Munich - Oktoberfest?

  • Who has been?

What's it like? Worth the trip? How many days would you recommend?

  • I went 2 years ago, picked my car up in Munich for Euro Delivery. It's an incredible experience. I'd recommend being there at least a week to get the full spectrum of everything Bavaria has to offer. If you're a beer aficionado this is one of the best trips you'll ever take.

  • Did you just go from one brau haus to the other? How many were in your group?

I know most germans speak English, but was there any language difficulties?

  • I was in Munich during Fruhlingfest, their Spring version. It is a much smaller event, obviously, but had the same layout. Picture a massive county fair, but instead of the livestock barns, each brewery has their own huge tent with musical acts playing all day. This is in addition to the vomit filled, cold war era carnival rides. There are absolutely no language issues. I knew a little bit of German, but I never had to use it anywhere in the city. Bavaria is definitely worth a trip, Oktoberfest or not. I made the mistake of wearing my Bayern jersey on match day, which led to hundreds of people asking me for the score in German. Munich is probably a top 5 friendliest city in the world.

  • I had a huge post on the old site about my trip.

    A summary:

    1. Yes it is worth going.

    2. I spent 5 days there, which is more than enough. I'd recommend 3 to 4 unless you are a seasoned drinker who can handle stateside microbrews or imports such as Stella.

    3. Too much to say, but hang out in the Hofbrau haus beer tent.

  • I have German heritage and this is a bucket list item for me. I have actually been talking with friends about going in 2012. Please post a follow up after your trip...definitely interested in best dates to go, how $ you spend, best hotel(s), etc.

You spent a lot of money....each beer is about 9 euro, but they are large beers. However, when you buy, you normally end up buying for your whole group so you take turns. So you will probably spend at least 125 euros a day due to the high food cost and the amount of drinks you all will consume.

  • Beer Hall putsches used to be the rage, but I haven't been much since then.

    Ouch...

If I may, I have never been to Europe and will have maybe 6 days. I am thinking one ridiculous day at Oktoberfest would be good enough considering there is so much more I want to do with my limited time there. I can't imagine drinking 5 litres of beer with sausages all day long then waking up and doing the same thing over again.

Since I am not going until 2012, I will definitely be asking suquers for travel tips over the next 6 months.

I was basically drunk 24/7 for 5 days. Like I said, it was amazing. I broke up the beer tent time by going to a soccer match at the Allianz Arena with a bunch of Belgians that we met....hilarious!

  • 6 days with Oktoberfest? US -> Vienna -> Prague -> Munich -> US

Student Agency runs really cheap bus trips to/from Prague. Prague/Munich is a perfect combo.

That's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy too little time in those places for pretty much anyone, much less someone who's never been to Europe and would take a while to figure out what's going on. You could spend 6 days in any one of those places, much less trying to do all 3 with travel and drinking time.

  • I'm going to Vienna on Sept 16, and I'll be there until the 22nd. Spending the 23rd and most of the 24th in munich, then heading back to Vienna to catch a flight home. I'm SO excited about this. I actually just dropped my course with that jackass professor because he scheduled a test on the 24th, and he specifically stated that he would not budge for ANYTHING. Oktoberfest in munich >> operations and supply chain management credits.

  • all...looking like I might have to be there for work after all.

Do you have recommendations for best beer tents to visit/stay? I went to the official site and saw all the different tents and was wondering if you personally had favorites. What beers are must?

Loved anything from Franziskaner and Paulaner, can't go wrong with either.

6 days is too short for any Europe trip. The problem is, first time travelers always try to pack in way too much. How often do you see someone with a week long trip including London, Paris, Rome(or something similar)? I wouldn't want to go all the way over there and only see 1 city. If you were to go to only 1 city, it would definitely be either Munich or Prague. I was in Prague for 4 months and didn't get to see everything. I guess my point was that if he were to try and fit in a bunch of cities, that is the trip. You can get between those cities for less than 40usd, center to center in less than 4 hours. Nothing worse than flying into some of these major cities and taking an hour long cab ride between the airport and the city.

I agree people try to do too much, but I just think he'd have more fun, especially on a first trip to Europe, if he spent (for example) 4 days in Munich and 2 taking day trips into the mountains of Bavaria/Dachau/castles/etc. This would be especially true if those 6 days include any of the travel time to/from the US.

  • So the time has come for me to plan out my next trip across the pond. My GF is a first year med student, so this is the only chance we will get for the next 7-10 years. If it were up to me, I would book two plane tickets from 2 cities and figure out the middle while I'm there. However, my GF wants nothing to do with that. She has never been to Europe and she isn't exactly the most risk friendly traveler. She wants to book one of those cookie cutter, road trips. I need to get a package together to make her not want to do that. Spain or Croatia is where we are leaning, but would be open to other suggestions. What are some good places to start putting something together? I've always just booked the travel. Never had to put together a multi-city hotel/travel plan. The current trip on the table is 10days/9nights, Madrid/Bilbao/Barcelona for 2500 each. That includes airfare/hotels/breakfast/3 dinners/2 day trips/travel between cities. I know there has to be a way to knock that down a ton. I don't want to get on a plane, so nothing like Paris/London/Dublin.

Wherever you go - get there early and park yourself at a table for the day. You wont get served if you're not at a table, and its difficult at best to get a seat from late afternoon on.

Early the week it will be easier to visit multiple tents on the same day.

Hofbrau is fun, but mostly tourists (not that its necessarily a bad thing)

Oh man, sucks to be you.

Is the beach a key component of this trip? That's important to know.

    vadimivich

  • Obviously if we are in Croatia, there will be some amount of beach time. But I'm not flying 1/4 way around the world and paying a ton of money to go to a beach when I can stay in the Caribbean with nicer beaches ffor 1/3 the price. I doubt we would spend a minute at a beach in Spain.

As for the cookie cutter aspect. I'm fine with "be here Friday at 8 for your bus to Madrid." I'm not okay with "be here at 4 for your trip to la sagrada familia." I wont do the latter, and I'm pretty sure the current option isn't that. More of just arranged group travel/hotel rates.
