I think instead of focusing on the "exodus," they should look at people who might have moved to Maryland that choose not to because of the taxes. There has to be a pretty good number of wealthy people that move to the DC area every year, is there any data on whether they are now picking Virginia in greater numbers than they had been?

Which could apply to all the businesses also who won't come to Maryland or leave Maryland. O'Malley has screwed the state for a long long time. So much is unfunded and manipulated....we're lucky the Feds just threw a ton of $$$ at us recently
The oped might as well have spent a few paragraphs going through all of O'Malleys taxes and hidden ones (toll increases, speed cameras, car fees, and whatever else was left from the largest tax hikes in Maryland history)

Just discovered that 2 more of my clients will be filling as FL residents for the 1st time w/ their 2011 return, making the total # of people I know who have fled O'Malley's Taxland in the last 2 years about 6. In fact one of those 2 will likely move his business from Baltimore to Delaware in the next couple of years.

First off, the lower state tax. I immediately saw an extra 250 bucks in my paycheck every month, and that's not peanuts. The sales tax on a new car is 2.5%, as opposed to the insane 6 or soon to be 7% in MD. Sure we have the personal property tax "car tax" here, but that's peanuts compared to the savings I get every month from the lower state taxes. Throw in other things like the lack of speed cameras in VA, lower insurance premiums...I'm quite happy with my move.

Maryland may not be NYC, but I would think people moving to Virginia are moving further away from their jobs, friends, family, access to entertainment, etc. Also sending your kids to UMD at in-state rates is huge.
I understand 3K/year may not be peanuts to some ppl, but if these anecdotes of folks moving to save $250/month in income taxes are offset by longer commutes and further distances from friends and the Univ of Maryland I can't imagine it's really paying off.

This is actually one of the only things I agree with MOM on. Since counties set the compensation and pension, it seems only fair that they should have to foot some of the bill. Otherwise what is stopping local governments from always giving teachers raises and benefits increases? "After all- it is the state's responsibility! And I just got the teachers' union support." Oversimplification, but not by much.
Also- if it "forces more taxes on the local level" that would also bring the issue closer to home for many people, and we could then have an honest discussion about the compensation levels. Plus- isnt it more fair for me in Mont Co to pay the pensions/benefits than someone out in the sticks, whose teachers might make 1/2 as much?
As I said- about the only thing I've ever agreed with that POS O'malley on.

I've been a resident of Maryland, Virginia and New York city in my time. I thought Maryland was by far a better place to live than VA (tax consequences associated aside).

My post was based on NYC....
I will take VA state schools over MD's any day of the week....no one says you stay in the same job(although because of gridlock I actually commute the same amount of time despite an increase of 15 miles one way...friends are a good point but once you are married with kids it is completely different than hanging with your college buddies or a good wing man.
I save about 3K a year in taxes and got a house for 1/3 less than what i would have paid in MD. With increasing commuting cost I still come ahead about 7K a year.
Being just far enough from UMD to make it a pain to drive there is the worst part ( wouldn't that bad be if I didn't have to deal with the traffic to get their though)...other than that I am never moving back.
