Movies that you recently watched not in the movie theatre

  • watched parts of Old School over the weekend....the scene where Will Ferrel shoots himself with the horse tranquilizer had me in tears...one of the top comedy movie scenes of all time

I've never read the books so I have no particular interest in the franchise, but I've tried to watch the first Harry Potter film 3 different times (mostly because the films are a "thing" in pop culture) and just can't get through it. It stinks.

I totally get that. I read the first book before I allowed my youngest two kids (now 21 and 23) to read them, and the books sucked me in. Without being captured by the greater depth of the books, I can see why you or any other full grown adult might find the movies lacking as I did having read the books. They just can't capture the depth of the world that J.K. Rowling created nearly as well as she did.

  • Don't know if anyone here was a Derrick Comedy fan back in the day but I watched their movie Mystery Team (streaming on Netflix FYI).

It's a solid movie with some really really funny moments but their is not enough material to fill the entire movie. Some parts fall flat.

Yea, Mystery Team was surprisingly really funny. Donald Glover is awesome.

It's chic to say that Old School wasn't that funny, but that's total bullshit. Epic comedy film at that time.

Frank the Tank, man. Brilliant cameos. Piven.

  • Dunno if you guys have ever caught this on the movie channels, but War Games had a straight to DVD sequel called The Dead Code. I think it's safe to say that it's up there amongst the most ill-conceived sequels ever.

JDawg just articulated how I felt about the Social Network. I've been trying to think of a way to put that for like seven months.

Yeah I mean of course everyone had facebook and its blown up to epic proportions. I entered college in its blowing up process while you still needed a .edu address and basically the first thing you did with that address was create a facebook account. But it wasn't about facebook itself, it was more about relationships, Harvard attitudes, and business dealings that screwed people over. Facebook was just the medium that was used that young people could relate to. I could basically make the exact same movie but set it in the 1850s and make it about gold digging or something.

Now if it was about facebook stalking...

  • Really what Social Network was about, IMO, was a character study of this particular guy, the fictionalized version of Zuckerberg as written by Sorkin and portrayed by Eisenberg. It wasn't "about" facebook, that's just how it was marketed and sold. It was more socially relevant being about facebook than, say, There Will Be Blood, which was (IMO) basically a character study of a guy that happened to be an oil baron.

  • Anyone see The Wonderful Whites of West Virginia? Good documentary IMO.

Exactly. And I was going to make that EXACT comparison but audibled to gold for some reason.

    Damnit bk....

To clarify to others, I'm not crapping on the movie, just on the marketing and the critics. I haven't seen many of the big 2010 movies but so far it was the best that I've seen (Inception, Toy Story 3) I think.

  • I still have a couple more to see (127 Hours should be coming up this week off netflix), but I definitely felt like The Social Network was the most interesting film I saw from last year's viewings.

TSN was pretty flawless in terms of filmmaking, but I didn't love it.

Blue Valentine was pretty easily my favorite of 2010.

    Overlord NJT

  • Haven't seen that one yet either.

All depends on what you mean by "loved" it. TSN's downfall when it came to awards season was that it's a film mostly filled with reprehensible people or at least a film whose "hero" is a gigantic douche and completely unlikeable. Which makes it hard to "love" the film. However, King's Speech won everything because it's uplifting and makes you happy. So people vote for the happy movie.

That's why I said "most interesting" because to me right now TSN was the best written, best made, and best acted film from last year. But it's not my favorite and certainly not one I'm going to rewatch with great personal interest.

"Monsters" is streaming on Netflix right now. Its a low budget movie about a NASA probe that breaks up over Mexico/Central America, causing alien lifeforms to basically take that part of N. America over. Pretty good movie, I watched it on a whim, and I was happy. But the ending ate bhole, IMO

Holy crap. Because of your mention, I 'acquired' this and just watched it. What an astoundingly GREAT movie - low budget it's not. Visually original, intimate yet large scale, with elements of Cloverfield and Skyline, even Battle:Los Angeles, but MUCH better done on its scale. I am really impressed, and have no clue how this thing got put out there with zero publicity. And yeah, the ending was lame, but doesn't take away from the quality of the production. Obviously, the protagonists do a pretty good job of involving the viewer. Four thumbs up for 'Monsters'!

And I KNEW the evacuation zone was filmed in Galveston post hurricane, kind of cinema verite there, huh?

  • Watching Apollo 13 right now. One of my all-time favorite movies, and not just because I'm an aero guy.

    PredaTerp

  • Watched Millers Crossing...don't understand all the hype around it.

    StewieTerp

  • Watched a movie called Last Night about some canadians at the end of the world. It was a rather interesting and crazy movie. MUCH better than Miracle Mile, if you are into the whole impending apocalypse type movie.

    LeafeeWolf

  • Watched Skyline-had potential but not much of a story. Trying to get out of the building is not a story. Watched Funny People again last night, it's an underrated movie imo-little long towards the end but a good story with solid comedy throughout. Watched part of Surveillance with Bill Pullman-didn't get to finish it but thought it was a weird but interesting movie to that point.

    TerpPride

  • Another +1 for Monsters on Netflix, pretty good flick on their Instant Stream.

    RUbaseball

  • Just watched Jackboots on Whitehall. It's an alternate history movie depicting the Nazis taking over England. I don't want to give away too much, but the climactic battle scene at Hadrian's Wall is the most horrendous butchery I have ever seen depicted on film.

And Daisy, the protagonist's girlfriend, is heavenly.

  • Watched 127 Hours this weekend. Pretty good, wouldn't say it was great. It was well-done by Franco and Boyle; I think they did the absolute best they could have with the subject matter without too schlocky. The arm cutting-off part was pretty damn hard to watch.

    aschaefe

  • I watched My Blue Heaven. Talk about funny. I think it is a Steve Martin classic.

    EliTerp

  • I got around to An Education last night...I usually enjoy those types of movies more than the typical low/mid-20s guy but I think that since this was 60's England, there was a bit of a cultural gap so some may have been lost on me. I still enjoyed it but I guess Mad Men didn't prepare me a proper background. It probably could have been 5 minutes longer to add a bit more character depth to the supporting cast.

  • Please tell me I'm not the only one who's seen the classic independent film "The Room." In terms of cinematic excellence, it's the worst movie I've ever seen. In terms of sheer hilarity, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen, if that makes sense. I saw it a few days ago and I'm obsessed with it. Here's the trailer, I think they played in on Cartoon Network on April Fools Day as well.
