Next Gen Nintendo (WTF?)

  • Are they serious with this? Why are the moving backwards? That controller combined with the release of games that have already been out for a year on other systems could be the end of that company

  • They'll be fine. Every first party game they release sells better than most anything on Sony or MS consoles, and all their silly gimmicky sports and party games sell better. Yea their press conference sucked, but EVERY press conference sucked at E3 this year. There was one(ONE!) new IP that got any hype from the whole conference.

  • I'm pretty sure plenty of people were saying the same thing about the Wii in the lead-up to that console being launched, and I think Nintendo did alright there.

Yes, it all looks ridiculous, but it'll sort itself out.

  • I'm still pissed Nintendo never released all the old games on the Wii. I was dying for TMNT 2 and 3 to be released. That and I really wanted the WCW/NWO games to be released.

  • The Nintendo press conference was very underwhelming, but they positioned themselves so well with the Wii that they will probably be ok and get re-ups from the people they sucked in with the Wii the first time. Though I think this will probably be the first time in my life I'm not going to get a new Nintendo system within the first year of release.

  • last Nintendo system i had was Game Cube and sold it within a few months. just dont play those type of games enough to buy one. but i do enjoy having a friend with one for the occasional Mario Kart type night.

I'd have agreed a couple of years ago, but the Wii's popularity seems to have really waned in the past couple of years as hardly any great games have come out (besides Zelda last fall).

As a purely anecdotal bit of evidence, I got a Wii in 2007 and was really excited about it. It was creative, and it was something my wife would actually play. I enjoyed the Mario Galaxy games, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Twilight Princess, etc. However, after that, it seemed like they ran out of ideas pretty quickly, and all the games I was looking forward to were either not out for the Wii, or were available in much better versions on PS3 or 360.

I still might buy the system at some point just because I love Mario/Zelda games, but I'm a DINK with too much money to spend. I'm curious who Nintendo's core market is going to be going forward.

Yeah the Wii was very innovative and fun for casual gamers when it came out in 2006, so Nintendo will have to push that characteristic of the WiiU if they want to sell those systems. Like when they showed that extended gameplay of that haunted house minigame for Nintendoland, it really only looked like something that would be fun for 15 minutes for casual gamers, but they'll need to push that stuff to get everyone to splurge again on a new system. The price point will be key - seems to me it can't go over $250 to start with.

Plus while it's nice that the WiiU will have the capabilities to play some of the current generation games on XBox 360 and PS3, what are they going to do when Microsoft and Sony release systems with even greater capabilities?

I feel like that only gets you so far though. When I bought the Wii, I was somewhere above a truly casual gamer but certainly not a hard core gamer. However, the Wii got boring to me really quickly other than the Mario/Zelda games, and there's been basically nothing at all recently that excites me on the Wii aside from those two franchises.

I guess my main point is that Nintendo can always appeal to beginning gamers and extremely casual gamers. However, the definition of "casual" can cover a pretty good-sized group of people, and I feel like Nintendo is limiting itself only to a small part of that, especially now that Sony and Microsoft both have motion capabilities.

  • Nintendo is f'd. The Wii was a POS that intrigued people because it was different for all of 5 minutes (which is why myself and a ton of other people I know have one). That novelty is gone now, and a new screen on the controller (which will probably cost $100) isn't going to replace that. Your average gamer wants a console that has great graphics, a solid online experience, and other multimedia features, like video playback, streaming content, etc. the Wii had none of that and WiiU probably won't have most of it either. There's a reason that Nintendo is the first out of the gate for the next round of consoles, and it's because the Wii was such a steaming pile that they could no longer make a profit on it and developers didn't want to develop for it. I used to love Nintendo, but their business model is shit. They just aren't getting it.

And the WiiU is going to be at least $300, maybe more.

I feel like Nintendo has carved out their niche. I don't think they'll ever be able to compete again with XBox and Sony when it comes to technology. Instead they can compete as the family console that is 1) cheap and 2) easy to pickup.

  • This system is for children, why is anyone getting worked up about it.

  • Nintendo is dumb for not releasing a second Mario Kart for the Wii. I'd bet that at least 25% of the hours played on the Wii in 2011-2012, nationwide, were spent on Mario Kart. They absolutely could have sold a ton of copies of a new game. Maybe they thought that releasing the game would impact U sales. I've never been a Nintendo guy(NES is all I've owned), and this system is clearly not changing that. With Move and Kinect, if Sony/Microsoft make a real move on Nintendo's niche in the next generation, this could be the end for them. I would love to see Sony buy Nintendo and give some real hardware to power a badass Mario game.

too bad sony's gaming division is sort of hemorrhaging money as well.
