Second, he reads the description of anything that even remotely sounds more exciting than paint drying. Also, he hates sports so that is out. And the worst part is, no matter what he is looking for or at, the channel always ends up on MSNBC, CSPAN, or PBS.

My old man watches the TV with no sound and closed captioning because "the commercials are just too damn loud." He's 60 years old, not 80.
Imagine trying to watch sports this way with CC taking up the screen and way behind the play. Infuriating.
