what is the condition of the car other than that? Has it had any of the big fixes that usually take place after 100k miles (timing chain/belt, water pump, etc)? If your goal is to ride the piss out of the car until it dies then I would definitely put the money into it. You should be able to get another 100k miles out of it, I would think.

My disclaimer is that I don't know a ton about Jettas so they might have famous issues (like head gaskets that religiously go bad at 150,000 miles, timing belt/chains that let lose and send a valve through a piston, etc).

No, actually the car is just fine otherwise. Some things irk me, but absolutely nothing major has happened. In fact, this is the first major fix in quite a while. I've been real lucky with my Jetta.

I think my desire for a new car, is just that, just something new.

How has the car treated you; has it had a lot of other issues or has it been pretty reliable? If it's had other issues I would definitely punt. A friend had a Jetta and it gave him nothing but problems. So I have a bias against them based on his experience. If it was me, I'd sell it and buy a reliable used car with less than 35K miles.

I think Jetta's have a non-interference engine, meaning, if the timing belt goes there is enough clearance between the pistons and valves to prevent damage. But you still should have had that replaced at 100K miles along with the water pump. If you haven't replaced the timing belt and water pump yet I would definitely punt.

There are lots of different engines that have ended up in the Jetta over the years, if it is the 1.8T that was very common it definitely IS an interference engine. I can't speak for any of the others, although I am fairly certain the 2.0T which followed the 1.8T is too.

VW's definitely require more work here and there along the way, but if you are willing to put up with it they will run forever. Whether you want your car that long, or if it makes sense for you to do so economically is up to you.

      • So we're looking at getting a new car. Currently have a 10 year old Avalon with 115K, but it's reaching the point where I'm just dumping money into the car. So many little things wrong with it, let alone that the timing belt has to get replaced, it's leaking power steering fluid, etc. Anyway, we're probably going to have a kid down the road so we're looking at trading it in and checking out some compact crossovers (plus it makes hauling my grill for tailgating a tad easier). Did some test drives last weekend on the Santa Fe, RDX, and RAV4.

RAV4 wasn't bad, especially with the V6, but the interior is flat-out boring. I was impressed with the Santa Fe but I have no idea how reliable Hyundais are these days. RDX rode really smooth but the fuel economy downright sucks, plus it takes premium gas.

Going to test drive the Forester this weekend and maybe the Rogue as well as the Escape. Considering that my current car has a V6, I can't take a step back to a four cylinder unless it has over 200hp. Looking to buy CPO over new. Anyone else have a compact crossover/SUV they're happy with?

        • My daughter is now 2. Before she was born we bought a 4runner to haul her, her stuff and our 90 lbs. dog around (we go to the beach a lot in the summer). I was looking at the Santa Fe because it was well reviewed. My friend who already had a kid warned me that it would be too small for the dog and all the baby stuff. He had a small SUV (I can't remember what kind) and said he wished he would have gotten something bigger. We ended up buying a CPO 4Runner and even that was a little tight heading to the beach when my daughter was younger (babies take a lot of gear). I had to use the roof rack. Now she has less stuff and everything fits in the SUV. If it wasn't for the dog everything would have fit in the back but it would have been at maximum capacity.

I've had good luck with Toyota's so I tend to buy them. I love my 4Runner but it does drive like a truck, which I like but not everyone does. The Highlander has a smoother rider. Also another friend of mine just bought a new Honda Pilot and I really liked riding in that.

I chose the decked out Santa Fe over the Forester 3 years ago. Like it a lot, and at that time I concluded it gave the best value for the $. Reliability has been just fine but it's probably less peppy/performance-oriented than the Forester with the Turbo.

            • If you're looking at the Santa Fe you should also look at the Toyota Highlander. I see a lot of people driving the Kia Sorento as well.

I probably liked the Highlander a bit more (probably b/c of toyota quality rep), but any configuration I wanted always came in like 6K over the Santa Fe.

                • My wife has a mitsubishi endeavor. kind of looks like a 4Runner but it drives more like a car. surprisingly big on the inside but the overall design and interior is kind of meh. Its a 2006 with 100k miles and no major issues.

                    Hey! JMU!

                  • Funny that this thread was bumped seeing as how a timing belt just snapped on my car. I have no clue where to start.

                    • So my roommate let me know that my license plate light was burnt out. I went and picked up some bulbs but when I went to put them in, after taking off the cover, I found that there was no lens underneath, nor was there a bulb. Just two loose wires wrapped in rubber. I've been searching all day online for sockets to no avail and I'm assuming I'll have to take it to the shop to get it fixed. One of my buddies knows cars really well and said it looked to him like the body shop forgot to replace the light fixtures completely when I got a new rear hatch. This happened in 2009.

One would think that after 3 years, I would have been pulled for it. I was pulled at night a year ago and the cop didn't mention it, maybe he just missed it. Anyways, does anyone have any idea of what this will end up costing me?

                        $12.99 (or less I didn't comparison shop)

Buy a bolt on license plate light like this:

                        http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-LED-BOLT-ON-LICENSE-PLATE-LIGHT-LAMP-XENON-WHITE-RV-TRAILER-CHROME-/190639184734?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item2c62fb1b5e

Then just splice the wires together and bolt it on to the license plate. Get your buddy to help you if you don't feel comfortable doing it. Or don't even replace it.

Yeah, but that would require me to hose-off the dog and the car at random gas stations along the way.

                                • My 05 Explorer is now making a groaning kind of sound when driving forward at all speeds, as well as just sitting idle. It has become progressively worse over the last few days. It almost sounds like a fan maybe? Also last night it took it an extra second or two between key turn and engine startup, I've been told that could be a fuel line issue, just had a new alternator put on in September.

Any ideas? I just want to have some idea of what could be wrong with it when I take it in for service.

                                  • Regarding your last problem, like the OP if the car is turning over but not starting then it will not be an electrical problem. Very simply if the battery is dead or low it will not crank. I have no idea where his guy who "works on Mustangs" came up with that. So this eliminates your alternator concern. Like the OP it sounds like a fuel issue. The quick fix is the fuel filter. A tiny thing that NOBODY thinks to replace until it's too late.

As for the groaning we need a bit more info. Is it coming from the engine? From what appears to be below? My first worry is the trans but that's a total guess.
