Nigel Farage of the UKIP just annihilates the EU

  • Wow. I once joked to my friend in the late 90s that the EU wouldn't last 20 years. I just don't see how it can last in this economic climate. Spain is teetering, and I see the wealthier EU countries bolting before the EU welfare state swallows them up, too.

  • And to think what a lot of EU regulations have done to destroy traditional/cultural heritage things like food production...I know the cheese and meat industries in various EU countries have been fighting homogenization/regulation by the EU.

  • My favorite part was when he was talking about the EU telling Ireland not to hold their elections yet. Unbelievable.

I like you, but your responses are so predictable on these threads.

Paul, you are a good poster, but you are becoming kaiser on these threads. Please either make an alias to post on these threads, or just refrain from them altogether. I don't want to think of you as "annoying political agenda guy #4."

  • Oh thank God the board police showed up.

I engage is serious political debate on this board more than most, and sometimes it's fun to get in some ribbing. So forgive me for offending your serious posting nature. I'm sure there's a fart thread somewhere that I can blow off steam in.

Should have gone with "butt of course," amirite?

I would down vote you, but I want to make sure I still have down votes available when Alex claims that Martin Skrtel is better than any American soccer player.

It has nothing to do with "serious posting" or "board police." The dembot/pubbot schticks are boring.

Well maybe if other people joined in the debates they might weed out the idiots, right? If you wanna start a debate on the Euro, be my guest. I'll grab my worthless deutsche marks and lira for inspiration!

I miss alex, in a perverse kinda way. Are you my down vote stalker? That guy is devoted, I must say.

And no, I'm not. I would never feign enough devotion to a message board to stalk a poster.

The United States would be ready to support the extension of the European Financial Stability Facility via an extra commitment of money from the International Monetary Fund, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.

  • What else can they do? If the euro were to fail now all hope for a recovery would be wiped out. There isn't a good solution at the moment.

The debate has already been started. You seem to think the EU will stay together, though, so what is your argument for it?

  • They're going to fight tooth and nail to keep the EU together. For one thing, failure of the euro will have disastrous effects on world economies. Second, collectively, they have much more global geo-political clout than they would individually. Third, despite the fact that the member nations are our allies, the world is not comfortable with the US being the only global superpower. Fourth, and maybe most important, ego. No one wants to admit failure.

Basically this. Germany and others will bitch and whine, but they'll be bought off by more power within the structure. It's been almost two decades, you can't break it up and start from scratch.

    1) Possibly true, but it shouldn't. Economics is simple. It's about addition, not multiplication. The whole in general should not be greater than or less than the sum of the parts. If it is one way or the other, then there are some issues with perception and valuations. While the failure of the EU could hurt countries like Greece, it would help countries like Germany which no longer would have to waste resources trying to keep the others afloat.

    2) This might be true for the lesser countries in the EU, but for countries like Germany, France, and the UK, they will still be players in geo-politics.

    3) China might have something to say about that within 20 years.

    4) This is really the most likely reason why the EU would stay together. It has never really made sense to have a Union of countries with no common language who frequently had adversarial relationships with each other, imo.

There are no easy answers right now...the Euro will fail at some point, whether it be now or five years from now. If there aren't massive structural changes in the EU's welfare states, the fall of the Euro is inevitable.

We can bail them out now and it'll cost us dearly, but I guess we have to look like we're doing what we can to help them. It's not going to amount to anything, though. There won't be a recovery in the countries who insist on doing the same thing over and over again.

How about we let Germany that has tons of money in the bank bail them out. I just don't know where this money comes from.
