Middle Names

  • What's up with middle names? I was just looking at my full name written down and realized that I have no attachment at all to my middle name. It could be literally any other male saint name and I would feel literally no different about it.

What's the point? Is it like a backup name? You know, in case your parents decide later that your first name sucks and want to call you something else? Or maybe if you're going through a midlife crisis and want to reinvent yourself you can starting being called by your middle name?

It helps distinguish between you and a serial killer who may have the same first and last name as you.

In general it's a good way to tie in some family history while giving your kid a name that you like.

  • You obviously aren't a very rich white guy, otherwise your middle name WOULD be your main name. I'm 99% sure that people who go by "First Initial. Full Middle Name Last Name" are like twice as rich as the average American.

  • Middle names are normally chosen by parents at the same time as the first name. Names that are popular as first names are also popular as middle names. The given name of a relative is often used because of tradition or to show esteem. A middle name may be chosen which might have been a social burden to the child as a first name, perhaps because it is unusual or indicates a particular cultural background. Surnames are also sometimes used as middle names, usually to honor a relative. It is quite popular to use the mother's maiden name as the middle name, especially in South America[citation needed]. A child is sometimes given a middle name that is the first or middle name of one of his or her parents. In the United States, it is also common for a baby boy to be given the same given name as his father, in which case the middle name may be used as if a first name so as to distinguish him from his father.

I'm on board with this. With my first son, I will guarantee this treatment by merely giving him a consonant for his first name and a full middle name. "S James Bittenbinder".

Im ready for aa 5th of vodica to end my feels.

That's awesome. It reminds me of a kid in my elementary school class whose middle name was the letter D.

My dad goes by his middle name or first initial/middle name, but that's because his father had the same first name, and he was an asshole.

I never really liked having a Jr/Sr, so my son has his own first name, but my first name as his middle name.

  • My middle name is awful. AWFUL. Legendarily bad. I would completely change it, but it's a family name and I would alienate most of my relatives. So I just don't tell anyone what it is.

  • I have two. First is a regular one. Second is my families historical name that my grandfather changed to my current last name

  • So does anybody want to name my daughter too? She's due in 3 weeks and we don't have a name yet. The criteria is:

    - Kind of cool
    - Not too weird
    - Not too "urban"
    - Not white trash/stripper

You pretty much have to tell us what it is now.

Then surely you could tell some strangers on a message board. Unless its something like "handjob" it can't be that bad.

  • My middle name is Vincent. After van Gogh. But I like to tell people it's after Vincent Vega of Pulp Fiction.

Add a number to his name. That also dramatically increases your likelihood of being rich.

In a poll of "who is more successful," S. James Bittenbinder IV would dominate S. James Bittenbinder.
