Jam Bands

They're definitely an acquired taste, but they have a great sound. Sort of a very full, bluegrass/folk and somewhat haunting sound.

Another band I forgot to mention that I'm really into is Yonder Mountain String Band.

I love Yonder Mountain. The boys used to come to the house whenever they were in town for some jam sessions with my roommate at the time (one the best banjo and harmonica players around). Had some great times drinking beer and chilling out with them.

Count me as a big Yonder fan too, I always try to see them when they're in town. Last saw them at the Fillmore SS and they killed it. I really wish I could go see them at Delfest but I don't think I'll be able to go :(

That is awesome that you got to hang out with them, they seem really friendly/down to earth on stage.

I like Railroad Earth too from what I've heard but haven't listened to a ton of their stuff. I also like what I've heard from Hot Buttered Rum and Punch Bros but that is a bit more newgrass not necessarily jam band

This makes me so jealous- I would have been too young to see Phish before 2004 anyway, but I love going back and listening to mid-90's shows.

That's awesome. Yonder puts on some amazing shows. Their shows at Delfest the past two years have been incredible. They also show a lot of gratitude and appreciation to Del, which is cool to see.

Damn, I had tix to that Yonder Fillmore show, but had to go out of town.

I used to love Railroad Earth, but my appreciation for them has waned a bit over the past few years. Not a huge fan of their live jam style, seems to wander a bit aimlessly sometimes.

Love the Punch Bros, Chris Thile is a mandolin god.

    ROCKS

  • I went through a real brief bluegrass phase. I totally blame drugs for that.

  • So a few weeks ago I had the greatest concert experience of my life at Umphrey's Mcgee. Last summer my dad had a heart attack, quadruple bypass and a stroke, and is still working on his rehab and recovery.
I took him to see UM while I was home on spring break, and apart from them putting on a great show, he absolutely loved it, he was slapping his knee in time with the music and rocking back and forth in his chair all night, and said he would go again when they came back to the area.
It was easily one of the best times he's had in the past year, and even though it wasn't the best show I've ever seen, it's definitely the most important.

  • Jam bands are soooooo awful and pointless.

And MMJ is not a jam band, unless they qualify bc their last two albums are awful and pointless as well.

  • hey guys, here's are a few awesome songs by an awesome band from the last decade (though they're broken up now), so you can see what real (aka good) music sounds like:

if you like it rawking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izccSXNFLc4

if you like it more mellow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e4IYPBlsEs

if you want something in between: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN-3oe99tCU

the usual touch point for them is "a cross between Fugazi and Springsteen"

    you're welcome
