  • Paul would take the most independents/democrats if you believe the polls, but he'd also probably lose the most republicans as well.

It's hard to put the Economist into liberal or conservative categories, at least as those categories are understood in America. They endorsed Obama over McCain and their position on some issues is lock step with the American left. Some of their positions are lock step with the American right. It's really pretty moderate politically, the National Review it is not.

The Econmist is a free-market magazine. What is confusing to many Americans is that The Economist does NOT believe the market is perfectly fine all on its own. In other words, The Economist is sane. In 1992 they endorsed Clinton over GHW Bush, and then in 1996 they endorsed Dole over Clinton. Not great in predictions, (but endorsements are not predictions) but they maintained a sane (not necessarily accurate but sane) position that the two incumbents were not handling the US economy well.

  • A sure sign that Romney might be on his way to a win in Iowa and a blow-out in New Hampshire, I'm seeing conservative pundits on twitter starting to downplay the importance of those two states. Erick Erickson has described Iowa as the "preseason" and keeps pointing out that Iowa and NH are worth 10 delegates while South Carolina and Florida are worth 75.

+small share of dissatisfied liberal voters who hate Obama's moderate presidency.

I think very few people would agree that O's presidency has been moderate. If you had said ineffectual, most would agree, and this is the real reason for liberal discontent.

The bottom line is, the Pubs will settle on someone acceptable to most reasonable people, while the Dems will have a candidate who depends on race baiting, class warfare and outright baldfaced lying far beyond anything suggested by the most extreme Pub hopeful.

    Rick Santorum says hi.

This is what the Pub hopeful who is currently "surging" said to voters in Iowa yesterday: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them other people's money. I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn their money and provide for themselves and their families."

This type of rhetoric is especially noteworthy because approximately 85% of the people on welfare in Iowa are white.

I'm not sure that it's race baiting when you say that you want to help some race other than your own.

Are you flaming or do you honestly not see the race baiting involved with telling an all-white audience that you "don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them other people's money" when the "other people" at issue are white people, even though a person who is on welfare in Iowa is about 8 or 9 times more likely to be white than black?

If he didn't want to race-bait, he could have tried to make his point without invoking black people on welfare, which would have actually been more relevant and intellectually honest since 80-90% of people on welfare in Iowa and 98-99% of his audience was white. But no, he chose to make his point by talking about "black people" getting "other people's money."

You may as well argue that the video was doctored and/or he didn't somehow said what he is being quoted as saying -- that would be a lot more palatable than trying to defend this clown.

Yes, it would have been better not to cite any race at all in his statement, but I'm more inclined to credit him with being clumsy, than with being a race opportunist. When Obama and other Dem pols stop citing race, then I'll expect Pub candidates to do the same.

First time voter and new to participating in our democracy and already jaded by business as usual politics. Sadly I bet this posters will refuse to engage in the system in the future thus being one of many responsible for the failure of government because they are too lazy and uninformed to even care.

actually im probably one of the few people my age who gives enough of a shit to realize your generation is fucking mine over so hard that i oughta get involved now to avoid the blackhole of a political picture my generation is being handed. im not saying the general assumption of young voters not engaging the system is uncommon but im not in that group. im merely saying it is frustrating and unnecessary to have to wade through the huge swamp of bullshit that is the primary and general elections.

edit: sorry this isnt relevant to the discussion. needed to respond to that though

  • Hey, you should feel good. It took me until my 3rd presidential election cycle to realize how completely screwed the whole system was. If you're already disillusioned, you're way ahead of the curve. thumbsup

I still show up and vote on every election day. It's takes 5-10 minutes, maybe 20 if things are really crowded. And if you don't want to show up on polling day getting an absentee ballot is easy as hell. People that don't vote and then whine about it (especially about how hard it is to do/don't have the time) are lazy, worthless shits.

Plus, if you live in a state like Maryland that is essentially pre-determined for a particular party, you can file what is essentially a protest vote for a 3rd party for president.

To liberals, Obama has been moderate on issues like Iraq, Afghanistan, Gay marriage, Drug War, Civil Liberties, etc. It's not about reality, it's about the perception of him not doing what he promised when he promised hope and change (except Healthcare and Stimulus).
