Local Morning News Meat/Gossip

  • My wife and I watch ABC 7 Morning news in the morning. The entertainment is great for two reasons (used to be three, RIP Doug McKelway) (1) the meat, and (2) the Lisa Baden alcoholics faction.

    First, ABC does an outstanding job of hiring 26 year old hotties. No one exemplifies this better than Pamela Brown. I want to bang her more than just about any other woman right now. Britt McHenry is another example. Alison Starling used to be cute but I can't tell if she's looking worse or these younger hotter anchors are making her look bad by comparison.

    Second, Lisa Baden is a raging alcoholic. She sips vodka from her 22 oz coffee mug and for the most part keeps it in check. Sure she starts singing for no reason, has permanent bedhead, and probably wets herself every now and again, but she's functional; reads a mean traffic report and generally has a sunny disposition.

    Unfortunately, Brian van de Graaff couldn't pull off the same. He tried to keep up with Lisa after hours, drinking once their 5-9AM shift ended. But Lisa is an old pro. She'd throw on some sunglasses, swallow the mouthwash, and show up comatose. Brian showed up late, got fat, forgot his lines, read the weather wrong, cussed at his boss, and soiled himself on TV. Most in the station knows not to try to keep up with Lisa because you can't win. Brian proves this as he went from promising young weatherman to rehab patient and now reads the Channel 8 weather in a Christmas sweater with the expressions of a man with a lobotomy.

    Several others have occasionally dabbled. I'm convinced Doug McKelway slept with Lisa after a serious bender and fought his boss the next morning while trying to work out his emotional issues. But he's in exile now so we'll never know. For my money, Adam Caskey is next. He's a young and impressionable weatherman. He sees Lisa's raging rock and roll life style and thinks its dangerous but he can survive it. I give him two more years before we find him in gutter.

  • Baltimore's local news crews don't begin to measure up to these highlights-ours are mostly pseudo-perky and therefor annoying.

    I don't really watch morning news. I do like McGinty's mailbag on Ch.9 CBS in the evening slot.

  • I think local newscasters have to be some of the hardest partiers. Every time there is unscripted banter they barely manage to avoid saying something really messed up. It's fun watching depraved people try to have civil, family-friendly conversations before they head off to the Rex Ryan parties.

  • We watch NBC4 and I swear Joe Krebs is hitting on Courtney Reagan every morning when she does the Wall Street live update around 6:50.

    She has a raspy voice that gets the day off to a good start even if the markets are set to open lower..

  • LOL. I definitely need to watch NBC more before he snaps. McGinty is so entertaining though when he responds to the crazies from his mailbag...

    How is Sue Palka still on the air? I thought they usually made glue out of horses by this point.

    Has Topper Shutt aged at all? I swear he hasn't aged. It must be all the fetuses he eats.

  • Slightly off topic and probably deserves it's own thread, but as a blatant Redskins homer who grew up with Sam, Sonny and Frank...it's time for S&S to call it a career. Yes, they are homers, they always have been, but they were always entertaining. Now, it's just sad. Incoherent nonsense. I hate saying it because they are the voices of my youth.

    And people who work in local news are the most angry, depressed raging alcoholics around.

    HOF LIndsay Czarniak has been filling in mornings this week and Joe Krebs has been out of control with the awkward flirting and staring. I'm surprised you haven't seen a boner popping up from behind the newsdesk.

  • Also, last year during the snow Czarniak and Fat Baby Russert were playing "snow football" in the drifts in Dupont. The flirting both ways was very obvious. I think Russert even play tackled her. I was definitely waiting for them to just start making out.

  • I love this thread and over-analyzing innocuous things such as morning television shows.

    We need a similar thread on commercials (for the 85th time), because I have a lot of issues with commercials these days.

    Channel 4 = If the station managers and Garth got their way on everything (Meatloaf recipes FTW)

    Channel 7 = That scene where everyone was hungover but every day of the year

    Channel 9 = Luke Wilson's station

  • There are a lot of Wendy Rieger's in major markets. That's the problem with big city news stations. They are under the false assumption that we want competent journalists. Most small market stations know all we want are hot young reporters with nice cans.
