc., i just don't want to kill an animal. it's sad because you cannot really help wild animals. if it were a dog that got hit and it was still alive, you likely would have thrown it into your vehicle and rushed it to an emergency vet, but you cannot do the same for wild animals. i'm sad for the deer that is probably dying a slow, painful death in the woods right now. :(

  • Stories like that are why I always carry a .357 magnum. Deer gravely wounded? Merciful eternal sleep, right between the eyes. Guy bitches when I wake him on the Metro? Merciful eternal sleep, right between the eyes.

  • If you didn't take the time to wake the guy, you might have been a few steps closer and had the deer land on you.

    TerpBE

  • Fuck deer. Bambi made people think they are cute animals when they are the panicky retards of the woods.

Coming from a guy who has hit a deer and a dog, it really isn't that big of deal. There's nothing you can do about it, and you can't prevent it, so why worry?

Haha, I don't think I would've given a second's thought to having woke the dude up. Let's not act like cancer was cured here. At the same time, I do appreciate the OP's joy of the simple act of helping a stranger and do agree that there are few feelings better. As for the deer, don't sweat it...not much you can do in that situation. Perhaps the Cosmos are telling you that your compassion for the deer saved its life and brought it back to health. Just kidding, it's dead. I am kind of curious what metro stop you got off at where you encountered a deer nearby.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

Between the eyes isn't all that merciful. If you are going for merciful, you need to put one shot at the back and bottom of the skull.

  • I hit a dog a few weeks ago on the way to work. I was doing about 70 so the dog was killed instantly, but it sucked. However, I didn't really have any problems with the insurance or getting repairs done, other than it taking a motherf#$&!@% week to get the new bumper back from the paint shop.

this reminds me of a story i recently heard. Family horse needs to be put down, dad and son spend all afternoon digging a big enough hole to bury it in.

dad gets rifle while son spends half an hour getting the old horse to the burial plot. whole family comes out for the farewell cry, then everyone goes inside while dad and son finish the sad task at hand

dad shoots horse.....in the heart......he missed......horse gets up and disappears. They search the woods, go back and get shovels/pick axe/etc, dig new hole, roll/drag/wrestle/ whatever 1200 pound animal into the hole and cover.

  • I once hit a man in Dearborn, Michigan. A hit and run. I hit him and just kept on going. I don't know if he's alive or dead, but I'm sorry. Not a day goes by I don't see his face.

  • I had two friends go out hunting this morning. I was supposed to go with them but I was way too lazy. They were out there at 4 am and stayed out until 1 in the afternoon when they got tired of noob hunters stomping all over around them. Not long after hearing their story I was driving for not 30 seconds when I stopped at a stop sign and in front of me at the edge of the woods across the street were two deer. They stopped and looked at me. I slowly moved through the intersection, making my turn, as they slowly walked deeper into the woods. I'm also not sure of the significance of this.
