Md. Dist. 1 Cong. Race

  • all i ever hear is how people want an "independant voice" as their representative. FRANK KRATOVIL has proven to be just that. He has put his district ahead of everything else. he doesn't blindly follow anyone. he has accomplished more in 2 years than any freshman congressman in my memory.

i know frank well. frank was in my wedding. i am the godfather on one of his boys. we attended 11 consecutive acc tournaments together. frank is one of the very few things in the political arena that TAG, poohterp and i all agree on. he's is a long-time, die hard terp fan. he played hoops and was very friendly with steve hood (for those of you that remember steve). frank is intelligent and hard-working.

despite doing a great job, frank is in serious danger of losing because of the "vote out every incumbent" mindset. i beg every voter in this district to research the candidates thoroughly. andy harris, in my opinion, is every bit as radical and as crazy as a certain senatorial candidate from delaware that we all know and love. his campaign strategy is to stay quiet and not express his views. why? because when he opened his mouth 2 years ago, he wound up blowing a 16 pt. lead. he act like he is running against nancy pelosi. why? because he know frank has done a good job and he hasn't given harris a lot of ammo to use.

i can't tell you how important every vote is in this race. i live in district 1. i want a congressman that will actually try to accomplish things for my district. i beg all of you to consider voting for FRANK KRATOVIL.

    thanks.

  • I've been banging this drum for weeks, but I can't imagine any rational, sane person voting for Andy Harris.

And like I said in parlay's other thread, I've never met Frank Kratovil, I don't know him, but I know a bunch of people that worked with him while he was in Queen Anne County. They all swear by him and say he's a stand up guy. People on both sides of the fence. Frank Kratovil definitely deserves your vote.

I've read where you've said this in several threads, but to my knowledge you've never explained why you feel this way. FTR, I know nothing about him so I'm just curious.

  • First of all Harris is a wingnut.

Also, in the last campaign Harris made accussations against Kratovil that were patently false regarding a case in which a guy accused of a child sexual assault was released on bail. He basically flat out stated that Kratovil supported the release of child predators, which made him weak on crime, which is preposterous. I received mailers and flyers at my house making those types of claims that included the mugshot of the guy in the case in question (where the facts were that the guy was released pending trial, because that's how "the law" works). It was a total scumbag move and it pissed off pretty much everyone I know that lives on the Shore and works in law enforcement. Because of that type of action, I consider Harris a person of low character.

    Plus, Harris is a nutbag.

    bkmalik

  • OK thanks...and by nutbag, what do you mean?

I have to admit, I haven't done my homework on the local candidates at all. They're always low on my radar, for some reason.

Don't mean to grill you on this, but I have to say it looks like Harris is going to win, so would this be just a general anti-incumbent thing and not just an anti-Kratovil thing?

I have to admit, I haven't done my homework on the local candidates at all. They're always low on my radar, for some reason.

2 examples of Harris and why they are keeping him locked in the closet:

at a debate 2 years ago, Harris got pegged on the very issue that BK just brought up. After a red-faced answer, follow up question was asked. Harris stood up, temper flaring, and said something to the effect of, "that's it, I'm done. this isn't a debate, it's an inquistion (not his word - i should have written it down) and refused to take any more questions. his only other words were a prepared speech. he was so red-assed, his head almost exploded. if something that small sets him off......

so, exactly 2 years ago, both candidates have their election night party withing a 1/4 mile. frank shows up at his and is with all the folks the entire time. he's there from 9pm until almost 2 am and waited until virtually everyone left. around 1 am, he gave a speech thanking everyone for coming but announcing that no decision was likely to come that night.

down the road, harris's supporters were gathered while harris hid upstairs in a private room waiting for the results. around midnight, harris snuck down the back stairs and out the door to a waiting car and left without saying a word to anyone. a staffer announced that the party was ending. i know several folks that were outraged by that behavior and swore they would never support the man in anything he did ever again (they are die-hard pubs).

  • Kratovil got caught under the tsunami of anti-democratic flavor. It's all on the White House. It's unfortunate because i heard he is a good congressmen.

Also heard the DNC pulled resources and support from his campaign awhile back as they wrote him off.

    goterpss

  • Harris is an idiot but a vote for Kratovil is a vote for a democratic speaker and dem led committees. Right or wrong, that is what it comes down to. If he was a repub he would pull 65%

    StewieTerp

  • I'm pretty much center-right on most issues, but I can't see how for the life of me anyone can vote for that nutjob Andy Harris. And shame on the Maryland Republican Party for not distancing itself from this lunatic.

I'm not too crazy about Kratovil either, because he's one of those guys who wants to be all things to all people. Make up your mind -- you are either independent or you support the Congressional leadership; being both is a tough sell.

i'll take that back. at the last second the DNC came up with some money. The NY Times had been tracking all the races one by one and had been reporting the lack of support from the DNC.

That line of reasoning is dumb, you should vote for the right guy to represent YOU.

Kratovil actually voted against the Obama Healthcare bill.

  • you're both correct. If a congressman is going to caucus with one party that does impact majorities and committee leaderships. But I do agree a good representative represents their district first and foremost and that should trump where they'll caucus.

The DNC has been running anti-Harris ads pretty strongly. I've noticed that all the anti-Harris ads have been funded by the Democratic Congressional Committee. They were still airing over this past weekend.

But the DNC is probably right in considering it likely a lost seat. Like you said, it's a shame because he's actually the right guy for the job.

Also, the Pubs are going to win a majority in the house regardless of this race. So that's why I characterize that line of reasoning as dumb.

I also remember 2 years ago that a few people around here were voting for Harris because Obama was going to win, and that kind of thinking just bothers me when it comes to Congressional races.

    bkmalik

  • I've seen all the ads, and it's obvious both candidates drown puppies, torture kittens and push people in wheelchairs down hills.

They both really made themselves look like idiots. None of the above, please.

    Allenbaba

  • Why does everyone think Harris is going to take this seat? What is the latest polling? The last I heard this was a very close race.

    fletchterpz

  • I think it comes down to the general assumption that most close races are going to break the Pubs way, and that Harris has generally been ahead in polling even if it's been close.

it is very close. but an incumbent polling in the low 40's usually doesn't end well.

and that's where Kratovil is, and has been. it's pretty much a coin toss.

    terp11

  • a democrat incumbent polling at even this year is not looking good.

I wonder what kind of coattails there will be between Ehrlich and Harris, and vice versa?

I don't live in the district, but if I did I would be one of those odd birds who voted for Kratovil and Ehrlich.

    fletchterpz

  • My wife saw him at our polling spot this morning.

He's a good dude by all accounts and I don't think he's a particularly good Democrat but he seems to do things based on sincerity as opposed to political expediency. And living in a moderate district that's all I can expect from a Congressman. Hope he wins, not expecting it to happen.

    PaulUMD

  • Kratovil runs that incredibly misleading ad about Harris wanting to raise the sales tax to 23%. Other than that, I think he's a decent Congressman.

Andy Harris is a total lunatic. He's a crusading social conservative. He loves the important issues of our time like teh gheys and porn at College Park. My wife watches every minute of the General Assembly that's shown on PBS (for work, she swears) and I always get excited when Harris takes the mic because he'll usually say something crazy. Kind of the way I get excited for a fred44terp posting.

    mattw75

  • I'd vote for Kratovil if I lived in his district, but I'd be stunned if he won. I've yet to see a poll put him over 43%. That's dreadful for an incumbent.

    terps687

  • So glad my former district has turned into a classic turd sandwich vs giant douche race. Yay party politics!

    Flops

  • If Harris wins, he will no doubt be a one-and-done termer. Once he starts giving nightly special orders speeches on CSPAN, his constituents will see what a nutjob he is.
