Mad Men Season 5 Thread

  • Wait, I know the poem, I guess I didn't follow what line was said on the show.

  • when Ginsberg was bragging to Peggy and Rizzo (when they were drinking beers), he puffed up his chest and said the inscription of the now-decayed statue: "Look upon my works, ye mighty and despair!" and then Rizzo said "you should really read the rest of that poem, you boob"

    Ahh, gotcha. Thanks.

  • I was hesitant on the Ginsberg introduction at first, but it's turned out very interesting. One of the reviews I read basically positioned him as the "villain" of the season because he's the one that represents out how old and complacent Don is, how old-fashioned Peggy is, and in general how out of touch SCDP is in danger of being. Not sure I necessarily agree with that notion, but it was an interesting food for thought.

None of that is necessarily wrong but I think the real strength of Ginsberg, as mentioned above, is his total lack of a filter when dealing with superiors. He has no qualms about calling out those above him, which will make for some great confrontations, not to mention hilarious Don and/or Roger smackdowns.

The Ginsberg thing with Don just leaving his idea in the cab seemed weird. In the past, he's always taken Peggy's ideas and made just enough minor adjustments to it that he could call it his own. No sure why he got so offended/ competitive with Snoball...

Has Don really done any creative lately? I feel that he stumbled on Ginsbergs folder, wanted to see what he had left in the tank and worked on it all night only to come up with something that wasn't as good as the new guys. Then in an effort to save his ego, he ditches Ginsbergs stuff to prove that his work is still viable.

He might even see what is going on with Peter and Roger and knows he's headed down the same path.

He seems more a foil than a villain.

If this were early Season 1, the phrase "Betty chugs whip cream" probably would have elicited a much different and more bonerific response from me.

  • Is there any place I can watch the last episode for free? Totally missed it.

"The drummer for Maryland's pep band just freaked out: 'They're trying to slow the game down,' he screamed. 'Get up on them, get up on them.

Agreed - it def came off that way by Don's speech to him in the elevator, but I don't understand why. I mean, Peggy's done good stuff before? Why did he never feel threatened from her in the same way - is it because she only ended up in that role because of him?

Because Peggy doesnt represent what Ginsberg represents. Its not like women were taking over the field and pushing men out. But pure young talent, the kind that Ginsberg has, represents a threat (not so much an actual one, but more an existential one) to an aging man preoccupied with a new young wife, fallout from a divorce and three children. Don used to be the deeply insightful and completely dialed in to what is going on in the world around him guy and now he sees someone else filling that role and it makes him feel.....old and out of touch.

  • Yeah, he used to hang out in bars and read the books that he saw the hip-cats reading. Now he can't make it through a Beatles song.

    ....old and out of touch.

That's exactly the way I would characterize anyone who could be listening to Revolver in 1966 and just turn it off.

This whole season seems to be about Don's transition from someone who has his finger on the cultural pulse of the times to someone who is just watching from the shore as the river rolls on by. Which happens to everyone, of course, it's called getting old.

  • Jon Hamm is about the same age as Don, but the character comes off as much older than 40, especially when you think about all he has been through in the past two decades -- Army, fur shop, getting a job at SC, moving up the SC ladder, meeting and marrying Bettty, having three kids, changing firms, divorce, remarrying, etc.

    fletchterpz

  • He celebrated his fourtieth birthday, but later in the episode (earlier?) he said that he really had his 40th a couple years prior due to the whole changing identities thing

  • For what it's worth, Ginsberg's idea of making the bus side look like the passengers all have wine under their seat was WAY ahead of its time. Decades. We really didn't see a huge trend in that kind of thinking until the mid-90s (using medium as part of the message). I'm trying to figure out if Ginsberg is supposed to represent some real life advertising genius who becomes famous later on - Cliff Freeman is the only one who comes to mind who might fit the criteria. Cliff absolutely owned the 80s and 90s. "Where's the beef?"

The thing I just can't get past is why Roger and Don feel so threatened by Pete and Ginsberg. They're GREAT for business, and offer no threat whatsoever because Roger and Don own the business. It actually pisses me off. Maybe I'm having a hard time suspending disbelief because I've been looking for a "Ginsberg" for years. I dunno. I guess ego is part of their character flaws or something.

  • Him saying "I don't think about you at all" to Ginsberg was probably a pretty devastating remark to Michael, but what's funny about it is that it wasn't true. Don stayed in the office late at night, trying to come up with something that could beat him.

Reviews I've read have been torn on this- did the people at SCDP actually like Don's "devil" pitch, or were they sucking up/being yes men? It seemed like Ginsberg's was obviously better. But it also seemed like they genuinely thought Don's was about even with it.

Ohhhhhhhh, I missed that. So the real Don Draper, the platoon commander, was younger the grunt soldier he was leading?
