Martin O'Malley: America's Worst Governor?

  • neal990 said...

I think instead of focusing on the "exodus," they should look at people who might have moved to Maryland that choose not to because of the taxes. There has to be a pretty good number of wealthy people that move to the DC area every year, is there any data on whether they are now picking Virginia in greater numbers than they had been?

Which could apply to all the businesses also who won't come to Maryland or leave Maryland. O'Malley has screwed the state for a long long time. So much is unfunded and manipulated....we're lucky the Feds just threw a ton of $$$ at us recently

The oped might as well have spent a few paragraphs going through all of O'Malleys taxes and hidden ones (toll increases, speed cameras, car fees, and whatever else was left from the largest tax hikes in Maryland history)

"Just days after Virginia governor Bob McDonnell announced a $544 million surplus, Maryland governor Martin O’Malley told county leaders Saturday that Maryland may need to increase taxes to solve a $1 billion budget gap next year.

What makes the contrast even more striking is the fact that McDonnell previously balanced an inherited $4.2 billion budget deficit that Gov. Tim Kaine had said could only be closed with a $2 billion tax increase, while O’Malley has already signed the largest tax increase in Maryland history during his first term."

Curious - what are the tangible differences you see?

First off, the lower state tax. I immediately saw an extra 250 bucks in my paycheck every month, and that's not peanuts. The sales tax on a new car is 2.5%, as opposed to the insane 6 or soon to be 7% in MD. Sure we have the personal property tax "car tax" here, but that's peanuts compared to the savings I get every month from the lower state taxes. Throw in other things like the lack of speed cameras in VA, lower insurance premiums...I'm quite happy with my move.

  • My mom is one of those folks considering leaving Maryland and establishing a permanent residence in a lower tax state.

People are willing to deal with crappy tax situations in places like NYC and various parts of California simply because they like what that area has to offer. I guess the same could be said for those folks living it up in Southern Maryland. I mean, why would you want to leave when you just got an Olive Garden not too long ago?

Also don't forget he wants to send teacher pensions back to the counties which, tho may be a good idea in the scheme of things, will predictably force more tax increases at that level too.

This is actually one of the only things I agree with MOM on. Since counties set the compensation and pension, it seems only fair that they should have to foot some of the bill. Otherwise what is stopping local governments from always giving teachers raises and benefits increases? "After all- it is the state's responsibility! And I just got the teachers' union support." Oversimplification, but not by much.

Also- if it "forces more taxes on the local level" that would also bring the issue closer to home for many people, and we could then have an honest discussion about the compensation levels. Plus- isnt it more fair for me in Mont Co to pay the pensions/benefits than someone out in the sticks, whose teachers might make 1/2 as much?

As I said- about the only thing I've ever agreed with that POS O'malley on.

Just discovered that 2 more of my clients will be filling as FL residents for the 1st time w/ their 2011 return, making the total # of people I know who have fled O'Malley's Taxland in the last 2 years about 6. In fact one of those 2 will likely move his business from Baltimore to Delaware in the next couple of years.

My brother moved to VA recently and loves it over Maryland. Said he saves around 250 a month also in taxes plus his girlfriend saves around that also and that adds up quick

You get NYC for your money so I can see people staying in the end(cost/benefit). What does MD have to offer anyone?

  • Maryland may not be NYC, but I would think people moving to Virginia are moving further away from their jobs, friends, family, access to entertainment, etc. Also sending your kids to UMD at in-state rates is huge.

I understand 3K/year may not be peanuts to some ppl, but if these anecdotes of folks moving to save $250/month in income taxes are offset by longer commutes and further distances from friends and the Univ of Maryland I can't imagine it's really paying off.

I can't tell if this is a joke but it sure seems like it. There are far more jobs in the northern VA area and as much as I love my alma mater, far more quality in state schools.

For me, it shortened my commute from 16 miles to 3. I can get to CP from Arlington in about the same amount of time as I could from Potomac by using 395/BW Parkway. I understand people's situations differ, but it was nothing but positive in my case.

You are spot on in theory. I'm just suggesting that with the easily anticipated local taxes rising from teacher pensions, state taxes rising huge from the Guv, and the expiration of payroll tax cuts and "Bush" tax cuts when Obama wins, we (us?) Marylanders with jobs will be astonished by what happens to our after tax income. Somebody ought to make a web calculator!

Yes, absolutely. That's where he fails. But I get reflexive and have to defend him for raising taxes as part of the solution.

I've been a resident of Maryland, Virginia and New York city in my time. I thought Maryland was by far a better place to live than VA (tax consequences associated aside).

My post was based on NYC....

I will take VA state schools over MD's any day of the week....no one says you stay in the same job(although because of gridlock I actually commute the same amount of time despite an increase of 15 miles one way...friends are a good point but once you are married with kids it is completely different than hanging with your college buddies or a good wing man.

I save about 3K a year in taxes and got a house for 1/3 less than what i would have paid in MD. With increasing commuting cost I still come ahead about 7K a year.

Being just far enough from UMD to make it a pain to drive there is the worst part ( wouldn't that bad be if I didn't have to deal with the traffic to get their though)...other than that I am never moving back.
